Hi all, a couple of questions. 1. Does anyone here have any experience with the K-Meleon browser? If so, have you had any problems, especially with loading websites? 2. Is there a good version of Firefox prior to Google becoming involved with it that can be downloaded and that is still supported?  Jema

Hi Jema 1. I do not have any experience with the K-Meleon browser. 2. As far as I know Google does not own Firefox, the Mozilla Corporation does. link: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/foundation/moco/ and also this: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2522447As for Google's involvement in Firefox, an explanation can be found here: Mozilla Firefox is Open Source. Which means every line of code is documented and available online for inspection. The process of writing and editing that code also happens in the open using a service called Bugzilla. There you can see who is working on which parts of code. Any line of code that actually ends up in Firefox has to be tested and approved by project manager who has been chosen because of his long-time contributions to the project. This process means that Firefox development is sometimes incredibly slow and incredibly bureaucratic. But it also means that any change can be reversed and the trail of decisions leading up to that change are part of the public record. Google has been the primary funder/partner for Mozilla for many years now. Why would they do that? Because this cash buys them the top spot in the Firefox search bar, anything typed into the urlbar which is not a specific web address is routed to Google, and the Firefox Home / Start page uses Google as it's default search bar. All of this results directly in Google ad revenue. (source: comment in the link provided above) And to be absolutely clear, moderator James has this to say: Mozilla has been developing the browser you know as Firefox ever since it was called Phoenix 0.1 way back in September 2002. Google released the initial version of Chrome on September 2, 2008. The only real thing Google contributes to Mozilla is paying for the rights to have Google be the default search engine in search bar and start page on Firefox. Mozilla of course owns Mozilla. There is the Mozilla Foundation and the subsidiary organization, the Mozilla Corporation. And let me, at my own accord, add this: 3. Google have their own browser, named Google Chrome. There are also a browser out there called Opera, it is also very nice way to search the internet.

Great info, Karsten. I know the only vestige of Google remaining in Firefox is the top slot in the search engine options. I think traveler is using a different search engine which is not supposed to track you. Jenny100 mentioned that it is not nearly as good, but may be worth it to some. But I don't remember the name of it.
EDIT: Just looked it up - Duck,Duck, Go. At least I THINK that's the one she's trying.

Yep, it's DuckDuckGo. I don't know why it wouldn't be as "good" as Google. It's doing just fine for me anyway. Gil.

I wish I could remember what Jenny said about it... but that would require my rememberer to be work! EDIT: Found it... I think it's true, but their search feature misses things that
Google finds. Not that Google is as good as it used to be
searchwise because it isn't.

It would be nice if that's what Private Browsing did! Unfortunately, all it does it not save any information about your browsing to your computer. Read more here. Important: Private Browsing doesn't make you anonymous on the Internet. Your Internet service provider, employer, or the sites themselves can still track what pages you visit. Private Browsing also doesn't protect you from keyloggers or spyware that may be installed on your computer. Add-ons like Do Not Track Me from Abine do some good at stopping sites from tracking you, but they are far from foolproof too. If a company wants to track you, they will find a way.

Thanks everyone for your input. Something new: Before I "upgraded" to IE8 and installed the 04/08 updates to XP and IE8, I could connect to DuckDuckGo. I just clicked on the link in traveler's post and got the same cr*ppy message that I asked about in my thread "IE8 and Windows XP." @#$%^&*!!! Jema

Did any of the suggestions in the link I posted in your other thread help? I'm stumped because IE 8 is working just fine on my XP.
