Tex Murphy fans can get their fix in 14 hours from Steam hereor GoG here.

Quote:
Updated 5/9 Greetings Mutant League!
TEX IS BACK! For two days now, can you believe it? By now, you should have received your Steam code for Tesla Effect.
There has been a lot of hubbub about the GOG codes, so let’s clear that up.
We had requested GOG codes for our Kickstarter backers early on. However, by the night the game was supposed to launch, we had not received them yet. It was a choice of whether we wanted to make the backers wait for the GOG codes, or simply send everyone a Steam code to access “Tesla Effect.” Since we wanted you guys to be able to play the game the first day it came out, we opted to send everyone the Steam code. However, the good news is by Thursday we received GOG codes. We are currently sending out emails with GOG codes to members of the Mutant League. It will be about 24 hours before all the emails have been sent out, so remember to check your inbox (and your spambox!)
People who are at the Beta Level Testing and above tier already have the game on GOG so will not be receiving new codes. The Beta on GOG can be updated to the full edition of the game. For instructions on how to "refresh your shelf" on GOG, please visit: https://secure.gog.com/account/refresh
We respectfully ask that you don’t share the codes with people, and continue to enjoy "Tesla Effect." Have a great weekend!
Best,
Chris

Great news, Ana. And hopefully the GOG download will be available at approximately the same time. thumbsup

Well I just got an email from BFG and they gave me the download code to unlock the game on steam. However, when I go to steam there is no option to enter the code only to buy the game. Maybe tomorrow they will have opened an option to enter the download code.

I was just so excited I thought I could download the game and have it done even if they didn't unlock it until tomorrow. Plus the Big finish site says it will be available on GOG as well but I only got a steam code. I'd prefer GOG but whatever, I just want the game.

I sent BFG an email asking them what was going on so maybe I'll get an answer by the time the game is unlocked.

To use a product code at steam:
- Open steam and log in.
- At top left, click on "games".
- select from the drop down menu.
- enter your code.

Thank you so much MaG. You can teach an old dog new tricks. I activated the game and got the message that it wasn't released yet but it is now in my library and as soon as it is available I'll be able to download it.

I think if you get the game from steam you have to be connect to the internet to play the game am I right or not. Will wait for GOG to have it.

Richard, my understanding is that there is an option to play a game in "offline mode" on Steam after you have purchased and activated the game. There are instructions on the Steam website on how to do this. wave

It still says - Tesla Effect is coming soon, I bought it directly from Steam, then patience is required oops

Earlier the Steam page said "coming in about 1 hour", now it is still in pre-purchase and says nothing about when it is coming think

1:50 ET, it is downloading now bravo

I guess we are all waiting "impatiently" for GOG to provide the download. It's 2:30 PM here in NY, and as yet it's a "no go" Patience, patience, patience.

Update from BigFinish for Kickstarter backers:

Quote:
Ok folks, here is an UPDATE! Steam keys are on their way to the thousands of backers who were eligible for a download of the game. WE are working VERY hard to deliver all of these, so please be patient. We only very recently received the list of keys and our own email servers are distributing the emails to all the users. Thousands have already made it through, and thousands more are coming VERY soon! IMPORTANT: THIS GAME IS DRM FREE! When you upload a product to Steam, there is an option to select whether or not you want that game to use DRM, which we have NOT selected, which means you ONLY use Steam to Download the game. After which point THE GAME IS YOURS. If you don't like Steam you can close Steam, delete Steam, do whatever you want with Steam after you have downloaded Tesla Effect. I reiterate: THIS GAME IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE DRM FREE!

That worked.
Strange that Tesla Effect was the only game that was affected.

I am highly PO'd and I just told emailed Big Finish to let them know exactly how I feel.
This is the LAST time I ever back anything on Kickstarter or trust any developer to keep his word.
I pledged way too much to be tossed a Steam key and told that it is free of DRM when I consider the Steam client you have to use to download the game DRM and I am not alone in this.

If I am not sent a code to redeem on GOG, Big Finish can !@#*! well keep the game.

Gil.

In the GOG my games area, it states:

+1 DLC

Can I assume this is embedded in the game?

I don't have steam open on my pc but every time I start the game steam starts to.
I guess I have to have steam running to play Tesla Effect. So it's a online game.

RevCo, it says that in my games area, too - I'm going to assume it's included in the game unless I hear otherwise; if I do, I will post a note here about it.

Gil, I hope that Big Finish gives you a GOG code. I think it's nice that you can download the game with the Steam client and can then delete it and still play the game. However, I do understand that there are those who never want the Steam client on their computer at all.

Richard, here is the page about offline mode with Steam:

Hi, Marian!

I pre-ordered the game last month from GOG, so I'm currently downloading it now. It's taking forever, but I've been waiting almost 20 years, so I guess another hour or so won't matter lol ! Now I just have to decide which other game I want for my freebee.

I would have done better not to support the making of Tesla Effect at all.
Backers should have received their codes for the game, Steam or not, before anyone else could buy it.
If I had not supported the game, I could already be playing it for much less than I pledged.
Well, I certainly learned my lesson.

Susan, yes, this is going to be a loooong download, but I feel confident that it will be worth it. My connection is far from the speediest and unless it was for Gabriel Knight, Tex Murphy, or Nancy Drew, I probably wouldn't even attempt it. grin

Have fun choosing your free game. wave

It's going to take several hours for me to download.
I probably won't finish today.
It will probably take quite a while to install too.

I've got mine downloading. I never thought I'd get to play another Tex Murphy game. This is sooooo wonderful! It will be tomorrow before it's all downloaded, but what are you gonna do? My ISP is terribly slow.

I had the same problem with GOG not showing that it was ready to download, Marian. I took your advise and went to Support, then "solutions", clicked on the game on the support page, and it worked and is downloading at this very moment. WOW! 15.5 GB. That's the LARGEST file I have EVER downloaded. Thanks for your tip that got me to this point.

I hope you get a GOG code for the game soon, Traveler.
It's kind of deceptive on the ***Kickstarter page*** that they mention downloads of the older games from GOG as rewards for different tiers, but not of the new one.

Seems to be a difference of opinion on whether GOG keys will be sent

I'm very happy to hear that my suggestion worked for you, Sandy. smile

Have fun, Debra. Maybe one of us can sit here and write the Great American Novel while it downloads....then again, maybe not. grin

Richard, click on the GOG link that I posted and then look down towards the middle of the page on the left; you will see where it says "Solution," and then click on the link below that. wave

I got my key yesterday for backing the Kickstarter but they are sending them out as quickly as they can if you haven't received them yet.

Just downloaded the game from stm. when I play the game the movement isn't smooth. When I move the curser from left to right it isn't smooth. Just put in a new video card. Ovet three hundred dollard should be a good one. Power supply is 875. Would the one from GOG be better.

I wouldn't think that whether you got the game from GOG or from Steam would make a difference (unless the Steam client affects game performance, and as far as I know, it does not). Why don't you ask over in Glitches? Maybe someone over there can give you some advice, Richard.

I doubt it would make a difference, the requirements are the same.

Well I certainly don't think the Steam version is DRM free...it can't be. I used my backer key and the download was only about 10MB's not the 13 GB's that I though the game was. Didn't take but 15 minutes to download. I can start the game but its through Steam. Can't find it anywhere on my computer either so I am guessing it can't be played without Steam. May be wrong but I see no way to burn my own disk if I can't find it...LOL

I can't speak to that Grey. My GOG version has twelve files with 2-12 being 1.5 gigs each. It is taking me fifteen minutes per 1.5 gig file to download. The good news is there are only two to go.

Did you buy the GOG version or use a backer key?

greyfuss,

the download is 16gb, download again.

the game is DRM free as when developers put games on steam they select their security options & big finish didn't select DRM.

the game can be downloaded & then you can uninstall the steam software if you feel like it. You can even just copy the folder from the steam apps/common folder & install on another machine without requiring steam.

if any backers here are wondering why they didn't get GOG codes its because GOG couldn't supply them to big finish so they received them all from steam. Big finish wanted the backers all to have their keys at release time so the couldn't wait for GOG to find the time.

I will try that Plumgas, thanks. Wonder why I can still start the game though?

Well, Tesla Effect is already in my Steam Library and shows that I have played it for a minute and I see no way to redownload the game. Too bad. I sure hope my boxed copy doesn't have DRM when it comes.

check out your folders in steam apps/ common/tesla effect it should about 16gb. if it only showing a small file it didn't download right.
Just uninstall the game & then redownload it.

IN reference to DRM....read big finish games statement

It is absolutely amazing that another Tex Murphy game is now available!

Seeing the game's intro brings a flood of gaming memories from more than a decade ago. So few games with such a history can be said about this.

Looking forward to playing the game.

Oh, really?

JudasIscariot, the GOG forum liason, wrote this 15 hours ago:

"Just a quick FYI:

"GOG keys have been sent out to Atlus/Big Finish and we hope that all the backers will be seeing them ASAP. Please keep in mind that there is a huge difference in time zones and that's why it looks like the GOG keys were delayed :)"

Seems GOG could find the time after all.
Whatever happened, it wasn't on GOG's end.

Gil.

My Telsa Effect project is almost done. Soon I get to play the game

Step one--------Download twelve files from GOG=Three hours. During which I mowed my third of an acre lawn and ate dinner.
Step two--------Watch the intro and make a save. Opening graphics are great.
Step three------Find where they hid the bloody saves.

Public Service announcement to hopefully prevent Boomers from pulling out their hair. Save location is at,
C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Local Settings\Big Finish Games\Telsa Effect\ Game player name.

Note it is not under my documents but the folder above named local settings

Step Four------Copy to backup external drive====almost ten minutes
Step Five------Burn to two double layer DVD's as 8X burning speed= nearly an hour.

Almost forgot the fifteen minute install time.

At last I know where the saves are: got the lawn mowed: ate dinner: backed up to external drive and disc: and now just maybe I can play the game.

Yep there it is in the Steam App file and over 16GB just like you said Plumgas, thank you very much. However I have copied that whole file to a flash drive and installed it on another computer and it won't run. This isn't the Forum to discuss this issue so I will leave it here. I have no problem playing it with Steam and I know I will have a DRM free disk once my Boxed Edition arrives. Thanks for being a great Tex Murphy fan for all these years.

One reviewer said it took him 16 hours to play through the game, so take heart. There are also some different paths you can take through the game, I believe, and a few different endings, so it sounds like there is replay value as well. wave

Hi Richard,
First go to the link that Marian has provided to us (on Page 2 of this thread) Click on that link, and you will see a page about SUPPORT for this game. On the left, you will see the word "solution". Under this word you will see a LINK. Click on that link, and you will now have access to the game download. It took about one and three quarter hours to complete the download (using the GOG Downloader). The installation took over an hour.
I am now playing the game. All I (we) need now is a "You know what" from Mag. Is this a HINT? Of COURSE it is. LOL Enjoy!
Sandy

Would you guys believe I am still downloading the game? My ISP is extremely slow and to top it off, the service went down for 4 hours. I have 3 GB left to go. My fingers are crossed. I hope the files didn't get corrupted in the downloading snafu.

Hi, fellow "TEX" players,
In my case, I didn't have enough room on my hard drive for this game, but fortunately I have an EXTERNAL Hard Drive, so there it went. I'm playing it now. The movements and the audio are a little "choppy, but I realize that the game requires a LOT of resources, but I can live with that UNTIL I get another computer. I'm playing it on my "ancient" WIN XP machine, and I'm happy to have it "work" at ALL. Enjoy the game, everybody.

A lot of us haven't been able to get the game on GOG because we don't have activation keys for that website....only for Steam. The ones that are able to get GOG keys had the beta version of the game and it transferred over to the GOG free download. We're hoping that we'll get GOG keys. The latest news is from the backers' forum: "According to GOG they sent out codes for those who weren't part of the beta yesterday to publisher ATLUS. But at one point BFG mentioned "no plans for delivering GOG codes" so thats why people are anxiously waiting on further word from BFG. Here's hoping it all gets resolved soon! ATLUS needs to pick up the slack, it seems GOG has already completed their end (converting beta accounts to retail and sending codes out to the publisher). It just requires ATLUS to distribute the codes now or BFG to get in touch with ATLUS to pass the codes onto the backers."

I feel your pain. My download took 7 hours and when it was done, I was missing a .bin file - I managed to download that separately, though (another 20 minutes), and the game then installed successfully. Fingers crossed that you won't have to start over again. wave

Hi, Marian!

My download also took 7 hours, and the only other game I would do that for is a new Gabriel Knight lol ! I have one casual game left to finish, so I'll probably start playing "Tesla Effect" on the weekend.

I'll see you in the "Hints" section grin !

Melia,

I'll bet you didn't get that info from a representative of Big Finish Games.
The last time I went to the backers' forum an hour or so ago, Big Finish had yet to say one word about their broken promise to supply an alternate to Steam.
They were not talking; they were simply ignoring angry, unhappy backers. though they said they would offer that alternative, not once, but several times.

If backers are comfortable with Steam and don't mind using it, fine.
Some seem to be so desperate to play Tesla Effect that they'll use the Steam portal, happy about it or not.
But Big Finish's attitude so far toward those of us who refuse to use Steam seems to be pretty much that of one forum member who said that if we didn't like it, "Tough (bleep)".

We also paid for the game to be made when Big Finish came begging on Kickstarter.
We'd never have done it if downloading from Steam was mandatory.
Yet now, we're being treated like unreasonable jerks for having no intention of asking plaintively, "How high?" when told we have to jump through Steam's hoops to get near this game.

Big Finish managed to find out what size T-shirts upper tiers wanted or what color their fedoras should be.
They asked how names should be listed in the credits and that had to happen well before the game was released.
But they couldn't ask which code individual backers wanted...put a check mark beside GOG, Humble Bundle, Steam or Whoever... and arrange for them before releasing the game to everyone?

If I could scrub my name off the backers who are credited with helping fund the game, I would.
I've given my "DRM free" Steam key away to a very nice guy on the GOG forum who loves GOG but "doesn't mind" Steam.
Well, at least he's happy.
I sure as the devil am not.

I, too, was sent a "Steam" download code, so I emailed Big Finish Games - and granted I did get an immediate reply.
BUT despite more emails sent and answered it is very evident that I am NOT going to be sent a code I can use at Gog.

This was the latest reply I received :
_________________________________________________________________________________________

While many people like and use Steam, we understand that some would prefer to use other game portals like GOG.
But I do not have any GOG codes to distribute, and I’m not aware of any plans to distribute GOG codes in the future.
This isn’t a reflection on GOG.
The game is DRM free. Once downloaded, Steam is no longer required. Steam does not need to be running or even installed to play the game.
_________________________________________________________________________________________

So. It's Steam or nothin' !! Which I find very disappointing duh

I'm as frustrated as all of you, too. I sent a couple of emails to Steve at the BFG forum. One reply was that they want to use Steam. No mention of our preferences. All of my Tex games are on GoG and I prefer them.

It appears that buying a pre-order from GOG rather than pledging at Kickstarter, which I almost did, was the right thing to do.

After reading GOG sent keys to the company it creates a public relations problem that magnifies having unintended consequences. Not only does Big Finish suffer a backlash from customers but people will think twice about promises made when developers go to Kickstarter hat in hand.

I was expecting a GOG KEY from the Kickstarter funding of Dreamfall. When they requested backing one of their stated sites was GOG. I assumed if that is the case I'd be able to obtain the game at GOG. I found out that may not happen. It was reenforced one assumes nothing.

During my e-mail exchange with Humble over not getting my download e-mail authorization for the Blackwell game, it took forty-eight hours of repeated e-mails and replies I finally got a key. The problem was I received a Steam Key for The Longest Journey, Dreamfall Chapters, to be released in the future, not the Blackwell.

Humble to their credit finally provided a Steam Key and DRM free Blackwell Download. Steam's key could be ignored at Humble. When asked about the Longest Journey I was advised it will work the same way as Blackwell. They are or will be the distributor of Dreamfall Chapters. That was the first I heard about that. Don't count on getting a GOG Key for that game either, though they will be likely selling the game.

What does all this teach me? Don't back any game presented to you at Kickstarter. Fortunately, Humble is doing it right. You can either DL the game DRM free from them or use the Steam Key. At least you have a choice.

If I accept what is written here, the folks at Big Finish are not following through with promises made when they asked for gamers support. Leading me back to an unwillingness to jump in when Kickstarter presents a pledge week. Because of this Kickstarter in their own best interest should apply some pressure insisting BF provide those GOG Keys. By the time that happens it'll likely be too late.

Oldmariner, you said, "You can either DL the game DRM free from the (Humble) or use the Steam key." If I used the Steam key and went to Humble to get the game, would it be DRM free? (I'm almost ready to just buy the game from GOG.)

This may sound like heresy to Tex fans who've played every Tex Murphy game since the year one, but I get mad all over again every time I even look at Chris Jones now and I seriously doubt I'll get over that and buy the game 'again' from GOG.
If, by some miracle, Big Finish decides to honor their word to backers who don't use Steam and send me a useable code from an alternate site, I will inform them that I honored mine to Steve at Big Finish and gave the Steam key away so I can't accept it.
But I'm not holding my breath.

You can't get Tesla from Humble. My point was that Humble offered Steam Keys for Blackwell or you could download that game from their site. The choice was yours you did not have to deal with Steam if you do not wish to. They will be doing the same for Dreamfall for those who backed the game on Kickstarter. I illustrated that to point out how Telsa missed the boat that is what Big finish should have done.

Buying the game from GOG will effectively double your costs. I thought you could get a DRM free game from Steam. If the game is really DRM free what is the issue? Do you have to use their client or something?

oldmariner, the version from Steam is indeed DRM free, which was what they promised. You need to install Steam to get the game and then you can delete Steam. If you use ccleaner or anything like that it would remove it completely with no traces.

There is a video here with instructions.

You have to download the Steam client and agree to their TOS, old mariner, then you can download the game and they say you can dump the client afterward and never have to use it again.
Well, that's just ducky.
I am not about to be bullied into downloading a third party client in order to play a game I had already paid for and could get elsewhere if codes for alternate venues were provided "as promised".

You were right in your previous email.
This is horrible PR for both Big Finish Games and Kickstarter.

*EDIT* Ana I fully agree with you after following your link. Please understand KS backers have a legitimate complaint. Big Finish completely messed this up. Being forced to open an account with a third party when promised this is not a requirement will upset a lot of people.*
End of EDIT

I don't have a Steam account. I bought the game from Gog without any issues. I was asking after reading all the complaining by people who do not wish to deal with Steam. Accepting the Steam version is DRM free, it does not absolve Big Finish from their promise. It sounds like a public relations debacle by Big Finish. They clearly stated when asking for backing the game will be available at GOG and Steam. That implies you as a backer could get it at either place. Nowhere in their promotion did they say Gog was not an option for backers to use when downloading their promised game. I fully understand why people are angry.

To say you can uninstall the Steam client and that version is DRM free is all well and good. However, being forced to open a Steam account, download their client to obtain a game you bought under false pretenses may not satisfy many people. Big Finish created a major marketing blunder. It raises the question "Can I believe the next developer at Kickstarter when they make a promise." Rest assured those burned by Big Finish will be asking that. It certainly gives me pause when considering any support through Kickstarter if the developer can avoid delivering the game as advertised.

Humble on the other hand did it right with Blackwell. There you have a choice take the key or download the DRM free game bypassing Steam. Humble told me distribution will work the same way for Dreamfall. So as a Kickstarter supporter of Dreamfall I expect to receive a direct DL of a DRM free game. Yes, if that happened with Dreamfall I'd be complaining very loudly.

I'm in the same position as you traveler. And I also thought of giving away the Steam key, but I won't do that because it would mean yet more business for Steam. I'll never accept their TOS or register there, so I would be playing Tesla now if only I hadn't backed the game. Indeed if BFG would handout the gog codes (that have been sent to them) now I would probably play it next year or so, when the foul taste has gone.

BTW someone at the kickstarter forum described the drm-free process pretty accurately:
downloading Steam, installing it, registering with a fake id, installing the game, finding and moving the installed game off some obscure directory, zipping it up, deinstalling steam again with the hope nothing which can call home resides, unzipping it finally into our c:\games, and THEN playing the game.
To which I might add and repeating all that when there are updates.

The Bass is the basis

I have no objections to steam, in fact I purchased another key code from steam just in case I didn't get a steam code, now I have 2 + 1 on gog which resulted ftom the beta access. I simply moved the tesla folder from steam apps/common & copied to documents & sent a shortcut to the desktop. works fine.

Just like games from big fish you need the installer, & itunes you can't download from there without itunes software.
Steam is just another platform to allow the download only difference is you can delete this platform when you are finished.

Big finish had full intentions of providing the codes from GOG just like the beta keys but when GOG couldn't find the time a decision was made to access all the codes from steam. When GOG did find the time it was too late. (no point shutting the door after the horse has bolted)

No matter how many times Big Finish and some people at different forums repeat how Tesla Effect is DRM-free through Steam it doesn't become more true. True DRM-free means that you buy the game, download the installation files and then are free to use those installation files on any computer and without running any form of client and without being connected to the intrenet. It's yours to do whatever you want with. Games purchased through GOG work like that. As I understand it Tesla Effect through Steam does not. If you download the game using Steam and immediately get rid of the client the game will not start. The installation needs to be activated by the client calling back home over the internet. The fact that you after such an activation may move the game to a different folder or whatever doesn't make it DRM-free.

Anyway, I will never ever register for an account with Steam and I became a backer only after feeling confident, through promises made by Big Finish, that the game would indeed be DRM-free. The fact that it isn't qualifies as nothing less than a scam and Big Finish needs to address this and at least explain themselves immediately. I have paid something like triple the money for a game that I will not be able to get, while people who didn't back the project can choose to get the game in true DRM-free form through GOG for 20 dollars.

this is one of the posts early 5/7

tesla file will not start for you if its copied into program files and not documents & you need to create a new desktop icon from the exe in the tesla folder by right clicking & sending to desktop.

You keep saying that.
Well, since we're bringing the Mutant League forum here, I'll quote this from a post made on Thursday at 23:36 if you'd like to check.

"I e-mailed Atlus customer support about the GOG codes earlier today and I have just received this reply from the QA Lead at Atlus U.S.A., Inc.
"We sent the GOG codes to Big Finish for distribution just recently. You should check with them about this matter."

Edit: As for it's being too late, I doubt the backers who refuse to use Steam would mind terribly if those keys were distributed even at this late date.
Will it make us any happier if Big Finish sits on them?

HandsFree, I completely understand your reluctance to give Steam more business and I thought of that when I gave that key away.
Truthfully, I don't understand how anyone could "not mind" Steam but the guy I gave it to already has games on Steam so he's not going to add to their numbers.

Gil.

frazap, as I posted above the game is 100% DRM free and and you can see the the video on how to properly do it here.

It is easy to blame BigFinish and insist that GoG did everything right when just like in other situations, you weren't there, you don't know what happened and I'm sure there was a good reason for BigFinish to handle it the way they did. Just because GoG delivers DRM free games doesn't mean they walk on water. It's kinda like parents who think their children do no wrong, we are all not perfect beings and sometimes those we love, do bad things.

That said, I am sorry that those that backed the game did not get what they wanted. I know there are lots of websites I wouldn't allow anywhere near my computers no matter what so I do feel your pain.

I didn't see anything in that video that demonstrated that the game isn't locked to that particular computer. Just because you don't see some sort of activation notice pop up on the computer doesn't mean it didn't happen during the download/install.

You can run Big Fish games without using the Big Fish client once you've downloaded, installed, and activated. However they only run as demos when the game files are transferred to another computer.

This isn't just about Big Finish reneging on a promised reward. It's about the viability of Kickstarter and similar crowdfunding sites as a whole. If a developer can back out of a promise without even trying to fill it, and Kickstarter lets them get away with it, why would anyone risk their money on a Kickstarter project? You need to have trust for the Kickstarter model to work.

Tex Update:

Quote:
Greetings Mutant League!
Best,
Chris

Hmmm. I don't understand all the negativity about the Steam site. I've had no real major problems with Steam and I have around 15 games in my library. To tell you the truth Big Fish is more of a pain to me than Steam. I have to wait for Big Fish to open up then wait for the game to load and put up with advertisements from Big Fish about their specials that only apply if I join their "club" and then when I close the game I have to wait for the game as well as Big Fish to close. Now I put up with, what to me, is an inconvenience because their are some games that I want that are on the Big Fish site and/or it is a good price. To take advantage of Big Fish benefits you have to join for a nominal fee and I don't purchase enough games from them for the fee to be of benefit to me. So I just pay the regular price for games from that site.

As far as this game is concerned, as I see it, Big Finish was trying to get the game in the hands of their backers as soon as possible and Steam just happened to be the first codes they had available so they sent them out immediately. It is now 2 days later and the GOG codes are available. I for one did not want to wait for the GOG codes and used the Steam codes the first day. I now have two (free copies) of the game, one from Steam and one from GOG.

Also, as an aside, I installed my game from Steam and closed the Steam app and the game works just fine without Steam. So you do not need to be connected to Steam to play the game. The advantage of Steam is that if there are patches or updates, Steam will load them automatically where with GOG you have to re-download the game in the event of patches/upgrades.

You laugh because I'm different
I laugh because you're all the same

Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.

That's certainly good news for those backers who don't want to deal with Steam. But why didn't they just say that to start with?

"The codes for the GOG version have been delayed, but we're working on getting them for you if you don't mind waiting."

would have been a lot better than replies like the one Mad got:

"But I do not have any GOG codes to distribute, and I’m not aware of any plans to distribute GOG codes in the future."

Hi Ana. Although I've yet to recieve my gog key i believe this issue has been resolved now. Just wanted to say that the video you link to tells me nothing i didn't already know. You can move the game to a different folder on the same computer, yes. Fine. But only after having activated the game (or "installed" as that girl/woman says) through steam. And I have yet to hear someone confirm that you can move the game to another computer and run it without having to activate it again through Steam.

As I understand it, it works just like Gamersgate's "DRM-free" games. It only means there is no DRM in the game executable itself, but everytime you want to install it you need an internet connection and the install executable phones home to Gamersgate to activate the whole thing. If that fails the game won't work. That's just as bad as any DRM. You basically rent the game.

So please, in all kindness, don't try to tell me what is DRM-free and what isn't. Games on GOG truly are. Games on Steam are not. And Big Finish promised options for those of us who don't have and never will get Steam. And here I am three days after the release of the game having paid three times the selling price and still waiting for that promise to be fulfilled.

I will never back a game by BFG again, that's for sure.

oldman, there is no fee for BigFish, you get one game credit a month and you can save them up. In two months you have enough for a Collector's Edition.

frazap,

I totally concur with this one difference: I will never again back a game by any developer on Kickstarter.
As I said somewhere else, I've been burned twice now, to my shame, but it won't happen a third time.
I will hope games I'm interested in get funded and made but I won't contribute to the making.
I'll wait until a game is released on GOG, pay less than I would have pledged and play it before the backers.

AFAIC, BFG's reply, trying to throw blame on GOG and/or Atlus when they had plenty of time to arrange for both GOG and Steam codes beforehand...and after a couple of days of dead silence...is too little, too late and shoddy.
It will be a long while before the "foul taste" HandsFree mentioned is gone from my mouth.

Gil.

Anna I was referring to the Big Fish Game Club which charges $6.99 per month. I have bought several games from Big Fish without being a member of the Game club and have never received any credits and have always been informed that in order to get any credits I had to be a member. Perhaps I am confused but I have several games to my credit and am registered but have no game credits.

oldman, the 6.99 is not a membership charge, you get a credit for one game with that. 1 credit gets you any regular game and 2 credits gets you a Collector's Edition. You can let the credits gather until you find a game you like.

glad this all sorted out now as I previously posted the fault was there with gog & not big finish.

As someone here posted they didn't believe someone could transfer the tesla file to another pc only the same one it was downloaded on, this is incorrect as I did it on my home pc. transferred the file to external drive & then coped to another pc & played the game!

big finish also tested it on their own pc's.

Well I am absolutely disgusted with the whole issue !!

Whoever is at fault the matter could have been sorted before now and in a much more professional manner.

As it is, I received yet another email today from Big Finish Games telling me that I can only use the Steam code I was sent.

I don't WANT to download from Steam so if push comes to shove I will cut my (Kickstarter) losses and go and BUY the darn game from GOG mad

I've certainly not been sent a GOG code yet, BrownEyedTigre whistle

But even if I am eventually sent one, it will not change how disgusted I am with the way this issue has been handled rolleyes

[I've also backed several other games via Kickstarter where DRM Free status has been promised. I just hope there won't be a mess like this when any of THOSE are released eek]

It's very sad (but understandable) that the discussion about the game has been totally overshadowed by this Kickstarter charade. I've started playing the game tonight and it's absolutely excellent.

I apologize for the Big Fish confusion. I did not mean for this to be a discussion about Big Fish at all. I was merely trying to point out the differences between Steam and other download sites and the fact that they all have things that some may or may not like about them.

My whole point was that, when you download a game, be it from Steam, Big Fish, The Adventure Shop or whatever, you either adhere to their policies or you refuse to use them. I don't think that a couple of days to wait for BFG to get the codes from GOG was unreasonable and, as I pointed out in my original post they should be given credit for trying to get the game out to their supporters as soon as possible. So it was Steam that happened first. They eventually did get the GOG codes out and as many people pointed out when they had to wait from April to May for the release it was worth the wait.

I agree with Mikael, this thread should be more about the game and I also am enjoying the game very much. I particularly like the flashbacks from other Tex games (I even saw one from the original) and the old familiar characters as well as some new ones.

I feel that this game was worth the wait and like the improvements they made on game movement and graphics. I say way to go BFG and thanks for the game.

Some people just don't like Steam and that's there right I don't particularly like the Adventure Shop because I've had some bad experiences with them and that's my right. Others may prefer the Adventure Shop.

Anyway I'm just happy that I've got the game and I am really enjoying being in the Tex Murphy environment once again.

Yes. My Gog Code email has just arrived, BrownEyedTigre, directly into my In Box.
But what a palaver it has been to get it !! thumbsdown

But I am very pleased to hear that those who are already playing the game are finding it good thumbsup

And I do apologise if I have contributed to this thread being "wrongly used" (?) to express disappointment and disgust at how the whole charade has played out yes

Mary while in the game you hit the esc key and the main menu will come up. You should see a save option click on that and your list of saves will become available. At the bottom you need to type in the name of the save you prefer and click on save or hit return and your game will be saved.

John,
Nothing happens when I press the "esc" key--nothing at all. I tried several times including right after the "day one" screen.

That's strange. Perhaps you should bring this up over in the glitches board. How do you exit the game?

John,
The only way I can get out of the game is if I use Ctrl-Alt-Delete.

I got the game directly through Big Finish Game.

Hmmm, evidently your esc key is not working. Maybe it's just this game or maybe it is your keyboard I again suggest that you ask this question at the Glitchs forum and possibly someone there might have an answer as to why your esc key is not working. You could also ask the tech support people at BFG.

Also as an additional thought, almost every game that I know of uses the esc key to get to the main menu. Do you have another game installed that you could load and see it your esc key works in that game? If it does then it's probably this game but if it also doesn't work in the other game then it's probably your keyboard. Just a thought.

I went to a YouTube and maximized the screen; then I used my "esc" key to return to the smaller-sized screen. It worked, so I don't think my keyboard is the problem.

Did you try the F5 to save and F9 to load that plumgas told you about?
From what you said earlier, your escape key is still not working in the game.
Has that situation changed?

Is the game out yet,I pre-ordered from GOG.com, but it's not showing up in my account yet. (I see it listed, but no link to download it!)
--------------

Never mind, I spoke too soon, I had to refresh my GOG.com account and the downloads showed up!

Now, do I keep playing BS4, and Tesla Effect after, or start Tesla, and go back and forth ?

I bought it on Steam and downloaded it last Thursday and played off and on since them. I'm on Day 7 and maybe because I'm a veteran of the Tex Murphy games (as played them when they first came out all those years ago) but most of the puzzles don't seem too difficult. Some I've had to get hints for or consult the playthrough on youtube. Especially the stuff in Day 5 as there was one puzzle I would have never mastered finding pieces for as thought I looked everywhere in a room to find them but sure enough I missed one area.

Up to you old buddy but if you want help on Tesla feel free to post and I'll be sure to get you a clue or hint to get you on your way. As the only thing I don't like about the in game hint system is in the old days they'd give you a hint or two where now they tell you everything you need to do step by step but then again if you view items in your inventory once you pick them up you get a hint there too.

Jenny,
I tried playing a little further into the game before pressing the "esc" key, and it worked and I was able to save my game.

I'll give the game more time tomorrow and try using the items in the "menu" (like loading the saved game). I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

The answer is....chocolate! Who cares what the question is.....
