This message is written by my hubby for his company. He rarely says anything so if he thinks it's serious I pass it along. In case you haven’t heard, a security bug was discovered recently called the Heartbleed bug. I just wanted to let you know that it is very real and very dangerous. This isn’t a new virus or malware, it is a bug in the security layer of software that many, many websites and applications use to secure data transfers (encryption). It has existed for a couple of years now which means that the chance that your password or account information has been compromised is very good. The best thing you can do to protect yourself now is to change your passwords. If you can’t change all of your passwords, at least change the passwords that lead to your financial accounts (bank, credit cards, etc.) and your email password. However, changing your passwords before a site has fixed the issue will do you no good. Before changing your password, check to make sure the site is no longer vulnerable using this website or another like it, there are several out there. Wait until you get a positive result and then change your password. You can read more about this everywhere on the internet, but here’s the Wiki on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heartbleed_bugOne last thing – don’t freak out over this and let it keep you off the internet. Most major sites have already corrected the problem and you can use the above website to check on sites before using them for a while. Stick to best practices on the internet and you’ll be OK. That includes changing your passwords on a regular basis. Remember, this isn’t the first security bug ever found and it won’t be the last. This is just one of the battles, the war rages on. Best Regards, Roger Sprague

Thanks, Ana. I read about this bug for only the first time yesterday. It's scary stuff. I spent half an hour today checking websites and changing passwords. Better safe than sorry.

This is the key sentence here... Before changing your password, check to make sure the site is no longer vulnerable using this website or another like it, there are several out there. Wait until you get a positive result and then change your password. If you just change a password without determining if a site is no longer vulnerable, you have just exposed THAT password to compromise. So check first...

YOu aren't inputting any info into the website Darleen. YOu simply put an url in there and it will tell you if it is patched or not.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention, BET. I could not get any info from the checker linked to in your post. I tried 2 different URLs - each one 3 times. One of those times I waited a full 5 minutes, and still no info at all. By going to the Wikipedia link and from there to PC Magazine, I got a link to Last Pass, where I got the information for all the URLs I entered. Jema
Wouldn't that jar your mustard!

I checked with Firefox the other day. They said there is no need to change passwords. Did you check this out Drac?

Where did you check, Bets, that said there is no need to change passwords? There is a definite need to FIRST CHECK with your institutions such as credit cards and banking and then change your password. I'm not a big fan a Steven J. Vaugan-Nichols, but his blog at ZDNet today was very informative and reinforces what Ana's husband has said. How to Protect Yourself in Heartbleed's Aftershocks

If you go to cnet.com they have a list of top 100 sites that have been checked for vulnerability. Also LastPass.com has a Heartbleed checker.
