A kleptomaniac is a person who helps himself because he can't help himself.

Did You Know?

Q. Why do men's clothes have buttons on the right while women's clothes have buttons on the left?

A. When buttons were invented, they were very expensive and worn primarily by the rich. Since most people are right-handed, it is easier to push buttons on the right through holes on the left. Because wealthy women were dressed by maids, dressmakers put the buttons on the maid's right! And that's where women's buttons have remained since.

Q. Why do ships and aircraft use 'mayday' as their call for help?

A. This comes from the French word m'aidez - meaning 'help me' - and is pronounced approximately, 'mayday.'

Q. Why are zero scores in tennis called 'love'?

A. In France , where tennis became popular, round zero on the scoreboard looked like an egg and was called 'l'oeuf,' which is French for 'egg.' When tennis was introduced in the US , Americans (mis)pronounced it 'love.'

Q. Why do X's at the end of a letter signify kisses?

A. In the Middle Ages, when many people were unable to read or write, documents were often signed using an X. Kissing the X represented an oath to fulfill obligations specified in the document. The X and the kiss eventually became synonymous.

Q. Why is shifting responsibility to someone else called 'passing the buck'?

A. In card games, it was once customary to pass an item, called a buck, from player to player to indicate whose turn it was to deal. If a player did not wish to assume the responsibility of dealing, he would 'pass the buck' to the next player.

Q. Why do people clink their glasses before drinking a toast?

A. It used to be common for someone to try to kill an enemy by offering him a poisoned drink. To prove to a guest that a drink was safe, it became customary for a guest to pour a small amount of his drink into the glass of the host. Both men would drink it simultaneously. When a guest trusted his host, he would only touch or clink the host's glass with his own.

Q. Why are people in the public eye said to be 'in the limelight'?

A. Invented in 1825,limelight was used in lighthouses and theatres by burning a cylinder of lime which produced a brilliant light. In the theatre, a performer 'in the limelight' was the center of attention.

Q. Why is someone who is feeling great 'on cloud nine'?

A. Types of clouds are numbered according to the altitudes they attain, with nine being the highest cloud If someone is said to be on cloud nine, that person is floating well above worldly cares.

Q. In golf, where did the term 'Caddie' come from?

A. When Mary Queen of Scots went to France as a young girl, Louis, King of France, learned that she loved the Scots game 'golf.' So he had the first course outside of Scotland built for her enjoyment. To make sure she was properly chaperoned (and guarded) while she played, Louis hired cadets from a military school to accompany her.

Mary liked this a lot and when returned to Scotland (not a very good idea in the long run), she took the practice with her. In French, the word cadet is pronounced 'ca-day' and the Scots changed it into 'caddie.

Q. Why are many coin banks shaped like pigs?

A. Long ago, dishes and cookware in Europe were made of a dense orange clay called 'pygg'. When people saved coins in jars made of this clay, the jars became known as 'pygg banks.' When an English potter misunderstood the word, he made a container that resembled a pig. And it caught on.

Q. Did you ever wonder why dimes, quarters and half dollars have notches (milling), while pennies and nickels do not?

A. The US Mint began putting notches on the edges of coins containing gold and silver to discourage holders from shaving off small quantities of the precious metals. Dimes, quarters and half dollars are notched because they used to contain silver. Pennies and nickels aren't notched because the metals they contain are not valuable enough to shave.

Oh Ana! Mud and waterfalls! I wanna go too!

So today, after a week of getting the 'please insert proper boot disc' error when I tried to turn on my computer, and then yesterday taking about 10 tries to finally get it to boot up, I am pleased that it booted up on the first try today. Probably just a fluke, but yesterday in desperation (despite my computer guru friend telling me that I was just wasting my time), I unplugged a lot of connections, reset circuit breakers on the plug in bars, blew canned air into every opening of the computer base, and everything else in sight, then turned on my computer. It came up on first try. Left it on ALL day yesterday fearing a major crash. This morning, I punched the button, prayed a lot, and it booted up just fine. Maybe I was right? Dust in the works that was causing a slight current glitch? Something not quite right somewhere. My Dad always started with the wall plug and worked his way up when something electronic or electrical was giving him problems. He said just a loose plug could cause a lot of things.

Hopefully Dad and I am right but I still have the back up files just in case. Crossing fingers, toes, and eyes that my hard drive loves me today.

Went to do a load of wash and discovered last week's underwear still in the dryer. Thank goodness it wasn't the washer! Wondered why my undie drawer was so empty.

OH news! In the case of our local school district which has several members under indictment for fraud and corruption, etc., Now all but TWO of the offenders has taken a plea. Hooray! And it's the two TOP guys that finally saw the light yesterday. The ousted Superintendent and the ousted former district board member who was his second in command both took guilty pleas to felonies. Punishment will be (if all goes well) 3 years each in jail, 20k fines, and long probations after plus community service. Dunno until June if the judge will be tough on them, but they at least spared everyone a long involved trial. My guess is that since the 3rd in command (who said she would never plead guilty) is the one who sparked this latest plea deal. She of course knows everything about everything and you can bet she agreed to testify AGAINST the top 2 guys as a condition of her reduced sentence. So I assume the 2 decided they were cooked. Now only 2 remain, both of which are pretty much blameless. I'm waiting to hear that their charges have been dropped. Things are looking up.

WARNING! This person is extremely blonde...please type SLOWLY.

Ahhhh, been up for hours but just made it to the den to sit and sip and surf for a sec before we gather dogs up and go walking and then take Sky and Keoki to a charity dog wash at my vet's. Was going to take them all, but Seagy and Soot have both have traumatic vet visits recently, so will leave them home.

Son took boys to the zoo. I have yogurt on, bread feeding to make later, meat thawing for tacos, green beans in the dehydrator.wave

Back home from groceries and truely exhausted and just finished eating breakfast. One shouldn't shop groceries when she's so very hungry. Just about bought one of everything but if the pet food holds out it will be a long time befor shopping again. Elgin has a brand new super walmart which competes with our super HEB and the clerks are so tippy-toe nice I really want to avoid them.

Dark and lazy day here right now and pets sleeping and perhaps I'll join them

Games haven't arrived yet boohoo

Happy Sat all

Good evening boomies! Hubby and I hiked five miles and climbed and had a wonderful day! He hasn't been there with me in at least 14 years. It was awesome. We saw the migrating pelicans doing their mating rituals. WE went out for dinner afterwards and now I am showered and ready to work. I have a project due in the morning and another that needs a lot of work by Monday so I am going to be praying that this goes quickly tonight. grin I knew I would pay for my outing. rotfl

I hope you all had an awesome day!

Hi people. I've been just taking it east for the day. it's been a very long week of recovering from my bout with vertigo. It's taken this long to be comfortable enough to drive my car.I only went to Stop N Shop for some much needed groceries. Rob took me to my chiropractor this morning to see if he could help me with my dizziness. It did help but I'm taking one more day off, on the suggestion of my doctor. Boy, what a long week. Not my idea of taking a week off.

It looks like you all had a busy day. Ana I'm glad you had a great walk with your hubby. L4L can you give me your recipe for homemade yogurt? I'd love to try it. Pleaseandthankyou?

I'm gonna go find my pillow now. Long day.

Midgie hearts

Just do it.
