I would like to upgrade my video card. I have a RADEON 9250 AGP 128.0 MB.
Thats really a low end video card. What better card can I replace it with.
Thanks
Richard

Hi Richard

You can try upgrading it with the Radeon 3650 AGP card. I was very happy with that card untill I got my new computer last year (August 2013). If you're looking for a another card, it'll have to be a card that'll fit into an AGP slot, though.

As always, make sure that your power supply is adequate for the new video card. wave

And that the new card will fit within the case.

I just put a different video card in my other pc but it won't play some games.
The card is (EVGA nVidia GeForce 6200 512MB VGA/DVI/TV-out AGP Video Card.)
My power supply is only 250 watt is this why it won't play some games. Thanks

It won't play the
Tesla Effect: A Tex Murphy Adventure demo.
Another one will play but the cursor moves real slow.
Shadows of the Vatican Act 2: Wrath

Your slow video card is why you're having trouble with those games.
In order to add a faster video card, you'll have to add a better power supply with more wattage.

Most of the "new" AGP video cards available now aren't that good.
You might be able to get something like a used Nvidia 7600GT (which was a good video card for its time) to play older 3D adventure games from around 2006. But you'd still have to update the power supply.

Since Compaq makes computer cases in all different sizes, there's no way we can tell you what power supply might fit it without at least a model number to go by.

That's an old style ATX power supply -

Connectors:
1 X 20-Pin Motherboard Connector
5 X 4-Pin Molex Connectors
2 x SATA Connectors
1 X 4-Pin Motherboard Connector
2 X 4-Pin Floppy Connectors

Almost any standard ATX power supply should fit, but depending on what's wired to the cables you may have problems finding a replacement. How many of the 4 pin Molex connectors are plugged in to devices? Are the Hard drive(s) SATA or PATA?

Since it's an older PC I wouldn't spend too much upgrading it - take a look at something like this as a place to start.

RAIDMAX RX-450K Continuous 450 watts ATX 12V v2.3/EPS 12V Power Supply

Being that it's a Compaq, it's hard to say if it'll be a perfect fit.

That sounds about right, check the physical dimensions of the original PSU just to make sure the replacement will fit. I've run across problems where some manufactures have used non standard sizes.

As Jenny said, the 7600 GT is as good as you're going to get with an AGP interface. It isn't going to scream, but it will be a definite improvement.

A 9400 GT is not a very fast card (it's actually slower than the 7600 GT)
http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=435&card2=578

However if it's playing games to your satisfaction, it should still work in Windows 7.
If you want a faster card, your 475 Watt power supply should be able to support one.
Are you going to want another Geforce card or are you OK with a Radeon card?

Go to DXDIAG. Don't know what your operating system is, but it will probable work if you type it into the search box in Start.

I believe the Nvidia 7600GT has two DVI outputs. If you have the old VGA cables, you can get a VGA to DVI adapter such as this one at Newegg. Make sure the male and female ends correspond to your cables.

It doesn't matter which one you use. There are two for people who use two monitors at once. This was a high end video card for it's time!

Draclvr,I just install the video card you sent me but wouldn't work. My power supply is only 250w I think that's why it wouldn't work. Tried to put this power supply in my old pc but the holes wouldn't line up, (raidmax rx-450k continuous 450 watts atx 12v v2.3/eps 12v power supply) It's the same size is the other one. I wonder if I should line up the holes and drill new ones. What do you think I should do. Thanks
Richard

You may be right about that. The websites I looked at recommended 350W for a 7600GT.

What was the computer model that you're putting this power supply in?
We might want to check that it doesn't need proprietary connections.

I "think" I remember that this is an older HP computer??? If it is, can you tell us the model number? There are tons of replacement and power supply upgrades for HP computers.

I've done some searching and looking around and if this is one of the ultra slim computers, you may NOT be able to upgrade the power supply because it's very proprietary to this particular computer.

Oh, that's good to know. Are you sure that's the model of the computer? My searches for the D530 only came up with the same one Jenny posted. It's called a convertible mini-tower in my search results. There are letter after the model number that indicate which form factor they are. The D530s is the small form factor; the D530c is the convertible mini-tower and the D530u is the ultra slim tower.

D530 cmt. I found some other letters hard to tell if that's a o or a c. CMT or a OMT. I think it's a CMT.

Strange. I did a search at HP for the serial number you gave.
I would have thought their serial numbers would be unique, even if their model numbers aren't.

What about this one, Richard... Does it look like it might work? It's 365 watts which might me enough since there is very little else in this computer. I didn't see any Molex connectors though - what kind of connectors do you need for things like your hard drive, CD drive etc?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Desktop-240V-365W-Power-Supply-HP-437357-001-SP-437799-001-/390831634562

Also found this one that does have Molex connectors, but it's pretty pricey. Not sure what that bracket is about.

As I mentioned for the other one, the problem is that it only has SATA connectors... If your hard drive and CD drive use Molex, then it won't work unless you get adapters.

Here is a picture of one of the adapters that has both ends. Look at the 4 pin Molex end (white) and then look at the connections for your drives and other hardware. See which kind they need. There are two connections for the hardware - one is for power and one is for data. So be sure you have enough connections

SATA to Molex

Where did you find the other power supply? Do the holes seem to be the same as your old power supply?

I used the Full Reply Screen option and then clicked on the link option. It's the little earth icon second from the left when you open up the Full Reply Screen. I copied the url of the web page and pasted it and then just typed in the words I wanted.

The URL of the webpage is the address line at the top of your browser. Since it depends on which browser you're using, I can't say exactly where, but it should be at the top and maybe over to the left. It should say something like, "www.gameboomers.com" (just an example) and maybe with more stuff after it. You can just highlight it, right click and select copy and the then paste it into the link tool in the Full Reply Screen.

You don't see a button for "Switch to Full Reply Screen" under the "Quick Reply" Window at the bottom of the page?

I always do it manually. For example, without the extra spaces...

[ u r l = h t t p : w w w . e x a m p l e . c o m ] E x a m p l e [ / u r l ]

[ u r l = whatever the http link is ] What you want to call the link [ / u r l ]

or click the Quote button at the bottom of Draclvr's post so you can see how it's constructed.

When you are posting here at GB, there are 3 options at the bottom of the white space for your reply. Submit, Preview Reply and Switch to Full Reply Screen. When you click on Switch to Full Reply Screen, you will get all the options for smilies, links, quotes, etc.

I usually do it manually too as that's the only option we have over at Mystery Manor and I'm so used to it.

Did you click on the little earth looking icon? When you do, it first asks for the URL... HTTP is already there, so you may have to delete that first so it isn't repeated. Paste your URL - the entire thing as Jenny said - into the space. Next screen asks you what you want your text to be - type it in and hit OK.

Your link above doesn't work either - part of it may be missing.

Now you're rocking and rolling!

The cheaper 365 watt power supply is a used one which is why it's cheaper. That shouldn't be a problem though. But, you've never answered about what kind of connections you have to your hard drive or CD drive or whatever else you have in this computer. This power supply only has 5 SATA connectors, but no Molex connectors. If your hardware has Molex connections, then you would need to get enough SATA to Molex adapters to make all your connections. Also as I said earlier, you have 2 connections to make for each piece of hardware - data and power. So be sure you have carefully reviewed exactly what you will be needing.

No, you need to look at the connections on your hardware... You've also got to specify which computer we're talking about. You're getting me mixed up with dealing with getting a power supply to run your old PC with the 7600 GT video card I sent you and the main PC.

I'm already easily confused, so just one subject at a time, please!

Draclvr sorry I will stick to the old computer with a AGP card. Back to a power supply to fit my old pc. Let me look and see what kind of connections are on the power supply that I want to put in my old pc. That web site you had on your post a while back won't load. SATA to Molex. Could you do it again

Richard

I just tried the SATA to Molex link, Richard, and it works for me; maybe try clicking on the link again?

Will do Marian ok now. What color are the Molex connectors on the power supply. I looked at the power supply that I want to put in my old pc and they are all black.

Richard, the color has nothing to do with the connectors... it's the shape and the number of pins. I posted a link to that adapter because it shows what both a SATA connector looks like and what a Molex connector looks like. We don't care what's on the power supply right now because we know - they are all SATA. As I've said in a couple of other posts, what you need to know is what kind of connections are on your hardware. Look the hard drive and the CD drive and whatever else is in this computer... what connections THEY NEED is the question you need to answer.

Molex connections have 4 large pins. Please find out what your HARDWARE has and we'll go from there.

I assume Richard's computer has Molex connectors because the connectors in the pictures of the computer on eBay are Molex.

Just get some adapters along with the power supply.

Here's a picture that shows the difference between SATA and Molex power connections. The top one is Molex and the bottom is SATA. As you can see, you couldn't possibly plug them into the same power connection because they are completely different shapes.

Thanks, Jenny. The 2nd picture is one I just added to my little "catalog." I also assume the connections on the hardware are Molex, but just want Richard to be sure. The one on Ebay has had a hard drive upgrade.
