Hello, fellow Boomers,
Does anyone know where the save game folder is located for "The Crystal Key"? I have WIN XP. Thanks in advance.
Sandy

Have you checked the game folder and My Documents?
It may be in a subfolder of a Dreamcatcher folder or "The Adventure Company" folder.
I'm assuming this is the game from 1999

Yes, Jenny. I have checked all those "places", and even tried a "search".
So far, I haven't found where the saves are. Thanks so much for your input. I'll just keep searching.

Have you checked through the subfolders of the Documents and Settings folder?
Mr. Bill says the game has only 10 save slots, so there may be a file that contains all the saves. If you do a search by date, you may have to look for files that changed and not just files that were created.

I've done that also, Jenny but I haven't come up with anything as yet. I'll go through the various D and S folder subfolders again just to make sure. Thanks again for your valued input.

OK, here is your answer. There is a single file that contains the information for all saved games. It is in "The Crystal Key/Content/gmsv.tab" file. Depending on how you installed the game, your top directory may have a different name.
When doing a re-install of the game, the setup program apparently looks for gmsv.tab and will ask if you want it saved or deleted.

This game will play from WinXP but with glitches. The color has trouble staying in 16-bit mode when finishing a movie but will shortly return to 16-bit. Quicktime is used and if you have a newer version than the game uses, you can't use Win98 compatibility mode unless an older version of QT is installed. With QT7, it does not seem to make any difference on my system if video is in GDI only or DirectX mode.

A careful examination of gmsv.tab indicates that it is a text file and it is possible to transfer saved episodes from one computer to another.

The format of the file is an initial list of all game possibilities and then a ten entry section for saved games, ex. 1 (tab) <Empty> (tab) 0 (tab) 0 [etc.] You can add the extension .wri to the file and edit it in Wordpad or a similar text editor. Remove the .wri when finished editing.

That means you could cut and paste a "game save" by line number. Just insert it into your own gmsv.tab at the correct location such that it overwrites your own game line. Correct the line number so the 1-10 sequence is maintained and you are good to go.

Each line in the file uses $09 Tab as entry separators and $0A as the line terminator. Your text editor must maintain this format. If you want to use Wordpad, set it for No Wrap for best display of the file.

Thanks Robert.
It must be a large file if you can't use the .txt extension and edit it in Notepad.

Thank you so much, Robert. BTW, I just finished the game and I had no "glitches" to deal with.

Jenny100,

The file is not that large, about 3.2K, but the lines are very long. Notepad does not display the file very well.
