GOG is at it again. They're having a "timed" summer sale. Games appear for a couple of hours then vanish to be replaced by something else and they are up to 90% off! Right now, 2:30 EDT, Dark Eye, Chains of Satinav is going for 90% off $19.99 with 2 hours left to get it. The Raven, with 2 hours to go, is 75% off $24.99. You figure those discounts out. Sanitarium and The Cat Lady are coming up "soon". We are doomed. My wallet is already cringing. Gil.

Hey, Marian, I'm just curious. I find it hard to believe that a long-time gamer like you has never played Sanitarium. Are you just looking for a digital download to keep on your shelf that has probably been tweaked a bit?
Old as it is, this is a great, very weird game and definitely worth getting if anyone is on the fence about it.

Gil. Yep, their computers survived, but players' nerves were shot. Not fun taking all of the shattered pieces of CD out of their drives, either. Just picked up Sanitarium - thanks a bunch for posting about this, Gil.

Jack Keane 2 is up now, 85% off $29.99. (5:30 EDT) Other discounted games up right now are Amnesia, a Machine for Pigs and Memoria. One hour left to get Tales of Monkey Island at 90% off $34.99.Sherlock Holmes: The Case of the Silver Earring is coming soon. I wonder if any of these will repeat? With 700 games to go through, maybe not. I'm waiting for one particular game that I missed on the last sale. If it doesn't come fairly soon, I can see I'm going to be GOGgle-eyed, so to speak. Gil.

Thanks for the info, traveler. I picked up Back to the Future (which I already have on disk, but I couldn't resist the deal ) and Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Silver Earring (which I have not yet played ). Fantastic deals.

I'm getting to like digital downloads better than physical copies as long as they're on my GOG shelf all neatly rowed up. They don't gather dust and I can be sure they'll work ad infinitum on Win 7 without typing in codes. My copy of Grim; a lovely big box of Dracula: Resurrection; a few Sherlock Holmes games (Rushes would never speak to me again if I tossed those); Paradise, which I sorta like even though it's awful, and the LHOD games that aren't available on GOG (which wouldn't send you spiders anyway) stay with me but the rest...foof. It's sales like this that make my digital game shelf much bigger than the one my physical copies occupy. It just got another one when I picked up Book of Unwritten Tales for a measly five bucks. I hope the Darkside gamers are aware of the summer sale that's still going, if a bit toned down, because there are some really good deals there waiting for them. Gil.

Vegpot, Don't buy Driftmoon yet! It may come up again on the Summer Sale. I paid $2.24. Gil. Were you ever able to pick up Driftmoon, Gil? It was one of the deals last night. Yes! I hesitated to mention it since it's an RPG a you-know-what. I've only played a little but it's cute, goofy and I think it's going to be fun. Gotta do something about that font, though. Think I can. Gil. You're allowed to make a frisbee out of SH Mystery of the Mummy. The rest you must cherish forever. Dang, and here I thought I might like to play MotM but it must be really bad if you'd sail it out the window. Oh, geez, I didn't mean to stack. Mea maxima culpa. Gil.

Well, how can I not forgive someone who apologizes in Latin? I just picked up the Dracula Trilogy for $1.99. I'm all done with the sale now, I'm all done with the sale now....

Urk, I know just what you mean. It was driven home when I looked at GOG's front page just now and on one of the bundles up at the top a little flag said: "You own everything from this deal. :)" Let me know if you find that malware, Marian. I think I need it. Gil.

Ok, Sanitarium. Don't know why I had Bad Mojo in my head.
I am also still watching the sale. The Dracula Trilogy is coming up again and I'm pretty sure I'll be hitting buy because I did love the first two games.
So far I bought all the Broken Sword, all the Tex Murphy except the latest one, Sanitarium, Ether One, Gemini Rue (the reviews scared me off but this was cheap enough), Journey to the Center of the Earth which I have on disc not played, I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream, and Stacking.

Oh (sigh) I saw that message once, too, Marian.
If you want to really see how weak-kneed you are when a deal comes along, go to your Shelf and count your games. Oog.
Congratulate me, though! I turned down Kentucky Route Zero! (Please don't let it come up again...please....)

How long does this sale go on? Do I have to keep an eye on it while I'm at work? According to an email received: The 2014 DRM-Free Summer Sale ends on June 30 at 12:59 GMT It's going to be a looooong two weeks.

Marian,
I gather Kentucky Route Zero is not much of an adventure game but it is an adventure and nearly all of the reviews from people who've played it are glowing. Of course, they glowed for Dear Esther, too, and I have no desire a'tall to play that. I dunno, there's just something about this one that intrigues me. Problem is, aside from the half price on the sale still being above what I can cajole myself into paying, Kentucky Route Zero is not finished. You're paying for a season pass and it's on Episode 3. So...I keep telling myself Wait until it's done. Might be hard, though.
Gil.

Buy the whole bundle or take your pick of those you don't own. Bundle prices, up to 90% off, are below.
Broken Sword 1 through 4: $5.56 Leisure Suit Larry compilation (3 games): $4.37 Tex Murphy Classics (4 games): $7.16 Deponia Trilogy: $11.97 Runaway Trilogy: $5.97 Sam and Max (3): $9.47
I'm not sure but I think Steam is starting a big sale today, too, for those of you who use it.

I too got the email from GOG about the sale and it's super, some of the prices are unbelievable. I've bought three or four games but it seems that so many are action or strategy and I don't really care for those, I prefer adventure point and click. I've been tempted to purchase Syberia 1 & 2 (I have two copies) and A New Beginning, my granddaughters favorite, even though we've played it. Afraid the discs will not play on newer computers. Is Sanitarium that great? Is it gory? I'd like to pick up a few more while the prices are so good. Any recommendations?

Sanitarium is strange, Terri824. There's a tiny bit of gore but the real horror comes in Max's drugged dreams. Dreams? They must be dreams. You start in an asylum where no one but you is sane. You're sent to save horribly deformed children from a monstrous 'Mother' by a statue of an angel that comes to life yet it seems they don't care...or do they? You play as an alien superhero, your own sister who died in childhood, an Aztec chief, all the time trying to surface from the nightmare and discover what it all means. The graphics are relatively old so you're more or less shielded from what it might look like now if Sanitarium was new. (Oh, boy, perish the thought!) Movement is a little odd; you hold down the Right mouse button and steer Max in the direction you want him to move. I have only two real criticisms: whoever voiced Max sounds as if he understudied a wooden Indian but, hey, at least he doesn't whine; and right at the end of the game there's a 'boss fight' the devs should have left out. I ended up watching the last little bit of the game on YouTube since I couldn't get past that miserable chessboard but it really made no difference; I totally enjoyed the game. Anyhow, here's the GOG page for Sanitarium with screenshots and other peoples' views on the game. I looked for a review here on GB and was surprised to see there isn't one since Sanitarium is on the list of all time greats but there are a couple of walkthroughs. Gil.

I lucked out on the chessboard in Sanitarium the first time I played; I had little to no idea what I was doing, and I beat it. Ignorance was bliss. Terri, I have also seen GOG running 2-hour sale/flash deals on the following adventure games: The Dark Eye: Memoria Edna and Harvey: The Breakout Edna and Harvey: Harvey's New Eyes Blackwell Bundle (The Blackwell Legacy, Blackwell Unbound, Blackwell Convergence, and Blackwell Deception) Ceville The Book of Unwritten Tales: The Critter Chronicles .....just to name a few. The 2-hour sale/flash deals do repeat from time to time; you just have to keep checking back to see what is currently on offer.

Wow, that game sounds a bit bizarre Gil but if it goes on the flash sale again I'll grab it. Thanks for the info. Marian I'll check out the game recommendations, thanks. I think most of those have cartoon characters which are not my favorite but I'll still take a look. Terri I've been to GOG so often to check the "flash sales" I'm surprised my G & O on my keyboard work. I didn't find The Dark Eye on GOG. Is Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare heavy on action and is it part of the Alone in the Dark series? Oops, think I just answered my own question on that one. Do you have to play 1,2 & 3 to understand The New Nightmare or does it stand alone?

Terri, If you want to find a game on GOG, just go to Browse Games and use the Search Function. Here is The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav. Gil.

Thanks Gil. I was wanting The Dark Eye Memoria. I should have been more specific! Let me try this again. I know darn well I did a search for Memoria and it did not pull it up, however I just did it again and there it is. Wow, I'm scaring myself. Any input for the game Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare? I've looked at so many games I think I'm losing track of what I'm doing. Terri

Hi Norma, I don't have Windows 8 but rather Windows 7, so I can't speak from experience, but if the download page says that the game will run on Windows 8, then it should work on Windows 8. GOG has a downloader that you can use to download the games, but it's optional and not required. I find for myself that my downloads are faster if I use the GOG downloader. You can read about the downloader here. By the way, I believe that I have seen a few walkthroughs here on GameBoomers that you wrote; it's nice to see you.

Hi, Norma, Just a note to let you know that if you ever do have any problems with a GOG game, your best bet is to check the game's forum first. Often enough, you'll find the answer you need right there. Gil.

Nope, I'm not fond of horror games so I haven't played it but have you watched the trailer or read the reviews on GOG? Two stars...that's pretty bad. Gil.

It seems we're in the same boat, chrissie. The incredible deals on the sale made it possible for me to pick up games I'd been wanting to play but couldn't have afforded, even some Darkside ones that it made no sense to buy if it turned out they were too much for old fingers but I could justify buying at some of these wildly low prices. I'm with Marian; it's just as well they're repeating so much now and tempting me less! Gil.

For the next hour you can get this one at Gog.com for $6.24 reduced down from $24.99. I am presently playing this one and may write a review. For this sales price it is a good buy well worth the investment, if you like Agatha Christy types. For $24.99 well, run away, run far away. Had I paid full price I'd be furious but at $6.24 it is a good game, flawed but worth this price.

Thanks, oldmariner. That's a great reduction, and worth snapping up at that price.

The game is a bit clunky and the space bar does not reveal hot spots as noted by Mag in her walk through. Locating things to click on becomes a frustrating pixel hunt. Too many items are poorly defined. With that said it is a long game, all three parts included. It is a good detailed story. I'm only half way through it but beyond the mechanical issues it's well worth the reduced price. Oh yeah, there is no manual Mag's walk is needed for the basics.
