or a knock off?

Son and Soot and I both need a new mattresses. We've had water beds for a long time but think it's time to switch them out. I've been thinking about the air types but as always, they are expensive and would like to hear from anyone who has one, or has had one. wave

All I know is I wish I would have chosen one instead of the Simmons Comforpedic. Run from them!

If you do buy one, don't buy it from Sears. We bought a range from them and it had a bunch of mice living in it. Sorry I can't help you out smile

My sister had a sleep number bed. She found it was fun at first being able to adjust everything, but then annoying since she and her hubby were always, 'adjusting' it. She said it became almost a nightly comic routine (sometimes adjusting settings several times a night), and never feeling it was 'just perfect'.

I've never had one, but did the water bed bit, and all the 'top' sellers of Sealy, Simmons, etc. My last bed I sold after only 6 months to a nice couple up the street because it also developed the 'hammock' effect. I found myself having to 'crawl' up to the head during the night and lying in a hollow. Spent mega bucks on the 'top of the line' beds.

So I went to a big store, tried out all the beds (not kidding, drove the salesman nuts) and when I lay down on a Tempur-Pedic,(other memory foam beds are good too) I could feel my body relax immediately and I thought I was in Heaven. Really something new. Some people love them, some hate them, but I've had it for about 5 years now and no sagging, no hammock effect, no crawling out of a hollow, no playing with dials and electricity, and the surface is flat all the time, and no buttons or padding or huge pillow tops, or wire edges to deal with. It's the first bed I could actually lay flat on my back after my back 'injury' without pain.

Before you buy any of them, do a trial run, no shoes, comfy clothes, lay on it for a LONG time in the store till they kick you out. If you have a favorite pillow, take it along. If you fall asleep, that's the bed to buy. Honestly, the salesman had to insist I get up because that Tempur bed felt so good I didn't want to leave.

Good luck!

My comforpedic was a top of the line memory foam bed and ridiculously expensive but it is just a year old and we sink into everynight in an awkward position. Their warranty is a joke and the bed is as bad as the 15 year old one we replaced. sad

I just looked up a survey of 'memory foam' mattresses and found one I have to buy. It's the "Bob-O-Pedic" from Bob's Discount Furniture. rotfl Not kidding. I'm still laughing.

I sleep in one every night and I wouldn't trade it for anything!!! I love it. When my back wants to let me know that I have done too much I kjust pick a high setting and sleep like a baby!! Best investment I ever made.

I had a waveless water bed so all I had to buy was the mattress since I had a very sturdy box springs from that.

Good luck!!

Please buy one! I get a commission. penguin rotfl penguin

Well, I have tried a memory foam topper, about 3 inches thick and I sank right to the mattress below. It was worthless. I bought an expensive latex core mattress about a year ago and have the hammock effect with the added problem that I can't turn it over, it has a definite top and bottom.

I think I will try the tempur-pedic again. I tried one for a short time in a store but probably need to give it more time. I like hearing that it doesn't sag. That same store paired the tempur-pedic mattress with the motorized adjustable bed frame so you could raise your head and knees. The salesperson had bought that bed before joining the company and said it was the best sleep she ever had. I remember it was nice but verrrry expensive.

I don't like shopping for beds (okay, who does) and so it is really hard to get myself to try a lot of them and to remember which I liked better or worse. I guess I will have to have pen and paper handy and make notes.

I happen to be in the market right now as my kitty almost died from eating the heavy-duty thread that was fraying from my old box springs. It wrapped around her tongue and tore up her intestines badly but she is recovering well after surgery. At the moment, I have the mattress directly on the floor. Getting out of bed in the morning comes with instant exercise. smile

Sorta, we're looking at a memory foam because my husband suffers with his back. My question is do you find it hot in summer?

Yo Bob! I will gladly share a commission with you, but I reserve the finder's fee for myself. rotfl Actually The Bob-O-Pedic had a good rating.

And for Bob and Bristol, If you buy a Tempur-Pedic try the different 'hardness'. I got mine in the hardest they make. I wanted no sags. So when you lie on it at first, it's solid as a rock but in a minute, you sorta sink into it, making a little cocoon. Since I sleep alone and au natural, the warmth from my body 98.6 is as hot as it gets and it feels great for me. No need for electric blankie. And if for some reason the summer heat is bad, I just roll over to a cool spot for a few. Love my bed. Can't stay awake for more than 10 minutes and find I'm out before I realize it.

Memory foam isn't for everyone. You either love it or hate it, but buy the best one you can and I'd stick to the 'original' Tempur-Pedic brand. I tried out some of the newcomers, but found they were a lot less supporting. If the foam sinks when you press on it lightly, it's not good. It should feel really stiff and take some effort to put a 'dent' into it. And the memory foam should be at least 4 inches or more. Mine is 6 and it's perfect.

Good luck all and I'm waiting for that finder's fee check!

Thanks guys, interesting to hear everyone's experiences.

Sorta, there is no roll-over-to-a-cool-spot room in my bed...The dogs make sure of that puppy wave

Ah L4L, I used to let my cats sleep with me. Somehow they always ended up on my head or snuggled down under the covers at my feet OR worse yet, sleeping on my chest and batting my nose to wake me up. Got really bad when hubby #2 put his foot down and made me reinstall the bedroom door. Had it shut with no cats allowed from 1995 till this December. Missed sleeping with the furry purring creatures, but hubby insisted on some fur free space.

Resident drunk lady at the Apartments went off in the ambulance (again) this afternoon. Probably fell again. She's been amping up the drinking lately. Still feel sorry for her, cause she's a nice gal when sober. Scary to watch her walking home with a new bottle at all hours and staggering down the sidewalk. I watch her as does my neighbor next door to be sure she isn't lying in the gutter injured. Guess today her luck wasn't so good. Off she went. Probably be back in 3 days after they get her sober again. This in an on-going drama.

I think our rain is over. Had some nice heavy, steady stuff. Everything is wet. Hope it makes all my flowers grow. Rain is magic.

L4L, we have a sleep number bed have had it for 8 years. We love it. It does take time to find the right number that fits your body. When we first had it the air bag on my side had a leak. I was crawling out of a hole in the mornings. Called the Sleep Number company, they sent out a new one right away. They have great customer support. I do believe that they have a 100 night trial. Don't like it call and send it back.

Good luck.
