REMEMBER BLACK & WHITE TV?

Black and White TV?? (Under age 40? You won't understand.)
You could hardly see for all the snow,

Spread the rabbit ears as far as they go, or even go outside to turn the antenna.
Pull a chair up to the TV set,

Walk to the set to change the channel from the one you were watching to one of the 'other two'.

'Good Night, David.
Good Night, Chet.'

And that's the way it was on this day.....

My Mom used to cut chicken, chop eggs and spread mayo on the same cutting board with the same knife and no bleach, but we didn't seem to get food poisoning..

My Mom used to defrost hamburger on the counter and I used to eat it raw sometimes, too. Our school sandwiches were wrapped in wax paper in a brown paper bag, not in ice pack coolers, but I can't remember getting e. Coli.

Almost all of us would have rather gone swimming in the lake instead of a pristine pool (talk about boring), no beach closures then.
The term cell phone would have conjured up a phone in a jail cell, and a pager was the school PA system.

We all took gym, not PE...and risked permanent injury with a pair of high top Keds (only worn in gym) instead of having cross-training athletic shoes with air cushion soles and built in light reflectors. I can't recall any injuries but they must have happened because they tell us how much safer we are now.
Flunking gym was not an option.... Even for stupid kids! I guess PE must be much harder than gym.
Speaking of school, we all said prayers and sang the national anthem, and staying in detention after school caught all sorts of negative attention.

.We must have had horribly damaged psyches. What an archaic health system we had then. Remember school nurses? Ours wore a hat and everything.

I thought that I was supposed to accomplish something before I was allowed to be proud of myself.

I just can't recall how bored we were without computers, Play Station, Nintendo, X-box or 270 digital TV cable stations.

Oh yeah... And where was the Benadryl and sterilization kit when I got that bee sting? I could have been killed!

We played 'king of the hill' on piles of gravel left on vacant construction sites, and when we got hurt, Mom pulled out the 48-cent bottle of mercurochrome (kids liked it better because it didn't sting like iodine did) and then we got our butt spanked.

Now it's a trip to the emergency room, followed by a 10-day dose of a $49 bottle of antibiotics, and then Mom calls the attorney to sue the contractor for leaving a horribly vicious pile of gravel where it was such a threat.

We didn't act up at the neighbor's house either; because if we did we got our butt spanked there and then we got our butt spanked again when we got home.

I recall Donny Reynolds from next door coming over and doing his tricks on the front stoop, just before he fell off.

Little did his Mom know that she could have owned our house.

Instead, she picked him up and swatted him for being such a goof. It was a neighborhood run amuck.

To top it off, not a single person I knew had ever been told that they were from a dysfunctional family..

How could we possibly have known that?

We needed to get into group therapy and anger management classes.

We were obviously so duped by so many societal ills, that we didn't even notice that the entire country wasn't taking Prozac!

How did we ever survive?

LOVE TO ALL OF US WHO SHARED THIS ERA; AND TO ALL WHO DIDN'T, SORRY FOR WHAT YOU MISSED. I WOULDN'T TRADE IT FOR ANYTHING!

Good morning everyboomie. welcome

Ah I love nostalgia. It makes me remember cool stuff. wink

These days I can remember more of my childhood than what I did yesterday. think

I remember the feeling of warm dust on my bare feet as I played around my neighborhood. bravo

I remember 'hide and seek', and 'kick the can'. yes

I remember walking to school and back, and riding my bicycle all over town. happydance

I remember carrying our cat up the Elm tree in our front yard, and dropping him to see if he would land on his feel. oops

Cell phone?? We had two tin cans linked together with a piece of wire.

I remember asking an operator to connect me to my friend's house, and listening to people have conversations on a party-line, and not being able to make any calls until they hung up. taz

I try and take a dose of nostalgia every week. thumbsup

What kind of memories do you have??

I have a 3:30 wake up in the morning, or in the middle of the night actually, so I've gotta post this and run.

Have a nostalgic day everyone.

How about catching lightning bugs in a can? They are almost extinct here now sadly.

Have a awesome day Joe and all!

I'll be working and taking Sam to lunch at Rainforest Cafe.

When I was a child in New York, we would catch lightning bugs in jars (with holes in the lids) and let them light up our bedroom all night. Then in the morning, we would let them all go. Was so much fun. I remember the SMELL of lightning bugs. Yuk.

Good Morning Joe, Ana, Sorta, and Haroula. Coffee is ready. I remember walking to the Library in the summer to get a book. I'll bet the kids today rarely enter a real library. Enjoy your day All! wave

Magnificent Monday ya'll puppy

Hubby and I popped up bright and early to walk the monkeys. It was nice out...not cool, but not horrible either. Then home to put my pills together for the month. Have to have peace and quiet to do that. Breakfast for hubby and I, cleaned up the kitchen and got the dishwasher runnning, and put yogurt on.

Finally down to sit and surf for a sec. Boys are still here..they don't go back to school for 2 weeks, though the schools in our town started today.

I remember spending all day every day outside in the summer time. Even if I was reading I was outside under a tree, unless my mom was looking for me to do chores then I would hiding with my book and pretending not to hear her. We spent lots of time at the pool followed by the library. I loved lying on my back under a big tree and watching the sky through the leaves. I remember jacks too, and having to sit on the ice cream maker while it was being cranked once it got a bit stiff. And watermelon happydance

Nan, they said the reason the fireflies are gone are that they lay they eggs in the ground and that the lawn treatment people put on their manicured lawns kills them off before hatching. Between that and the lights all over that disrupt their mating signals they are not reproducing.

Off to take a shower and then Sam is coming over. yay

Have a happy day all!

Ana no wonder. They put something on the grass here this Spring and it made Sassy sick for a week. They should just leave God's garden alone to grow. lol Hope the project is moving right along for you.

Midge are you liking your new phone?? I was at AT&T the other day and was looking loooooong at them. lol

Night Haroula, sleep well!

Time to head out and do some BINGO howlering!! lol

Hi Ana. I'm loving it, thanks for asking. Still learning things about it that I didn't have on my WIN XP. I did have all my files backed up though so I didn't lose much. It's faster.

Nan I love my Amazon fire phone. Very different than the phone I had, which wasn't too bad. The thing I like so far is that I get a year of amazon prime extended from what I already had. Many different things to explore. I highly recommend it.
