I got infested with tons of popups and I can't get rid of them. Everytime I open a page I get a popup at the bottom that says my download speeds are not fully optimized and when I try to close it out I am taken to a web page. When I close that page the popup comes back again. My malwarebytes keeps telling me that they have blocked potential sites but doesn't fix the problem.

Is there any program that will get rid of this? Also the advertisements at the bottom keep rotating but I can't get rid of them.

EDIT: I just installed and opened Mozilla Firefox (which I am using to post this) and it is not happening. So, it is obviously something that is clung on to Internet Explorer.

Have you run Malwarebytes and CCleaner yet?

Yes I've run both of them. Malwarebytes keeps popping up in the corner saying that they have blocked a malicious site but it pops up 8 or 9 times. Also is there anyway to "select all" in malwarebytes after it does a scan and there are tons of entries?

Thank you Draclvr. That definitely answered my question about the malwarebytes. The ad attacks have stopped, although I'm not sure what I did to stop them. I ran Spybot, Adaware, CCleaner, and Malwarebytes. I'm still getting a few messages from Malwarebytes about stopping malicious sites but not as many. I think I'm out of the woods. I'll definitely be more careful about downloads in the future but I thought what I was downloading was safe but obviously not.

Anyway, fingers crossed, maybe the worst is over.

Do you have Pop-up Blocker turned on in IE? If not, you might try turning it on to see if it helps. Click on the gear icon in the upper right corner, chose Internet Options, go to the Privacy tab, and click on the Pop-up box if it isn't checked. Or, from the Tools drop down, chose Pop-up and go that route to turn it on.

From your description, I am not clear on whether these popups are coming from websites as you're visiting them, or whether they're coming from malware that's installed on your computer and that's accessing the Internet to retrieve the ads without further actions on your part (without using IE). If the problem is the latter, you're not done cleaning, and blocking a popup is not preventing the malware from accessing the Internet and getting the ad -- only from displaying the ad.

Just checked in and I'm glad to hear most of the popups have stopped, but I agree with Jenny. I don't think you're out of the woods yet. Do you remember what you downloaded that you think started all this? I also didn't see a scan with your anti-virus software included in the list of scans above.

You might check in your IE add-ons and disable all of them. See if there is something in there that was installed without your permission. If there is something in there you absolutely need, just add them back one at a time. I've worked on computers where the infection spread to a new installation of Firefox too.

What started it was when I downloaded (or thought I was) Mod manager. It turned out that it was a completely different program and I was getting a panel on the left side of my screen and various advertisements rotating on the bottom of my screen. They appeared on any site I visited, including Gameboomers. I finally found a way to turn off the panel on the left and that also stopped the ads at the bottom of the screen. I also went to Control Panel and uninstalled every program that looked strange or I didn't want. Then I ran all the malware programs. I have also run a scan with Windows Defender.

Malwarebytes is no longer popping up saying it is blocking sites so it looks like (cross my fingers) it is gone. It was scary for a while because sites were opening and popups abounded and I had no control over any of it. When it first started the more I closed sites the more they opened up in a different window. Hopefully all is well now.

Also thank you Homer but I do have the popup blocker turned on in IE.

I would suggest that you continue to run scans at least once a day for a few days. Sometimes they have a sneaky way of respawning.

I imagine it was a little scary for awhile there... sounds like your screen was lighting up like a Christmas tree with popups! You can always tell your anti-virus to scan an individual file before you install it or even better, tell VirusTotal to scan it for you before you install. It scans a file or URL with over 3 dozen different anti-virus and anti-malware programs including Kaspersky and ESET etc.
