But you have to get it through Steam.
Backers who do not want any part of Steam have to wait until the full game is released to get it from Humble Bundle.
Thanks so much, Double Fine.

Gil.

This is just a beta release not the final completed game. I got mine earlier today.

Here is a direct quote from Double Fine's email to backers.

"You may recall that at one point Broken Age was planned for release under the Steam Early Access program. This is no longer the case. For various logistical reasons, and because we believe Act 1 is a polished and satisfying piece of content in its own right, Broken Age will be a standard Steam release that includes a “Season Pass” granting access to Act 2 once it is complete. Anyone who has Act 1—either by being a backer, or by buying the game separately—will receive Act 2 as a free update when it’s ready."

That doesn't say beta release to me, Ana.
No, it's not the final complete game.
Double Fine chose to split the game in two.
Now Mr. Schafer has chosen to release Part One early to backers who are willing to sign up with Steam if they don't already use it.
Those of us who wouldn't touch Steam with a bargepole are out of luck as far as Double Fine is concerned.
We can just twiddle our thumbs and wait.

Gil.

My email says:

Quote:
Howdy Backer,

Thanks again for backing Broken Age! You can now access Act 1 on Steam by using the following link:

Your Humble URL: ****************

Please note that the DRM-free builds as well as Act 2 will be made available on your download page upon completion.
Please save this email so you can access Broken Age again whenever you'd like in the future. We will keep your copy online at the above URL for the foreseeable future. In efforts to save bandwidth, we appreciate you making local backups.

If you have any problems, please go to********* and we will get it sorted out ASAP.

When you follow the link it says you have access to the beta on Steam.

I do not have the email you do. duh

That quote was from the Kickstarter Project Update #31 dated yesterday.

I finished it. The game is great so far. thumbsup As a comparison to Tim's previous games, I liked it more than Day of the Tentacle, though not as much as Grim Fandango. The latter is really hard to match/top, though. smile Really looking forward to part 2!

It is a shame the first half is Steam exclusive. I would be quite upset about it if we weren't promised the final DRM free build once the full game is out. That said, I really do think they should offer an alternative to those who would prefer not to use Steam. I certainly would have taken it myself if I'd had the option. duh

It took them something like two years to bring out the first half of the game.
I'd like to know just how long those of us who won't use Steam are going to have to wait for the completed game to be offered to us DRM-free.
Honestly, though, I'm past caring if I ever see it.

Yeah, I know what you mean. They really should have offered a DRM free alternative, even though it is only the first half. duh

I would argue that, Ana. It's semantics. Double Fine is talking as if it's a beta while acting as if it is the finished first part of an episodic game by putting it on Steam, not as an Early Access but as a standard release with a Season Pass attached. They are calling it a beta simply to ward off criticism. Initially, they said the game would be released in a beta version on Steam for backers. Now they're saying the first part of the game is so polished they are releasing it as a standard version. If it's that polished, why can't everyone have it, with Steam or without? They seem to want to have it both ways.

Many see no problem with the Steam release. I suppose they don't mind renting their games. I do. One thing Double Fine has accomplished with this stunt: I will never invest in one of their games sight unseen again and without knowing for dead certain how it will be released.

Gil.

Thanks for all the opinions, conclusions or stating your personal preferences.

Official posted news at GB depend on what the developer/publisher source states.

Happy gaming!

A 'beta' is defined by the developers because only they know what work still needs to be done on it. The argument that it cant be a beta because they they are taking peoples money for it on Steam could also be said for them taking peoples money on Kickstarter (people were paying for it before even a line of code had been written). I would imagine it has been done to raise more money to finish the game. Isnt that the reason for all of these games being split into episodes?

Gil, I am sure you saw the latest email addressing the DRM issue, so since the negative is here, I thought I'd share the positive news:

Quote:
DRM-FREE RELEASE
We always planned for the backer beta to be a Steam-only release, as Steam makes it really easy for us to issue updates and bug fixes that we're confident all players will be able to easily receive—especially when we're managing the game on three platforms simultaneously. We also think Steam provides a great system for seamlessly tying in Act 2 once that's ready to go out.
However, we've also been taking to heart all the feedback from folks who want to download the game in a DRM-free format as soon as possible. So we're getting that prepped! Once we're fully comfortable with the state of the build and have all our ducks in a row, we'll ship that out. We don't have a release date for that just yet, but expect it in the next month or so. Stay tuned!

That's great, thanks Ana. thumbsup I also got that e-mail. Now I just hope those of us who already downloaded the Steam version will also be able to download the DRM free version. lol Of course, I doubt it will be a problem since we're supposed to get a full DRM free version in the end anyway. smile
