...is on sale on Steam.

I have never played any of this series so this is a first for me. I'll probably have many questions when I get started. I know there are a lot of fans of this series out there.

I hope you have fun with it. I have played Might and Magic 4 and 5 (World of Xeen), and Might and Magic 6. I thought they were very enjoyable. I'll look forward to hearing what you think of Legacy. wave

I loved them all but especially MM7, and played it several times. I think I bought Legacy a while back. If it's anything like the earlier games it'll be blast, Rowan. They were great games. Lots of humour, decent "character" development, lots of freedom.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

I bought the deluxe edition of MMX and it included MM6. Does it matter which order I play the games?

RPGwatch has a rather informative review about the game, link:
http://www.rpgwatch.com/show/article?articleid=241

They like it very much, here a big chunk of the conclusion from the review:

Quote:
Overall, the game was fantastic, particularly for a budget title from a small developer. I had a blast playing the game and more than once found myself playing far longer than intended to do "just one more" map or quest. Limbic clearly has a passion for, and a deep understanding of, the factors that made the Might and Magic games classics. Throughout the development process, they listened to their core audience and actually made changes requested by the community. The game was released with no major bugs at all and even the trivial ones were promptly cleaned up via patch........ The game plays like a M&M game, with modern graphics and modern game mechanics (do we really pine for the days of needing graph paper to map, or even the days when there were in-game maps but they couldn't be annotated?). In a big callback to an easter egg from an earlier M&M game, there's a bonus dungeon that mimics the developer's offices.

And a quote about the riddles and puzzles:

Quote:
There's puzzles and riddles. There's a variety of monsters to kill and a varied world to kill them in. While the world isn't MM6-huge (very few games are, after all), it never feels small. There's character development out the wazoo. Simply put, Might and Magic Ten: Legacy can wear the Might and Magic mantle with pride, unlike that game released after MM8 which won't be named in polite company. Limbic got it right, folks. It's just plain fun to play. If you enjoyed the M&M series or the Wizardry series back in the day, quit dithering and buy the game. Trust me on this one.

A quote about if you need to have played the other MM games:

Quote:
There's no requirement to have previous experience with the M&M franchise. While I do think old farts such as yours truly will have a greater appreciation for the game and be able to glory in a heaping helping of nostalgia while playing, there's plenty for newcomers to like. The game stands up well on its own merits.

I've started Legacy. I'm enjoying it but am still at the point where I am getting used to the controls. I hope I made a strong enough party. I have a tank, another almost tank, an archer mage combo, and I'm a human with a little bit of everything.

I usually have a cleric type who can wield a mace to Mastery or GM (cant remember if GM is possible). Clerics and mages have quite different specializations and the GM spells for each are amazing, depending on which path you take.

Actually, I might start up a game, since the new Thief is meh and I'm still stuck in Witcher.

I've got a Barbarian orc with a two-handed mace, a Druid elf with a bow, a Defender dwarf a sword and shield, and I'm a Mercenary human with a bow and sword. All of us except the barbarian have at least one spell to fall back on. So far I'm surviving, sometimes barely.

Sounds like fun, Rowan. Keep us posted about your progress. "Barely surviving" describes me very well in most RPGs. lol

Argh. Again with the problems. For some reason I can't log in to Ubisoft/Uplay. It keeps telling me my internet connection doesn't work.

Hagatha, did you contact Ubisoft support? A quick google turned up several threads of others with problems (though they were using PS4).

L4L, I have tried getting help, but it looks as though these pleas for help largely get ignored.

Interestingly, my keyboard would barely work while I was just on the Uplay website. I had to literally punch down on the keys to have letters show up in my post. And I uninstalled Uplay, thinking perhaps a new install would help, but now I can't download it. It's as if the download link doesn't register that I am clicking on it.

I am seriously ticked off. This was supposed to be my day for gaming, and it's already 3 o'clock. Just fed up.

Hagatha, that is too irritating for words. Do you want to post in Glitches just to see if the techie folks there can help.

That's strange, hagatha. I have had that (not with this game) where I get a message of no connection even though I am connected. I found that the next day something has reset itself and it fixed itself over night. You probably didn't want to hear this. smashpc

It happened a couple of times on Steam.

Sigh. tired

It's been a rough day. smashpc

BUT I now have a fully functional computer WITH Uplay working and I've got a game of MMX Legacy started. It's a bit different from the later MM games, which had a bit more freedom of movement. This game is strictly played on squares. Still, as long as it has those flashes of trademark silly humour and all the loot and other stuff, it should be fun. So far I have cleaned out the Spiders and am headed for the lighthouse.

It's because they went back to the Might and Magic 4 feel of grid movement, instead of keeping the freedom movement from the later games.

Not so difficult but feels a bit unnatural. You get used to it.

Hagatha, I just finished the lighthouse quest last night and the boss fight is difficult. Do as many of the other quests first if you can. And go on a shopping spree for health and mana potions before the last floor of the lighthouse. My barbarian survived with just one single point left on his health bar. eek

L4L, in the end it was a system restore. I had everything working except Internet Explorer. Oddly enough, I could still access Steam, Uplay and my email. And obviously the malware had been removed since there were no more popups forcing their way to the fore. I might have been able to work out the IE problem. But I'd had enough, so I just restored my system, re-downloaded stuff, and got on with it.

Rowan, I just realized that I need to get some food before I venture into the lighthouse, so I'll head back to town, go shopping, and come back out.

Have you found any low-level trainers yet?

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Hagatha, you need food from the inn so you can sleep outside of town. Sleep doesn't work if you have no food. Get lots of health and mana potions for mid fight sustenance. I found that I had to limp out of the lighthouse after each level to restock.

Yes, there are some trainers here: Trainers

I also worked out how to level up my characters. Now what I have left is a couple of boss fights, the two Sirens, and a Cyclops. I hope there are random encounters for experience points. Anyway, my party is finally equipped well enough to get by.

Now, in other MM games, you could collect a LOT of food, so you could go for many days without having to return to civilization. You could also find food while out adventuring. I hope there's an opportunity to increase number of food units carried, or at least the opportunity to find food out in the wild. Actually, if I remember correctly different inns sold different amounts of food, so that may happen here, too.

So far, pretty enjoyable, though. I always did like MM games.

I still have do the two dangerous caves and the crypt in the area outside of Sorpigal. That's where the sirens, Cyclops, and dragon are. So far these are tough. I found a relic.

In Sorpigal you can buy only 6 foods and I haven't found any in the wild.

Hagatha, have you figured out how to cross the rivers? It says you need a blessing or something from someone first, but that doesn't help me.

The road to Seahaven is blocked.

When you leave Castle Porymeyron, You go west to the river and then a couple of squares north and you'll find a bridge. Cross the bridge and Seahaven is to the north.

You can also get a lot of information for the game at The gamepressure site

Later on you're going to run into a quest
Click to reveal..
where you have to fight a crystal spider which is one of the roughest fights of the game (in my opinion)

There is a really good cheat for this game which I had to use for the above fight. If you're into cheats information on how to open it can be found here.

Hi oldman smile

I visited the site you gave the link for and can see how to open the console - but I can't find any actual cheat codes - there or anywhere else woozy
By cheat codes, I mean stuff like "open the console and type GOD" etc.

And I apologise in advance if the codes are right under my nose and I'm not seeing them but would definitely appreciate your help redface

Cheers.

Mad you have to open your M&MX folder in your my documents. There you have to create a file called "global3.lsg". Once that is created then while in game just hit Ctrl+Alt+C and the console will pop up. After that it is pretty self explanatory. Although there is no God Mode, during combat you can click on "reset condition" which will keep you healthy You can also add potions to keep you in health and mana.

I didn't know how to create a file myself but fortunately there was a file already named global2.lsg and I just copied it and renamed it. If you have problems getting the file created, email me and I'll send you one.

Hope this helps.

My game hasn't arrived yet (I ordered a boxed edition) but as I've never played a "grid" style RPG before, I'm amassing as much help as I can in advance - to be ready - because I'm sure I'll need plenty !! eek

Anyway, I'm very grateful you have been able to help, even at this stage in my proceedings, and I've copied and saved all the info you've provided so far praise

Cheers.

Mad thanks

Mad, the grid style is easy enough to get used to, and it's quite effective with the decent graphics in the game. You basically have forward, backward and side to side movement, and you can turn around, but you have no diagonals. In the end, it is simplicity itself to work with.

The last grid-based game I played was the Legend of Grimrock, and it was really fun, if you want to check out another one.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Thank you, hagatha smile

I'm playing Broken Sword 5 at the moment but could very well start M&M after I'm finished with that.

I do enjoy RPGs but I'm a real fighting "wimp" !!
So it's always been fantastic to know I can dash here to Gameboomers and beg for help when I need some - and I have no doubt I will again with M&M Legacy !! lol

The fighting in MM is pretty simple; it's turn-based, and you just tell the computer which action you want for each character in turn, be it a spell, a bow shot, a sword slash, or drinking a potion. Or even using a turn to back away. There is no gyrating and hacking and dodging (well, there is dodging, but it is a passive skill that always applies to characters who have the trait).

Thanks, oldman, I wasn't able to cross the bridge because a guard blocked my way. He's gone now. I had to finish the castle quest before this was possible. I've reached Seahaven and am just exploring the town collecting quests and training where possible.

I'll have to come back for those dangerous caves mentioned earlier. My party is not strong enough yet. I don't like leaving an area incomplete in case I forget to do the unfinished business.

Hagatha, where are you?

I'm completely stuck. I have no way out of this area, and I can't gain any more experience.

What castle quest are you referring to? I have no castle quest listed anywhere.

I've completed the Lighthouse, and the Spiders, but I can't find any new areas to go to, other than the ones I can't do, like the Cyclops and the Dragon. I simply cannot find any other areas to go to.

EDIT: You know I'm wondering if my game is bugged. I am supposed to talk to Rosalie in the Temple but there is no Rosalie in the temple. She is supposed to come with my party to do the Thief quest. But since she doesn't exist....?

Hagatha you get the Castle quest the same place you got the spider quest. it's called the Rocky way to Portmeyron.

As far as Rosalie is concerned, when you go to the temple you have two icons at the top of the screen. One is Rosalie you have to click on her to talk to her.

Where do I get the Portmeyron Quest? I don't have it.

EDIT:

I'm starting again. Something is wrong.

It is the same place that you got the spider quest. When you first come to town from the ship, it's the first building on the right.

Hagatha, what oldman said. Check the icons at the top for multiple people at a location. I didn't catch on to that at the beginning either. Also check to see if she is not already a companion. Took me a while to figure out where they were also (at the bottom flanking your party).

But, I've been in the Garrison several times, and the only person there is the Orc. I've re-done the Thieves, and that worked out, but I have been in every building in town and I get no Castle quest.

I just think something must be wrong. Is there an order to do the quests? I've done the Spiders, and I have Lost Lambs, I have the Bestiary, I have the Lighthouse, but no Castle Quest, no Portmeyron quest. I just went back to the Garrison to see if I missed anyone, but no, there is only the Orc, and he is not handing out any more quests.

I think you have to finish both the lighthouse and the highwaymen quests. You get the Highwaymen quest from Rosalie at the temple. When Both are done Maximus will give you the Portmeyron quest.

Mad, you may like the turn based fighting style as you can take our sweet time assigning moves to each party member.

Okay, got it. Not sure why, but the first time through I didn't get the castle quest after I completed the Lighthouse. Anyway, it's all moving forward now.

Okay, I have completed the Lighthouse, Thieves and Castle quest, but the Bridge to Seahaven is still blocked. Now what do I have to do?

Edit: Okay, figured it out.

So, my thoughts on this game are that it's a lot of fun, but I still prefer VI and VII by a long shot. This is like a mini-version of those games, with tiny, cramped little areas instead of the massive game locales and endless quests. In the previous games you really got the sense that you were travelling for ages (partly, duh, because you were). Some of the quests took you all over the map and took ages to finish. And I get the feeling that this game will be relatively short in comparison. Also, the silly humour is missing.

Rowan, if you like this game you would probably love MM VII. Which I might have to load up again soon...

Edit again: Well, I have to say that this game is starting to get up my nose. There is no way to flee combat, which is quite the egregious mistake, I think. In the original game you could move around in combat, too, which was great for combat strategy. Here, you're just glued in place, able to spin around, but nothing else.

I just got stuck in a "combat" situation in which there were no enemies, just the combat music. With no way to move away from the alleged combat, the game was effectively stuck and I lost my last two very difficult kills.
