Hello, while waiting for a reply to my other game problem I saw Dracula 4, have done all the others so bought it and was enjoying very much till I got to the part where the character has to phone about an inscription. I am downstairs by the front door as instructed and when I click on the phone the screen goes black and back to desktop. Please help I now have two games I can't play!

Lozza,
I have no solution for Dracula 4 except you can try uninstalling and re-installing.
I played Dracula 4 on Windows 8 using the default antivirus that comes with Windows 8 (Microsoft Security Essentials renamed to Defender in Windows 8). If you're using a different antivirus, you may have to add the game to the antivirus exceptions list so it won't block the game. If you installed to C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86) , try uninstalling and install to an unprotected location, like your user's Documents folder.

As for Sherlock vs. Jack, Rushes answered your post in ***your thread in Hints***. The problem with hotspots on the wall not showing up at certain resolutions was a problem in the beta. I don't remember which resolution allowed you to see the hotspot. It wasn't just "widescreen" vs "full screen." Try different resolutions. Also, some of the hotspots were so small that they were difficult to find even when they were showing up.

Frogwares support suggested 1024x768 resolution here ***web archive link to Frogwares site***

Great I have managed to do the Sherlock it worked but in some scenes the mouse is hard to control and goes wild at times I am patiently ploughing through though. Thanks every one who answered. Only got to sort out Dracula 4. Will try the anti virus thing have done so before so here's hoping.

Hello again I have done as you suggested, uninstalled and re-installed Dracula 4. I turned off my antivirus etc also. I restarted from scratch the game up to the point where it shut down.......it shut down again! I have been trying to play this game on my old XP, I have a laptop which is Windows 7. Is it possible do you think if I downloaded the game onto the laptop it may be happier to run past the shutdown point?

I would say that it's possible that it would run better for you, providing that your laptop meets the system requirements for the game. wave

Dracula 4 system requirements list a video card with 1GB of video RAM -- MUCH higher than you'd expect for this type of game and much higher than Dracula 3 required (Dracula 3 only required 64MB of video RAM -- only one sixteenth as much as Dracula 4). Though Dracula 4 may run with less than 1GB of video memory on some computers, this is not guaranteed. (I seem to remember someone ran it with only 512MB of video memory -- only half of what was listed). My XP computer came with a card that only had 128MB of video memory -- which was a lot when the computer was new but is insufficient for many new games and is 1/8 as much as the requirements for Dracula 4.

Dracula 4 runs fine with Windows 7 and even Windows 8.
However if you don't have enough video memory, it doesn't matter what version of Windows you have.

It's usually the capability of the video card and not the version of Windows that determines whether newer games will run.

I see I understand. I had a lot of problems with the game Sherlock Holmes and the Rose tattoo. Some one your end sent me a thing called Abandon Loader, it really helped and glossed over the glitch or whatever it was. Would it help me with this game please? Should I just download it to my windows 7?

I'm not familiar with Abandon Loader, but the description I found said
  • Abandon Loader provides a front-end interface designed to maintain compatibility and simplify configuration of old DOS games on modern PC's.

According to one website, Abandon Loader incorporates VDMSound, which allows it to emulate old "unofficial" VESA modes that are not supported by modern video cards and their drivers, as well as providing sound in DOS games. Rose Tattoo used VESA 1.2 according to the game box.

Abandon Loader is not going to help you with Dracula 4, which is not a DOS game and does not use unsupported VESA modes from 1995. It might help you with DOS games (or early Windows games from around 1995 or so, like Rose Tattoo).

A solution that helped you with a game from 1996 (Rose Tattoo) is unlikely to help you with a game from 2013 (Dracula 4) because the requirements of the games are so different -- and the problems you're apt to encounter with the two games have very different causes.

I see thank you. I have good news for us all, I downloaded Dracula 4 onto my laptop and it works just great (so far). Went straight past the hiccup and I am well into the game. thank you all for your patience and help with this. My laptop has very large memory muscles my son tells me so problem solved. Be seeing you no doubt soon. Bye.
