Every now and then my computer shuts itself off..
I found this in the events log

The kernel power manager has initiated a shutdown transition

any idea what I can do to correct this?

I don't know, Winfrey.
I did a Google search for that error message, and there seem to be a lot of theories about what can cause it. One person said the fan on his graphics card had stopped, causing the card to overheat and shut down the computer. Someone else decided it was a flaky power button on the computer case. So it seems like a lot of things can cause it.

I saw quite a few references to malware too. Be sure to run all your scans. This is on a Windows 8 computer.

Winfrey,

You just had to start this thread to get symmetry with Volkana's thread where the computer starts itself.
wink

If this is a desktop computer, open it and make sure there is no accumulation of dust on any fans or heat sinks. Overheating will cause cpus to reduce clock rate and turn off if they get hot enough.
You can get programs that will monitor internal temperatures and keep logs.

Get the free Speccy from the same people who make CCleaner. I use it all the time...

Don't worry about rpms... look at the temps. I don't think you have any issues with your hardware on this new computer, but it never hurts to check. Your case has some of the best cooling available.

I saw a event log this evening stating that the computer could not come back from hibernate.. I don't have hibernate on. This is weird.

Being a new computer doesn't mean something wasn't installed correctly. So time ago I read an article talking about a CPU which wasn't installed correctly. There was a thermal goo which went under, or over the heat sink, I forget which, which hadn't been put on correctly. It seemed whoever slathered on the goo didn't put enough and the CPU was overheating, shutting down the computer.

I don't know if this is your problem, Winfrey, but it might be something to look into.

So would I have to open the computer? Would I be able to tell as I have never built a computer?

I wouldn't touch the computer or open it up. You might void the warranty. Something like that happened to my sister. I would call the warranty dept. Maybe they can help you beings they are the ones that built it.
