I'm still stuck at the first boss battle in this game, the tentacle monster. Every now and again I spend a few hours trying to get past it, but there's really no way. I can't imagine why they put such a hard battle so early in the game, and it's not like I'm a noob when it comes to this stuff, so I'm finding this situation pretty annoying.

Is there a cheat I can use to get past this? I'd like to play the game after all these years.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Hi Hagatha

Here's a video from youtube

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2gXbmhb5-I

Here's a piece of advice from the Witcher's forums:

http://steamcommunity.com/app/20920/discussions/0/828925216481397813/

Quote:

use the trap spell (yrden or something) on the ground where the tentacles drop to stun them. once they're stunned just attack the glowing(?) part of it. rinse and repeat.

Here's some advice from gamesfaqs.com

http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/975399-the-witcher-2-assassins-of-kings/59315863

Quote:
if you need to heal up, assuming you got a swallow potion up. there is a huge fragment right in front of it you can use for cover. when you are run to and up the fallen bridge rocks, make sure you use dodge roll. so you don't get hit.
for this fight, the dodge rolling talent is a god send if you have it. just 1 point = 100% increase in distance, 2 = 200% increase.

And lastly, a very nice piece of advice from the forums at gog.com
http://www.gog.com/forum/the_witcher_2/strategy_for_defeating_the_kayran_for_those_who_have_trouble

I'' quote two pieces of advice:

Quote:
First, make sure that you have purchased and made the Kayran trap from Cedric, and acquired the Mongoose potion. These two are invaluable, especially the potion (make sure to drink it before the fight starts, also include a Swallow and Tawny Owl in the mix).

Second, the only two signs you should be using is Yrden and Quen. Cast Quen first, as your vigor seems to not recharge when active thus you should still have a pip of vigor left to use Yrden at a later point. Quen will give you a free hit for it's duration, so if the Kayran gets in a lucky shot it will just take off Quen and leave you unscathed. Also note that you should always wait for both pips to recharge before casting Quen again. Unless if you are in major trouble.

Hope this helps smile

I think that's why I've never been able to beat the Kayran either - I don't have the Mongoose potion. Hmmm... more things to do before I can take this fight on, I guess.

Thanks, Karsten - you're the best!

Yes, thanks.

Mongoose potion I do have already, unfortunately. I think I've built my character the wrong way. He just isn't strong enough in any category.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

I always wish there was a way to reset your character's build without having to start a new game.

Too bad. I never had much trouble with Witcher, so it's a problem peculiar to this game. Someday I'll get through it.

Hi Hagatha,
I found the Kayran, even on "Easy" mode, one of the most frustrating parts of this awesome game. It can be quite challenging, especially so early in the game.. Bad news, I have never found any cheat to get pass this boss. Good News this fight comes before any real game changing decisions have been made. Actually the game really takes off after you kill the kayran . Many key decisions that will have major effect in the game are just ahead, like picking a side to ally with, Vernon Roche or Iorveth. Anyways, once again, since this Boss (Kayran) is very early on in the game, and as of yet you still have not had to pick a side or decide on any major plot points, I think there is one way I can help.

I have a PC game save right after you get your reward for defeating the Kayran, It's the diagram to make the Kayran Armor, short some basic materials to create it, but easily obtainable. The Character has finished Most side quests and is at level 11 with two talents to distribute. Also, since I started witcher 2 with Witcher 1 "end game" save , I received as a bonus, The Aerondight Silver Sword to start the game. If you decide to want to use save, load it and just start walking and a cut scene with Triss will start the next part of the main quest .

Anyways if your interested in the game save , let me know , and I will find the file (I know I have it somewhere) & create a link to my OneDrive.

I do hope one day you get to finish this game. Witcher 3 is coming early next year.

Take Care,
Patchman

patchman, I would also be forever in your debt for this saved game. I've been trying to beat the Kayran off and on for over a year! I've play a couple of dozen shooters and RPGs and this is the first time I've ever cried "uncle!"

Thanks very much for your help, patchman. I've watched my son beat this part of the game (more than once, in fact, and he makes it look rather easy rolleyes ), but he was playing the console version so we could not provide any help for the PC players who were stuck here.

Hi All,
I finally found my archived saves. Anyways here is the link for the saved game. http://1drv.ms/1nB3Cm4 just click on file and it will save to your computer.

You may want to Keep the save so after you finish, (I have faith you will finish) then want to replay it , it is a very good place to start .

Also, save often. You never know when a glitch or a bad choice will happen. I had a sword left by a pool after a swim (x-rated) with Triss. Geralt did not pick up one of his swords, took a while before I noticed it was not on him. But I understand how he / we forgot it. I had use a save and go back to replay that scene again. Oh well.

Anyways just place " AutoSave_XXX.sav" into your witcher 2 "gamesaves" folder . Mine is located at C:\Users\Username\Documents\Witcher 2\gamesaves . Like I said, just start walking and you should be greeted with a Cut scene with Triss.

One more thing. I will be adding a couple PDF files (Witcher Super Guide,& Witcher 2 Choices & Consequences) that were of great help to me, well as soon as I find them. As you can tell, not so organized. hopefully soon. Anyways, Have fun !

I truly hope this will help some of you.

Take Care,
Patchman

Patchman, you are an angel! Thank you so much!

EDIT: It all worked perfectly! Thank you so much, Patchman. It's so nice to move on in the game finally. Maybe someday, I'll load that save with the Kayran and beat it, but for now I'm off with Triss!

I've snagged the save, also, because even though I've not started Witcher 2 yet, if veteran RPG-ers have been stuck at this point, there is absolutely no doubt I will be !!!! lol

So thanks from me, too, patchman thumbsup

Hi All,
Thanx for the kind words. Glad it has helped.

just in case you are interested, I finally found and uploaded 3 more files to my OneDrive (2 Game Guides & a Choices and Consequence Guide) .

Draclvr: Awesome, cant wait to hear when you finish the game, what you thought of it. might take a bit to remember mechanics of game, but eventually it will come all come back to you. When the time comes, I'll be interested to see who you decide to ally with the first time through. Oh yeah, definitely , go back and beat that [blip],... oops, I mean, that Kayran to a pulp. Like Looney4labs says "Go,Drac, Go!"

Mad: Yeah it really can be a difficult fight. Either way, if you do decide to play with that Kayran save, be sure to use the combat tutorial, play intro to game and a couple quests first, so you get familiar with the controls, and the story. then load that save, and lose yourself in a awesome story, filled with very hard decisions, that either way you decide , you'll think about long after, wondering if you made the " Right" decision. It can get kinda difficult throughout so, one final tip: Make sure it's on "Easy Mode" .

Enjoy your weekend,
Patchman

Hi patchman smile

I never play RPGs on any level other than "easy" mode (given a choice) because although I have played (or attempted to play) quite a few RPGs over the years, I am really an Adventure game player lol

And I won't just start the game and then load your save, either !! What a thought !!
I won't use it until I HAVE to laugh

Thanks again.

Cheers.

Ah. This could be very helpful. Many thanks. I'm in the middle of a game of Fallout New Vegas but will have another go at W2 soon enough.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.
