Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

Things To Ponder

1. Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things.

7. Could it be that all those trick-or-treaters wearing sheets aren't going as ghosts but as mattresses?

8. If a mute swears, does his mother wash his hands with soap?

24. Is it true that cannibals don't eat clowns because they taste funny?

25. What was the best thing before sliced bread?

26. One nice thing about egotists: they don't talk about other people.

27. To be intoxicated is to feel sophisticated, but not be able to say it.

31. Procrastination is the art of keeping up with yesterday.

32. Women like silent men, they think they're listening.

33. Men are from Earth, women are from Earth. Deal with it.

34. Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

35. Do pediatricians play miniature golf on Wednesdays?

36. Before they invented drawing boards, what did they go back to?

37. Do infants enjoy infancy as much as adults enjoy adultery?

38. If all the world is a stage, where is the audience sitting?

39. If God dropped acid, would he see people?

40. If one synchronized swimmer drowns, do the rest have to drown too?

41. If the #2 pencil is the most popular, why is it still #2?

42. If work is so terrific, how come they have to pay you to do it?

43. If you ate pasta and anti-pasta, would you still be hungry?

Tombstone Humor
These epitaphs are reported to be from actual tombstones...

On the grave of Ezekial Aikle in East Dalhousie Cemetery, Nova Scotia:
Here lies
Ezekial Aikle
Age 102
The Good
Die Young.

In a London, England cemetery:
Ann Mann
Here lies Ann Mann,
Who lived an old maid
But died an old Mann.
Dec. 8, 1767

In a Ribbesford, England, cemetery:
Anna Wallace
The children of Israel wanted bread
And the Lord sent them manna,
Old clerk Wallace wanted a wife,
And the Devil sent him Anna.

Playing with names in a Ruidoso, New Mexico, cemetery:
Here lies
Johnny Yeast
Pardon me
For not rising.

Memory of an accident in a Uniontown, Pennsylvania cemetery:
Here lies the body
of Jonathan Blake
Stepped on the gas
Instead of the brake.

In a Silver City, Nevada, cemetery:
Here lays Butch,
We planted him raw.
He was quick on the trigger,
But slow on the draw.

A widow wrote this epitaph in a Vermont cemetery:
Sacred to the memory of
my husband John Barnes
who died January 3, 1803
His comely young widow, aged 23, has
many qualifications of a good wife, and
yearns to be comforted.

A lawyer's epitaph in England:
Sir John Strange
Here lies an honest lawyer,
And that is Strange.

Someone determined to be anonymous in Stowe, Vermont:
I was somebody.
Who, is no business
Of yours.

Lester Moore was a Wells, Fargo Co. station agent for Naco, Arizona in the cowboy days of the 1880's. He's buried in the Boot Hill Cemetery in Tombstone, Arizona:
Here lies Lester Moore
Four slugs from a .44
No Les No More.

In a Georgia cemetery:
"I told you I was sick!"

John Penny's epitaph in the Wimborne, England, cemetery:
Reader if cash thou art
In want of any
Dig 4 feet deep
And thou wilt find a Penny.

On Margaret Daniels grave at Hollywood Cemetery Richmond, Virginia:
She always said her feet were killing her
but nobody believed her.

In a cemetery in Hartscombe, England:
On the 22nd of June
- Jonathan Fiddle -
Went out of tune.

Anna Hopewell's grave in Enosburg Falls, Vermont has an epitaph that sounds like something from a Three Stooges movie:
Here lies the body of our Anna
Done to death by a banana
It wasn't the fruit that laid her low
But the skin of the thing that made her go.

More fun with names with Owen Moore in Battersea, London, England:
Gone away
Owin' more
Than he could pay.

Someone in Winslow, Maine didn't like Mr. Wood:
In Memory of Beza Wood
Departed this life
Nov. 2, 1837
Aged 45 yrs.
Here lies one Wood
Enclosed in wood
One Wood
Within another.
The outer wood
Is very good:
We cannot praise
The other.

On a grave from the 1880's in Nantucket, Massachusetts:
Under the sod and under the trees
Lies the body of Jonathan Pease.
He is not here, there's only the pod:
Pease shelled out and went to God.

The grave of Ellen Shannon in Girard, Pennsylvania is almost a consumer tip:
Who was fatally burned
March 21, 1870
by the explosion of a lamp
filled with "R.E. Danforth's
Non-Explosive Burning Fluid"

Oops! Harry Edsel Smith of Albany, New York:
Born 1903--Died 1942
Looked up the elevator shaft to see if
the car was on the way down. It was.

In a Thurmont, Maryland, cemetery:
Here lies an Atheist
All dressed up
And no place to go.

Oh, L4L, you work too hard. My day will be nappy and gamey because I had to get up at 6 and take all my trash to Lexington collection. It's nice to get there before the line starts. Nobodys there and I throw my stuff in the pods or whatever they call them and homeddy-home. Or maybe I'll get a bunch of klondyke bars and enjoy.

Sorta, you are correct about Penelope but she would make a great pet. Do you know where she came from. Has any neighbor moved recently.

There's a killer cat lurking about and my (scardy) cats are on super alert. They are recluse and cautious when they venture to the litter box. And then they sleep. Even Buttercup the bully. And it's kinda funny. Killer is a greystripe and white kit who is getting food somewhere because he looks pretty good. I'll watch him.

Happy weekend all

Wow Ana! Better take a first aid kit. Ohhhh. Pointy things and burning things. Ouch! Have fun!

Ah yes Yankee. The peacock probably, most likely, belongs to the family who owns 4 plots of property just up the street. Actually now it's 3 because they let one get foreclosed. Anyway, they have a huge house about 200 feet back off the road and they constantly have various farm animals there. Mostly chickens, ducks, turkeys, etc. A few years ago, a huge turkey was walking up and down my driveway. Finally the son came running over, grabbed it and smiled and said, 'Thanksgiving'. Poor turkey. The Dad there (who is not quite all there) talked about his ducks a few times. So I'm figuring the peacock is theirs, they could care less if it roams and they are not nice people. Several years ago, they had 5 huge dogs (mostly huskies) which they let roam the neighborhood night and day. Always in the street, a few got run over. I called animal control about one lying in the dirt at the side of the road thinking it was dead. It wasn't just sleeping happily.

So I went to the door of the house, was met by a very grouchy lady who told me to mind my own business, the dogs are all fine, tagged, etc. I said to keep them in or on leashes and she really got mad. Oh well. I found out from animal control this was the FIFTH time they had confiscated all the dogs for roaming. Eventually they all 'disappeared'. Poor doggies.

So later, I had the lady's daughter in my pregnant minor's class at school. 15 and having a kid. She was chatty (way too chatty) but fun. To this day, the daughter and I are friends and the mom still stares daggers at me if I'm anywhere near her.

Pretty sure the peacock is theirs, but nobody seems to really claim it and if I can't catch it, it will probably be hit by a car or get into a fight with a raccoon. Sad.

Today I put out a plate of seeds again. It came right to me when I called it and happily ate. I am going to try to 'tame' her and then maybe I can catch her. She should be on a farm with lots of land and people who would take care of her. A crowded, busy, urban neighborhood is no place for a lovely peacock. I'm learning to live with Penelope and will see what happens.

Nan, how wonderful to be able to pick lilacs while your walking.

I agree with you Yankee, but the maid ran away and the cook is in hiding and I can't talk the dogs into keeping their hair on their bodies. Hope killer kitty turns friendly.

Space, doing anything fun?

Ana, have fun playing in the mud!

Darlene, how were your feet rotfl

Sorta, I hope Penelope can be relocated soon.

Boys are "resting". Lil Soot is trying to mooch treats. Hubby will take them to the park in a it and I'm going to start stewing the books.

So I was checking on Penelope and guess where she was? IN the cage eating from the plate of seeds! Of course I hadn't set the 'trap' yet as I'm trying to get her used to feeling safe in there. Darn darn. I could have just run over there blocked her exit and let the door slam shut, BUT I'd locked it in up position and it would have been a trick to get it unhooked. Oh well, missed my first chance. BUT found out she LOVES and I mean loves loves loves grapes! I put out 10 little ones in a dish and they were gone by the time I washed my hands and went back out to check. Geez. I guess I know what bait to use. Wow. I'll watch her for awhile, get her comfy and non-scared of me and then hopefully trap her. Poor thing, no friends to play with. A solitary bird. Needs company. Yup.
