I upgraded to IE8 a few weeks ago. I didn't know at the time that support for it would also stop at the same time it did for Windows XP. I downloaded and installed the 04/08/14 updates to XP and IE8. I don't know whether the problem I'm having started with the installation of IE8 or after the update.

I cannot connect to any Microsoft secure (https) website. I get the message, "There is a problem with this website's security certificate." And the advice to close the page without connecting. It gives me the option to connect anyhow but, when I click on it, I get the message, "Internet Explorer cannot download this page."

Until yesterday I thought it was a problem with only MS secure sites because all other https sites I had tried to connect to worked just fine. Then yesterday I was searching the Internet for information on some of the alternative browsers and tried to connect to 2 https sites related to 2 of them - with the same results.

I have disabled everything I can find pertaining to security certificates in IE8's security settings and also the SmartScreen Filter, but to no avail.

Is there some setting I need to change, or do you think this is MS's parting gift to those of us still using XP?

HI smile

I just tried to go to the download center for Microsoft; there was no problem with this, this is the webpage, I found for it:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/internet-explorer-8-details.aspx
As you can see, all seems to be fine. However, I've not downloaded IE8 as I have windows 7 and IE 11 (I think?)

On the webpage, you can click on the icon for Method A: reset windows securitu settings back to the defaults. And then please follow the on screen instructions. (you'll need to click on the + icon in the round circle).

Instead of using Internet Explorer, you can use Firefox (from Mozilla) or Google Chrome. I use Firefox as my way to go the on the internet; it is a very nice browser smile And. imo, far better than IE8 or IE 10 or IE 11. Since you can't go to any of the https sites now, it seems that IE8 blocks your way to these. (At least that is my best qualified guess).

Also, have you tried to uninstall IE8 (can be done from the control panel or via system restore in XP)? If not, please try a system restore.

Jema, let me fire up my XP with IE 8. I never use IE 8 as I use Firefox, but I'll see what happens. I've taken my XP computer off the internet, but will chance a quick visit to the Microsoft secure website.

EDIT: I just went to half a dozen https websites with no problems at all using IE8 on my XP computer.

Does anything here help? Certificate Errors

And, yes, Karsten, you will have IE 11 on Windows 7. It shipped with IE 9 and has been updated to IE 11. Considering that I don't use IE unless I have to, I do like IE 11.

Karsten and Draclvr, thanks for your replies.

Draclvr, I clicked on the link you gave and skimmed over its contents - some of it looks promising. Tomorrow I shall read it more thoroughly.

One thought, Draclvr. I read in some of your other posts that you took XP off the Internet several months ago. Does that mean you did not install the 04/08 updates? If so, maybe they're the cause of my problem.

I accessed the internet to grab those updates - less the one that installs the nag message that XP support has ended - and took it off immediately after. It was like when I accessed it to check out my IE 8 to see if I was having any problems with it like you are. I then took it off right after.

Although I have a complete backup of the drive, I just have too much stuff on it that I don't want to chance losing and then having to rebuild the drive again.

Have you tried downloading and using another browser to see if you get the same behavior?

There is a "root certificates" update that sometimes appears as an "optional" Windows Update, but not as a critical one. If you're still able to run Windows Update manually, check in the Optional updates and see if the root certificates update is there.

I've installed all the latest updates as well, and no issues here. Have you tried resetting IE to it default security settings?

Drac, Jenny, and Inland - thanks so much for your input.

Drac, the part of the information at the forum your link connected me to that I thought looked promising turned out to be for IE7 WinXP SP2. So I went to the other suggestions.

The only one, and Inland has also suggested it above, that I've had any success with was restoring IE's security settings to the defaults.

I've spent most of today messing with that. I restored the default settings to the Internet Zone, rebooted, and tried microsoft.com's https site. I got the security certificate warning page but this time, when I clicked on continue anyhow, it did. It displayed a partial page and gave me the option to "display the protected content". I clicked on that and there was the whole page in all its glory! But with the certificage warning in a red line at the top.

I found that as long as I stayed connected to the Internet, I could accesss the site without having to repeat the 1st 3 steps.

I then restored the default settings to the Trusted Sites Zone and added Microsoft to the list of sites, but it won't let me connect to the site from that zone.

I have restored my custom settings in the Internet Zone. I use that zone to surf and I will not allow just any site I happen to visit to download ActiveX controls or use active scripting.

Jenny, I am going to try and find the certificate update you mentioned and install it. After that, I'm through with this.

Inland and Drac, I was in the process of finding an alternative browser when I got sidetracked by this. Tomorrow I'll get back to it.

I apologize for the length of this post.

Thank all of you again for your help.

Well, it sounds like you've made progress anyway. Hope it gets sorted out once and for all soon.

I restored the Internet Zone to its default settings once again, rebooted, did a search, and found the latest version of the root certificates update (March 2014) on MS download.com.

When I tried to download the file, I wound up being told that my security settings would not allow the file to be downloaded.

I lowered the security settings one notch below the default, enabled cookies, rebooted, and tried again - with the same results.

Do any of you know what other security setting IE requires for me to download this file?

This sounds like a problem I had when working with Windows Server and using IE. By default it was set to prevent all downloads (though with Windows Server it let Windows Update through).

Check the instructions here -- especially #2 and #3.
https://hdc.tamu.edu/Academics/eLearning/Change_IE_Security_Settings_to_Enable_File_Downloads.php

There is a setting for enabling and disabling file downloads that may be set to "disable."

Can you post a link to that site? The only HTTPS sites, so far I can see, are those that require a login. The download links I see are all HTTP (unsecured).

Hi Jenny,

"Files download" was already enabled under the default settings. I enabled "Automatic prompting for files download" and rebooted. Tried to download the file - with the same results. cry

Hi Inland,

Not being able to connect to any Microsoft https site was something I discovered when I was searching the Internet on various options in IE8. Whether or not any of them required a login, I don't know since I couldn't connect to any of them.

The URL I used to test my progress in trying to resolve the https connection problem was https://www.microsoft.com. Whether or not it requires a login, I didn't notice because I was only interested in being able to connect - not what the site was about.

I don't have a problem connecting to the http sites.

I just clicked on your link on my XP computer using IE 8 and it went right there.

Does anything in this Microsoft link help?

You cannot log in to or connect to secured sites in IE 8

Hi All, an update with good and bad news.

Thanks for the link, Draclvr. I had already tried about half of the suggestions. As it turns out, I didn't have to try the other half. grin

I used System Restore to roll my system back to a time prior to installing the 04/08/14 updates. (I'll talk about my reason for doing that in a separate thread.)

I then went to the MS download center, tried again to download the roots certificates update, and this time IE let me! The only difference between this time and the other times I tried is this time was prior to installing the 04/08 updates.

I installed the roots certificate update and now there are no more security certificate warnings when I connect to the secure sites!

So now, all of the problems I asked about in this thread have been resolved - that's the good news.

Thanks very much everyone for all your help.

The bad news: As a result of something I tried when trying to get the root certificates update, I now have 2 new, more serious problems, which I shall ask for your help on in a separate thread.
