hello, i would like to re-visit my question, if i may. i have a Dreamfall saved game that MaG sent to me and i am having the devil of a time, in terms of loading, getting it into Win7. i understand i should start by doing a search for .sav but that's as far as it goes. could somebody of you staff walk me through please? robert.

Robert, this is probably a silly question but have you looked in the game folder?
There might be a saved game file in there.

If he is using the GOG version I found it buried nine layers deep

C:\ Users\ User Name\ Local Settings\ Virtual Store\ Program Files X86\ Gog.com\ Dreamfall\ Saves

How is that for a treasure hunt?

On my system Win 7 Search won't find it using these terms-- Dreamfall--Saves---Gog,com--- or the file extension .sav It is the first time I've run into that.

Let's hope he is using gog because it's a simple matter of pasting the save into that folder. The gog version recognizes saves from the disc release. I just tested it after installing the gog version to track them down guessing that is the version he is most likely using.

If it is the old disc variety then the saves are likely going to be buried somewhere inside MY Documents or User Name. It could be a search because the possibilities are endless.

What about "hidden folders" think

With Win7 they might need to be revealed.

I checked that Mad. That is not it because it found saves for other stuff. Just not Dreamfall. I think it is just a "microsoft moment"

Isn't there a recent thread here about this same issue? I can't remember if the issue was resolved though.

I located his saves posted above if he is using the Gog version. Otherwise I don't know where they are from dvd or cd versions. Best guess would be users or documents somewhere. They get quite creative with where they place them. I mean this gog version is nine layers deep while the gog version for Broken Sword 5 is in plain sight-- My Documents/Broken Sword 5

I have sometimes found saves in .... My Documents/My Games/Saved Games.
With no mention of anything like game title, developer or publisher to help along the way !!

But I expect your searching, oldmariner, will have already covered that route ?? duh

Yes I did Mad. Like I said I did find it by digging through User folders one at a time. The search feature did not help at all.

If you don't know how to navigate Windows files and folders using Windows Explorer, you'll never be able to find the location of the saved games.

Robert

You never answered my question, what version of Dreamfall are you using?

If it is the GOG release your saves are located here.

C:\ Users\ User Name\ Local Settings\ Virtual Store\ Program Files X86\ Gog.com\ Dreamfall\ Saves

You get there by opening Windows Explorer ----Click Start---All Programs---Accessories----Windows Explorer----

When Explorer opens up Click on Local Disk C--- At the top of your screen click on TOOLS----Click on FOLDER OPTIONS then the VIEW TAB Under Hidden Files and Folders select SHOW HIDDEN FILES FOLDERS AND DRIVE Click APPLY

Once you do that Click on LOCAL DISK C: in the panel left side of main screen. It will reveal a long lists of program files.
Near the bottom of the long list find USERS click on that then follow the path I outlined above

C:\ Users\ User Name\ Local Settings\ Virtual Store\ Program Files X86\ Gog.com\ Dreamfall\ Saves

As you click on each item in the above path the list expands find the next item and click on it eventually you will get to your saves.

As Oldmariner said, the saves could be anywhere.
I don't like the Windows search because it excludes search locations.
Instead I use the Command line with administrative privileges.
Click the Windows icon in the lower left of your screen and type CMD
Right-click on the command line utility it should find and select "Run as Administrator"
("Run As Administrator" should allow it to search your entire hard drive)

At the command line, type

CD \

and the Enter key on your keyboard
gets you to the root folder, from which you can do a complete search

DIR dreamfall_01.sav /S

and the Enter key on your keyboard
should search your hard drive, including subfolders, for a save with the name dreamfall_01.sav

If that doesn't work, you can try running the Process Monitor mentioned on this page in Post #10
