…like we did last summer [Razz] Here begins the 5th annual game recommendations list. For new members, the aim of this thread is to compile a list of adventure game recommendations from the collected wisdom of us all. It is intended to be a resource to help people decide what game to play next. When I first came here, my best source of game recommendations was other boomers. I had no idea there were so many adventure games (my wife still wishes that was the case [Big Grin] ). I wanted not only to talk about games with other similarly afflicted folk, but find out what was good and what should I play. The resulting list, and lists for each subsequent year, are the collected wisdom of all participating boomers, and are down at the archive pages, and last years top 15 even found a place on the home page. The objective is to list 15 games that you would recommend to someone to play in this day and age. They are not necessarily your own favourite 15 games but they might be. You might however decide to recommend a cross-section of styles or types. You might love a particular game but believe it is too much a product of your own idiosyncracies to recommend, or you might not recommend it because it is notoriously hard to get running on anything later than a 386 machine. There is no rule that says you can’t recommend such games; it is up to you. No game is excluded, if it meets the criteria of being an adventure game. We all know what that is when we see it, so don’t get too hung up on criteria. We are all friends after all. There are some rules though, and as always I reserve the right to make up more as we go . I don’t think that has actually ever happened (I might have clarified something) but like any lawyer it makes me feel important to be in control . 1. You can recommend a maximum of 15 games. You can choose to recommend less. 2. You cannot recommend a series. If you want to recommend all the Tex Murphy games, that will take 5 seperate recommendations, one for each game. 3. Myst and RealMyst will be counted as one game. 4. Adventure games only please (other games will get there own list somewhere else later on thanks to nickie’s sucking up ). We keep the thread open for about three weeks, and I will post intermittent updates. It is compulsory to get more posts than the year before. So here in no particular order are my 15 recommendations. Riven The Longest Journey GK2: The Beast Within Syberia 2 Myst III: Exile Morpheus Byzantine Dark Fall BS3: The Sleeping Dragon Faust Blackstone Chronicles Zork Grand Inquisitor Schizm The Dark Eye

It's hard to pick just 15. And hard to choose which won't be included, like the Journeyman Project games, Toonstruck, Timelapse, Amerzone, Discworld, Ripper, Tex Murphy, etc. are also so good. (I'm not sure how well Tex Murphy, Ripper, and Toonstruck work on XP though, or this list might look a little different).
I'm assuming all of these will work on a modern XP computer, either with an emulator or au naturel. In alphabetical order -
Beyond Atlantis (aka Atlantis II) Day of the Tentacle Gabriel Knight 1: Sins of the Fathers Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of the Sacred... Grim Fandango The Longest Journey Morpheus Myst (or Myst Masterpiece or RealMyst) Myst III: Exile Obsidian Sanitarium Secret of Monkey Island Shivers Siberia 1
You can tell I like both puzzle types and story types.

Interesting to me, is the fact that I dropped off two of the classics that I chose last year in favor of Black Mirror and Runaway, which I believe were the "cream of the crop" from last year's "harvest." It's always good to see some newer games finding their way into the list!!

Whilst I was tallying up where we are at this stage I kept thinking "why didn't I vote for that one??". Limiting to 15 really is hard So far more than 160 games have received recommendations. The top 3 are Longest Journey, Syberia and Dark Fall. Three freeware games have received a vote, and 43 games have been mentioned that weren't mentioned last year. Tex and Gabe are still polling well, as is Guybrush. George and Nico remain solid vote pullers as well, and all but one of Nancy's outings has already received at least one recommendation. New releases this year are probably doing better than in previous years. To the best of my knowledge the oldest game recommended comes from 1987, and the newest game recommended hasn't been released yet!! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="confused.gif" /> More later

maybe we should have a top 10 worst games-- games you would only recommend to your worst enemy then the quivering can be at the head of that followed by the scroll which is a masterpiece compared to the quivering.

Its only early days but that doesn't stop me reaching conclusions. One such is that the gaming universe is starting to take note. Consider Sanitarium. An old game, yet it already has more recommendations than last year. It might drop on and off peoples recommendations for all sorts of reasons, but it is reasonable to assume that it is less likely to be added to the list of a person who didn't recommend it last year and who had already played it, than it is to be on the list of someone who hadn't played it last year. Which means that persons who hadn't played it found out about it somehow. Lighthouse is the same. Dare we presume...?? What else? Top 3 remains pretty much the same, and no one will as yet admit that The Scroll is a favourite. Good to see Ceremony of Innocence getting a mention, and perhaps surprising that Rama hasn't yet been. 120 games have more than one recommendation, and the game with the most votes which I haven't played is Discworld Noir.

Picking 15 for "general audience" recommendation is a heck of a lot easier than picking my favorite 15. Trying to cut THAT list down is like ripping my heart out. Myst Exile Riven Obsidian Zork the Grand Inquisitor Gabriel Knight, Sins of the Father Gabriel Knight, Blood ofthe Sacred Tex Murphy Pandora Directive Dark Fall Syberia I Timelapse Riddle of the Sphinx Shivers I Grim Fandango The Dig Thanks once again, Flotsam!!

Good point Colpet - I didn't know that. That will teach me to conjecture . And Rama got mentioned. But I was right about Discworld Noir 2 weeks to go, and Kate motors on.

We are about half way and the most recommended games in some of those series with 3 games or more are Broken Sword 2, Discworld Noir, Gabriel Knight 2, Journeyman 3, Monkey Island 3, Riven and Pandora Directive.

flotsam, I read you, so here I am. granny, you're absolutely right - I, for one have been spending far too much time in the Pandora-Stitchman realm (it's so addictive)! Anyhow, here's my list. 1. Myst (my first game and it will always be No. 1 for me.) The rest are alphabetical: 2. Beyond Atlantis (aka Atlantis 2) 3. Broken Sword 1, Circle of Blood (aka Shadow of the Templars) 4. Broken Sword 2, The Smoking Mirror 5. Kyrandia 1 6. Monkey Island 1, Secret of 7. Riddle of the Sphinx 8. Riven 9. Schizm 10. Timelapse The last 5 I haven't played yet, but feel certain if I had they'd be in my top 10 and I would recommend them to others. 11. Dark Fall 12. Morpheus 13. Obsidian 14. Syberia 1 15. Syberia 2 Whew! Now I'm on record. Jema

One week to go. On a quick count 187 games have been recommended. 43 games have been recommended by at least 10% of particpants, 4 games by over half of those participating, and the top game (so far) has been recommended by nearly 65%.

I will post the final tally early Monday morning my time, which is on Sunday evening for many of you. This will give me time to get the non-adventure thread kicked off before going off line for a few days while I move house. As for the running tally well Kate just keeps on keeping on

Thanks flotsam, If you did not take the time every year, I am afraid the Twisty List would be lost. I have four Sheila's here, one bathroom, two are teenagers. I am just lucky, that I leave for work early. I cannot move house, too heavy. I own some land about one kilometer away. I will build there a dream house.

A little bit early as a surprise (and cos I have a big real life day . Nearly 100 participants, and almost 200 games recommended. Its always fun and its always a pleasure. Some final observations. Newish games picked up votes, no doubt as more people played them, which meant some games had to suffer. Notable in this respect were Zork Nemesis and Amber, which had their totals more than halved. It doesn’t mean they are any less good in their own right of course. Some older games also notably picked up their recommendations. Lighthouse and Sanitarium were two such games, the latter no doubt benefiting from being re-released. Good games of course just keep on keeping on. GK2, Myst, Riven and Grim Fandango were all in the top 5 in our original list and are still thereabouts this time. Freeware games made an appearance for the first time, and some essentially backyard offerings (some of which did get commercial releases) did well, Dark Fall being the obvious standout. 50 games were mentioned that weren’t mentioned last year, many new but some quite old. Beneath a Steel Sky and Flight of the Amazon Queen were two of the latter. Finally, there is a new top game, the 4th in 5 years, recommended by about 2/3 of all participants. As always there is a numerical and an alphabetical list. I have taken some liberties with names to get series games together on the alphabetical list, and because of some personal foibles - I refuse to call the Schizm games Mysterious Journey 1 and 2. Errors are all my own. And as I say every year, there are no losers here. Every game on this list made at least one participants top 15 recommendations. Happy playing 68 Syberia 64 The Longest Journey 56 Dark Fall 48 Grim Fandango 42 Myst 2: Riven 41 Myst/RealMyst 38 Sanitarium 37 Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within 37 Syberia 2 36 Myst 3: Exile 35 Broken Sword 1: Shadow of the Templars/Circle of Blood 34 Black Mirror 30 Zork Grand Inquisitor 24 Amerzone 24 Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned 24 Timelapse 22 Monkey Island 3: Curse of Monkey Island 22 Morpheus 22 Obsidian 22 Shivers 21 Riddle of the Sphinx: An Egyptian Adventure 20 Blackstone Chronicles 20 Broken Sword 2: The Smoking Mirror 18 Atlantis 2 18 Lighthouse 18 Zork Nemesis 17 Neverhood 17 Tex Murphy: Pandora Directive 16 Discworld Noir 16 Black Dahlia 16 Gabriel Knight 1: Sins of the Fathers 16 Myst: Uru 16 Runaway 16 Schizm: Mysterious Journey 14 Broken Sword 3: The Sleeping Dragon 13 Journeyman Project 3: Legacy of Time 12 Amber: Journeys Beyond 12 Faust 12 Monkey Island 1: The Secret of Monkey Island 12 Phantasmagoria 12 Schizm 2: Chameleon 11 Day of the Tentacle 10 Post Mortem 10 Tex Murphy: Under a Killing Moon 9 Discworld 8 Byzantine: The Betrayal 8 Discworld 2: Missing Presumed..? 8 RHEM 7 Journey to the Centre of the Earth 7 Last Express, The 7 Tex Murphy: Overseer 6 Atlantis 3 6 Bad Mojo 6 Dracula Resurrection 6 Monkey Island 2: Le Chuck’s Revenge 6 Nancy Drew: Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake 6 Riddle of the Sphinx 2: The Omega Stone 6 Sherlock Holmes: Case of the Rose Tattoo 6 Shivers 2: Harvest of Souls 5 Arthurs Knights 1: Tales of Chivalry 5 Callahans Crosstime Saloon 5 Dark Side of the Moon 5 Dig, The 5 Dracula: The Last Sanctuary 5 Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis 5 Jack the Ripper 5 Journeyman Project 2: Buried in Time 5 Kings Quest 6: Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow 5 Kings Quest 7: The Princeless Bride 5 Monkey Island 4: Escape from Monkey Island 5 Nancy Drew: Message in a Haunted Mansion 5 Salaambo 5 Sam and Max Hit the Road 5 Simon the Sorcerer 4 7th Guest 4 Blade Runner 4 Deathgate 4 Eric the Unready 4 Full Throttle 4 Nightlong: Union City Conspiracy 4 Ripper 4 Temujin 3 Arrival, The 3 Bioscopia 3 Cameron Files: Loch Ness 3 Crystal Key 2: The Far Realm 3 Cydonia/Lightbringer 3 Dark Eye 3 Egypt 3: The Egyptian Prophecy 3 Harvest 3 I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream 3 Messenger/Louvre; The Final Curse 3 Nancy Drew: Treasure in the Royal Tower 3 Nancy Drew: Danger on Deception Island 3 Phantasmagoria 2: Puzzle of Flesh 3 Physicus 3. Thanks Arwen - I have made that change. I have left it as a Myst game though to group it with the others alphabetically. Tig, as far as I know it hasn't been released but Laura voted for it. From anyone else I would have assumed it was an error, but I know she moves in lofty circles and thought she may have had a sneak peak. If not, I will amend.

Well, I did mean DarkFall 2, but since it hasn't been "released" yet - you can take away it's little 2 and make it DarkFall the first. But - it's going to be amazing....really.

I was curious who had voted for Isabelle (I'm one of the very few people who liked this game), but I can't find it anywhere?

Thanks so much Flotsam. I can see there are a few older games that I still have to play. This list is so helpful! Melanie

I try ... I really do to not tease you guys with little details about games. But then "evil Laura" comes along and well it is a losing battle. Drat that alter ego and the game she came in with. .
