I have come to the conclusion that 8e must be sAcCharImEteR, either an alternative (but not in my dictionary) or misspelling of saccharometer, e being ACHIER = hurting more.

As you were! Further research indicates two slightly different gadgets for measuring the strength of sugar solutions, the apparent difference being that the saccharimeter relies to some extent on measuring light passing through the solution, whereas the other spelling denotes a type of hydrometer basically doing the same job.
