Taking Syd's word that real GBers never get tired of lists, here is this years thread.
For those who haven't been here before, the aim is to provide a list of adventure game recommendations from the collected wisdom of us all. It is intended to help those of us who haven't played every game ever made decide what to play next. Lasts years results, with links to walkthroughs and reviews, can be found above in the links menu.
The key is to list games that you would recommend to others to play in this day and age. Your all time favourite game that can only be played on a Commodore 64 should not therefore be included.
There are rules, but there are no prizes

1. You can recommend a maximum of 15 games. You can choose to recommend less.
2. You cannot recommend a series. If you want to recommend all the Tex Murphy games, that will take 5 seperate recommendations, one for each game.
3. Myst and RealMyst will be counted as one game.

4. (This rule has been added as a result of the following posts). In addition to the 15 you may then add 3 non-adventure games.

We keep the thread open for three weeks, and I will post intermittent updates and pithy insights.

I'm going to throw my vote in on the side of allowing any type of game to be listed. Adventure gamers aren't the only ones who read and post at GameBoomers so everyone should be able to list their favorite games no matter what genre they are.

I agree with Syd, Adventure games are not my only
passion, I enjoy action adventure and once in a while an RPG.

I think action/adventures should have their own Twisted List.

Otherwise you'd need a lot more than a 15 game maximum.

What! the adventure twisty list including action and rpgs? This would cause a divorce in this household because I love rpgs and Gordon wouldn't want to put them in our list!

Seriously, it's a good idea but doesn't the action/rpg twisty list belong on the action/rpg forum? Why not have two lists, one on each forum? This is the adventure discussion board and the adventure twisty list is an institution now, what a shame to change it because adventures deserve a list of their own.

Trust Syd to make things complicated <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="tongue.gif" />
The list was originally constructed to be for adventure games, as this site is predominantly about adventure games. So we wikll keep it that way.
But in deference to the large number of adventure game players that are prepared to come out of the dark and admit they do sometimes stray and play something else, and as I make the rules you will be allowed to list 3 non-adventure games AFTER your 15 adventure recommendations. I stress after so that I can keep the lists straight. And 3 is only a few I know but it needs to be manageable.
And no debate will be entered into as to what is and isn't an adventure, so don't even dare to try <img border="0" alt="" title="" src="graemlins/pacify.gif" />
Seriously though, I trust the amended rules will cater for everyone, whilst maintaining the original purpose of the list.
I have ammended the rules above and added my games.

Just so you don't think I'm trying to sneak one past you, would you consider the Quest for Glorys hybrids or RPGs rather than adventures?

Here's my list. I had a really hard time placing them in any kind of order. #1 and #2 are really tied for first place, and #3 to #10 are tied for second place.

Two other great games were 14) Beyond Atlantis and 15) Atlantis

I still have Beyond Atlantis 2 sitting on my shelf because I can't get it to play on my curent machine. I'm looking forward to Watchmaker and Syberia, but these don't count yet.

ONly 3 non adventure games. You have got to be kidding. How in the world could I only pick 3.

Now what about action adventure games. Last year on the list were gmaes like Outcast and ROTH. So are those not allowed anymore in the top 15 then?

I know 3 isn't a lot Zanthia but I was simply trying to make room for everyone, whilst at the same time sticking to the original intention of creating an adventure game list.
You are right that some hybrid games got on the list last year and I expect they will again. Not everyone has the same idea about what constitutes an adventure game. Everyone will construct their list according to their own definitions. The result will be an eclectic mix of tastes and opinions.

Since this is the Adventure Discussion forum, the weight being on Adventure games seems entirely appropriate! Mayhaps another Boomer would like to develop a Twisty List for RPG/Action and Other at some point in time?

Hey, FLOTSAM, what happened to SCHIZM? I seem to recall that it was #7 on your list last year.

Advpuzlov, I just had to find room for Isabelle. You will notice Ring has gone too, which remains one of my favourites but would I recommend it to others to play over some other games??
Schizm is in the same boat - one of my all time best games but I was looking to balance my list a bit so something had to give.
BTW, Ring went to accomodate Black Dahlia so you should be pleased

The Dark Side is a great place to be. Come on
over. It really feels like an adventure.

Its great that more of the games GameBoomers play will be on a list (RPG/Action List).

A problem I see is classifying games. It appears that games in the future are going to make it ever harder.

So, I suggest there be one list of favorite games. On this list are the favorite games of the Boomer voting. The end result list will have a ranking of the most popular games of the GameBoomers.

To see the most popular adventure game, go down the list and whatever game you consider adventure you come to first, then that is the most popular.

If you want to see the most popular Action game, then go down the list until you come to a game you consider an action game and that is the most popular action game.

And so forth. That way, The SIMS is included, as is Stronghold and (why not) Snood!

Just my two cents worth as I am afraid it just gets harder from here.

My apologies for the lack of updates. Someone has to keep the real world safe <img border="0" alt="" title="" src="graemlins/woozy.gif" />
Some details to date:

Top 5 are TLJ GK2 Riven ZorkGI Myst and Grim Fandango (tied).

The top two games have been recommended by at least every second person who has posted.

38 games are into double digits.

57 games have at least 5 recommendations.

115 games have received at least 2 recommendations.

44 games have been recommended by at least 10% of the persons posting.

178 games in all have been recommended.

The Watchmaker has 2 already, and Syberia and Darkfall were listed on the strength of their demos.

I remain hopelessly inadequate on the non-adventure summary. It might have to wait till the end.
We usually keep this thread open for 3 weeks, so it will close next weekend. We are still short of last years total so keep them coming. I will post final tallies and an alphabetical list shortly thereafter.

Flotsam, check out ChipsNBits.com and Amazon.com for those Barbie games. You may not have access to the mall stores like I do but I usually find the Barbie games available at KayBee Toys, ToysRUs, Electronic Boutique, Frye's, Best Buy, Office Depot & probably Office Max too, Gamestop, to name a few. Do a search of the internet and ask for "Barbie PC games" with the quotes to narrow down the search. It sounds like Australia has a lack of gaming stores or distributors willing to ship to your area, which must be very hard for you.

And the winners are…..The Longest Journey and Outcast
So that’s it for another year. As with previous years, two posts follow, one an alphabetical list, the other from top to bottom.
Alternative titles are shown where known. I have taken some liberties with the names of some games in the alphabetical list in order to list series games together.
An asterix indicates it is available for Mac.
All up, 89 people posted and 179 adventure games were recommended.
This is the third year and each time we have had a different top game. This years most recommended game, The Longest Journey, got out in front early and stayed there.
There were 5 new games in the top 10 compared to last year, the most notable movers being Zork GI, up from 15th to 6th, and Myst: Exile from 13th to equal 4th. Going the other way, Shivers went from 5th to 12th and Timelapse from 6th to 16th.
Others to move noticeably were Monkey Island 1 and 2, Discworld, Nancy Drew: Message in a Haunted Mansion and Simon the Sorcerer, some going up and others down. The rest you will have to look at yourself .
Temujin deserves a special mention. It didn’t appear on last years list at all, but got double figures this year.
Games to watch out for next year will probably be The Watchmaker, Syberia and Dark Fall, all of which managed an appearance this year despite only being available for about 5 minutes.
The non-adventures proved slightly problematic, with some featuring on both lists (and non-adventure players having odd counting systems <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="tongue.gif" /> ). Where a game appeared on both lists, I have combined the votes and listed them in both lists. A third post follows showing those non-adventures which were mentioned more than once.
All errors are my own, but are hopefully minimal. I remain as ever hopelessly inadequate when it comes to using the more sophisticated formatting aspects of this BB, so I apologise for the formatting.
Finally, as I said the last two years, any game on this list must be worth playing as someone thought it was worthy enough to mention.
