Also playing Monkey Island and finally got the hang of the dueling banjos but when I try to get gun and shoot the dueling banjo as the pirate captain is showing off, the hero keeps saying, I can't take his banjo while he's playing instead of shooting the banjo. Where am I going wrong?

Have been trying to do so but cannot seem to get hero to follow through -- he keeps saying "I can't take his banjo while he's playing". Still must be missing something here but do not know what. Any more ideas out there?

My guess is that you have failed to do the dueling banjo part correctly. Have you picked up the banjo first and tried to play with him before attempting to shoot his banjo? As you have to play the exact string he plays a few times before the scene of him playing where Guybrush can no longer follow. As I recall the scenes where you have to pluck the same string shows a closeup of Van Helgen's banjo and afterwhich the closeup is exited.
hope this helps, Brian

That's right, you have to do the duelling banjo part. It's difficult. I did it as follows: give the strings a number and while he's playing, you note the numbers of the strings he touched. If you do so you can imitate him correctly. josefien

Yep have done the dueling banjo bit with the pirate -- was able to follow him until all of a sudden the pirate started his 'showing off' and that is the point I am told to get a gun and shoot the banjo.
Another person gave me directions and I think where I am going wrong is -- I thought you had the hero just pick up the gun and shoot. But evidently the gun goes into inventory and the hero has to retrieve it from there first. I did not do that. So hopefully that is where I am going wrong. Thanks to Brian and Josefien for your ideas however.

Yep I was right -- I needed to access my inventory for that gun. So am merrily on my way. This is quite a nice little game -- am enjoying it thoroughly.

Stuck again in Monkey Island game in the sandwhich shop where he chews the gum (no pun intended).
The WT tells me to chew the gum, then place the gold tooth in the wad of gum but I see no wad of gum that goes into the inventory. I tried the tooth on the hero, the tooth on the gum and various combinations of same but no luck.
So "stuck here". Again what am I doing wrong?

Lilac, the walkthrough I found says it a little differently, I think--here it is: SPOILER * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Longbeard mentioned wanting something crunchy to chew on, so give him the JAWBREAKER you got from Cuthroat Bill. That will loosen his Gold Tooth. Now he carves something chewy, so give him a piece of GUM. Longbeard will blow bubbles, making his loose Gold Tooth an obvious sillohuette in each bubble. When he blows a bubble, use the PIN on it to pop it and send the Gold Tooth to the floor. Pick up the GOLD TOOTH and go into you inventory.

Think I misled you Jenny. I am past that point. I am where the hero has the gold tooth and is trying to get it out of the shop. One WT tells me to chew the gum, get a wad, put the tooth in the wad, blow into balloon which will float the tooth out the window.
Other WT mentions no wad of gum just says to chew gum, then use it on the gold tooth, then blow into balloon etc. Well, no matter what combination of tooth and gum I use cannot get tooth into gum then into balloon. Must be missing something here.

Hey guys, one learns something everytime you play these games. I think what the big problem I am having is this -- there are two version of this game. What works in one version does not in the other. And the two WTs I have been looking at did not mention which version they were.
By doing some study I find there is no wad of gum in one version but there is in the other. The hero can just leave the sandwich shop without the pirate following him but in the other version cannot.
I think I have this all correct. Anyway I have started over to play the second version for which the WTs are written so will see how correct I am.
Do thank everyone for trying to help -- it has been very confusing and frustrating but hopefully my anaylsis will pay off. Keep you posted.

Lilac, that's very interesting--where do you find the two different versions, on the CD? Once you get it all sorted out, will you please let us know with which version the walkthrough we have on our site is connected...

Jenny, After you install the game and click on the icon to begin playing, on the screen that comes up you're given the choice to play in one of two modes: Easy (Curse of Monkey Island) or Hard (Mega-Monkey). I looked at the walkthrough here by Christine Caine and read her instructions for getting the Membership Card and the gold tooth and they are for the Mega-Monkey mode so I would assume the whole walkthrough is. Wouldn't that jar your mustard!

To all: Yep I am on the right track. And certainly have learned a great deal. I started out with the lesser puzzles version and am now playing the MegaVersion. The WT on this site is for the MegaVersion. It is going swimmingly well now. I thought I was losing it for awhile not being able to find things:) But of course they did not exist in the lesser version.
Despite all the problems I have had, this has been a fun fun game. Love the humor in it and the artwork is very different and interesting. Puzzles are not too difficult. Will be looking forward to more Monkey Games now.

Yes, the difference in my game is because I was first playing the easier version which is not megamonkey but following a WT that was for Megamonkey. No wonder I could not find some things. And tis true -- the Megamonkey game has more puzzles in it, more things to pick up and more things for the hero to accomplish. Rather clever little game when one gets onto all of this
