We are thinking of getting a wifi extender. Any comments regarding what y'all are using? We have a Linksys E2000 router.

Edit... I also have a win 7 and 8.1 computer and have read there might be trouble with 8.1 finding drivers ???

I've never been too keen on using wireless extenders, they actually degrade your overall network throughput. Also if you're using a router that supports dual band (like that E2000) try to avoid using the 5 GHz band, it just doesn't have the same range, and at least in my experience, is subject to interference.

All my devices (including TV's & Streaming receivers) connect to a single router, and I've never had range issues.

Here's an article that explains it pretty well -

The Wire Cutter

If you don't absolutely need WiFi to be extended, Rosaboobie was able to extend her internet connection in her cottage with those thick stone walls by using a power line ethernet system. Her computer is located too far away from her router, so she extended an ethernet connection using to the computer room using two of these devices.

Yup, that's it. It worked for Rosaboobie when nothing else would in her stone cottage. Check Newegg for what they have. Keep in mind it is ethernet, not WiFi.

Keep in mind these wont work if plugged into a powerstrip. They must be plugged into a wall outlet.

.Ok I think I understand. Something like this that does not have wifi and I need two..plugging one into the wireless router and the otherone into the room and computer in the room where we are having problems.
powerline
one guestion.....they show standard...IEEE802.3u. Aren't our computers 802.11a, 802.11b/g/n, and are all ethernet plugs RJ-45 Ethernet Port.

Or...are there some where you only use one and it works for the whole house?

The Netgear you linked to above is strictly RJ-45 ethernet. Any of the 802.11x numbers refers to WiFi. The 802.3u means this is the Fast Ethernet standard.

RJ-45 is the ethernet protocol - it is the plug that sort of looks like a telephone jack plug, but a bit larger. You might have a blue or yellow cable with the RJ-45 plug on the end to plug into the back of your computer. All of which means this is a WIRED internet connection.

Do you mean do you need two of the powerline modules? If so, then yes... for instance the Netgear you linked two has two modules. Like you said above, you plug your router into one and the computer in the other room where you are having problems into the other one. As Geo says, they must be plugged directly into a wall socket.

That's a nifty little gadget Drac. The last time I saw these, and if I'm not mistaken I still have them boxed up somewhere, their performance was somewhat less than stellar. But by the specs of these, it appears they've come a long way.

It sure beats running cable to your access point, especially if you've got Stone walls smile

I have a couple of people I was setting up new computers for and there were some concerns about the reach of the WiFi, so I had done some research on them and they sure seemed to sound good. Turned out we didn't need them, but I did suggest them to Rosaboobie on her remote island off the northern coast of Scotland. She had a several hundred year old stone cottage with exterior walls two feet thick and some main interior walls made of stone too. She said it worked like a charm for her.

Unfortunately I will not be able to tell you if this would have worked. What I did not realize was that I needed a spare ethernet port to use... duh.... all my ports are in use. So back to Newegg it goes. (and no I do not have an extra outlet to plug an additional ethernet hub .... drats!
