Well, I've killed a good few hours playing Driftmoon and though I'm not finished yet, I thought I'd let Marian know it was well worth waiting for it on the GOG summer sale.
Consider yourself told, Marian. grin

I don't know how else to put it except to say this game is charming and a lot of fun.

There are four levels, Adventurer, Champion, Warlord and Guardian.
I'm playing Champion (recommended for newbies) and I probably should have picked Adventurer as many times as I've been killed but reverting to a saved game was always fairly painless and I learned fast that you save early and often. grin

If anyone is looking for some tough combat, evidently you can get it with the Guardian mode.
I had to laugh when I watched a piece of a playthrough on YouTube and the guy was really surprised that he wasn't quite as much of a badass great player as he thought.

On the other hand, someone on GOG said that his 5 year old niece and nephew (twins) love Driftmoon playing as Adventurers!
(Something to keep in mind if you have kids around who'd love to play an RPG with you.)

It really is a lovely game complete with odd and funny characters, the easiest slider puzzle ever created, and...are you ready?...a do-it-yourself maze.
I took one look at the big one (oh, yes, there are two but the small one is really small) and ran.
Maybe tomorrow. grin

Gil.

Oh, that sounds great, Gil; I will have to get started on this game very soon! smile

A do-it-yourself maze??? This I must see!

I will choose Adventurer or Champion for my first play-through.

Keep us posted on your progress. I love hearing your thoughts about the game. wave

I think he would, L4L.
The main character is a boy (no choice there) he can name after himself.
He travels with a friend his age, a firefly named Flitt, his older brother (part of the time) and a black panther!
Oh, and a stone dwarf I haven't quite figured out how to use yet. grin
The good guys are either goofy or likeable.
The villains are properly villainous and ugly but not too scary, IMO.
Of course, they offed me a lot until I figured out how to use the ingredients for potions and equipment.
Your grandson will probably do a lot better at that!

Ah, and it's not WASD, thank goodness.
You move by holding down the left mouse button and dragging/pushing the cursor as you do in DD.
And (hint) you can move some things with your mouse.

Gil.

I'm going to check this out for him. Will have to get hubby to hook up g'son's computer to the net first...I don't allow the kids to play on mine anymore.

Depending on how old he is, he may need you there with him, l4l, to voice the game grin and help him figure out how to do what.
As if you didn't know that.

Here's Part 1 of a playthrough on YouTube played as Champion.

This game has received very high ratings on GOG, so I decided to buy it for myself. It's really cheap today at the sale price.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Oy vey,
I was rocking along just fine with only one quest unsolved (and can't solve now until I leave the island of Eione where my journey has taken me) but I've hit a snag, a *@#!! timing puzzle.
I have to take myself over a path of steam vents that go off at intervals.
Me figure that out? Aack!

So, I headed for the Driftmoon forum on GOG and found a Q & A about that very thing.
One of the devs posted a link to cheats.
Assuming I understand what I'm reading, I'll try it once my burning feet recover.

Otherwise, I'm really enjoying the game and becoming a whiz at killing monsters...small ones.

grin

Good luck, Gil, and thanks for posting the link to the cheats. Not that I would need to use them or anything. grin

"Not that I would need to use them or anything. grin"

Of course not!
That was for the ones who play those wimpy Darkside games like Max Payne 3 if they want to branch out. wink

Sometime later....
It worked!
The teleport cheat worked!
I managed to get myself stuck in a stone but I just jumped again. grin
Found my brother (That's Robert?) and I'm off the island!

Well, I finished it and I have to say it's a little too sweet for my taste.
But I had fun and if you want to you can make your own mod for it if you have a talent in that direction.
There are mods already available on the main menu.
Maybe I'll try one eventually but right now I'm trying to play DD on Normal.
(How does anyone play this game on Hard???)
Thank goodness I knew where to dodge the strongest orcs and find a decent sword or I'd be toast after (strangely) whizzing through Aleroth's catacombs and Thelyron.
Boy, Original Sin has some living up to to do!

Thanks for letting us know, Gil. Congrats on finishing. thumbsup

I picked up Divine Divinity for $1.49 on the GOG sale. I started the game many years ago but only played about an hour of it and never got back to it. I'm hoping to restart the game in the coming weeks. I also just installed Neverwinter Nights on my Windows 7 and have that up and running now. I've got plenty of gaming to do. woot

Let us know how you do with DD on normal level.

Marian,
Divine Divinity is one of my two favorite games.
I love it.
Sometimes I wish I could find another area to explore but when I'm droopy and tired, I fire up the game and go hunting orcs again.
Larian could have left out all the other 'bad guys' and I'd be happy with orcs.
I actually think they're cute...except when they off me. grin
I really hope you enjoy it even half as much as I do.
A buck forty-nine is an insult!
But I'm glad you got it for the price if it means you play this wonderful game.

Gil.

Have you been playing as a warrior, a wizard, or a survivor? I need to decide which one to pick. smile

I've played as a male warrior and a male wizard.
Never tried the survivor because he wears a lace collar.
What a reason, eh? grin
Anyhow, it's probably best to play the warrior since he's the strongest.
I like his voice...reminds me of Rolf Saxon in a way.
(Zandalor and the Dragon Rider are great.)
The wizard is the weakest of the two when you start although his magic is very effective in the dungeon until he's ganged up on.
Then you want the warrior's Special Move with a sword or knife, although I did make it through the boss fight in the dungeon with the wizard on Easy.
A few hints: stockpile all the red and blue potions you can, keep Restoration active and...need I say it?...Save Often!
grin

Oh, I will pick up Risen 2 at some point, for sure. And unless the release date has changed, I am reading that Risen 3 is being released in August. How are we ever going to keep up? laugh

I remember that Neverwinter Nights is on your favorites list. I have had the original game and two expansion packs sitting here for years, and decided that it was high time that I get acquainted with them. smile

Gil, getting it moved to g'son's computer is on Soot's "to do" list today. I've been playing it and liking it on my computer, but I think I'm playing on a higher level than g'son will be able to.
