Hmmm... I have never gotten popups. I just went there and no matter how hard I tried to get one, I never did. And I tried going to different pages on the site and still didn't get any popups. I don't have Adblock or any other popup blockers on my browsers.

I've only checked the main page so I can't say if there are popups anywhere else but I didn't get any on the main page either, Drac.
(I do, however, use Ghostery.)
Could it have anything to do with your browser of choice, Jenny?

GOG's website designers don't care how the site looks in my older version of Opera..
The prices are all off-center, as is 'owned', and the text beside the games on the left is large and truncated.

Well, poop on them.
For various reasons, I'm sticking with Opera 12.whatever and poop on GOG if (like a number of others) they think they can dictate what browser or version of it I use.

Poop on them anyway.
That grey text on a grey background is making my eyes burn.

Edit: Oh, Marian, you have lots of marbles!
Bright, colorful ones, too!
I'd pick mine up in a minute if I had any idea where they'd gone. grin

Gil.

My version of Opera - 23, I think - shows everything just fine. And no popups there either.

No pop ups for me with IE or MSN Explorer. If the "tool bar" is what I think you mean, that doesn't bother me in the least. The only thing is the gray on gray. That is a little hard on the eyes. And yes, the one side of the main screen is washed out looking. Otherwise, it works for me!

Not popups in the usual sense. Junk that appears when you mouse over it.
Interesting that most are gone today, so maybe they're still tweaking the website.
I'm only seeing something like them now when I mouse over "GAMES" in the toolbar, where they were connected with other webpage links the last time I visited -- when they were definitely not limited to the toolbar.

But the site still has ugly colors.

I sent GOG a support ticket last night to let them know that their site is not only pretentious, boring and drab, AFAIC, but the text on the left is too large and truncated in my browser and on the right...it just plain ain't there.
There is no text at all beside any of those tiny game icons on which it is next to impossible to read the name.

Edit: And now I can't even post in the forums.
A reply page comes up totally blank with a little icon circling...and circling...and circling.
I gave up after two minutes.
Whether that has anything to do with my browser, I don't know yet.
It may just be another site glitch making itself known.

More fun from GOG.

Gil.

I agree. And I'm glad that you wrote to GOG, telling them what you think about the changes to their website. If they get enough feedback that is less than positive, perhaps they will consider making some adjustments.

Thanks, both of you.
I'm not feeling very optimistic at the moment.

I've just had a look over the new GoG site and I can see where they're coming from. The re-design is very much in the mode of a lot of modern sites where accessibility to the content when using mobile devices (tablets or phones). We're doing very similar things to our sites at work.

The driving feature is making the content work on a small touch screen, whilst not breaking the desktop PC version. In my opinion, they've actually done a reasonably good job, assuming you're using an up-to-date browser version. Though I do agree that their choice of colours is a little ... muted ... for my taste.

If you're not using an up-to-date browser, you better have a bl**dy good reason, because older browsers are
  • slower performers,
  • less secure (sometimes significantly so),
  • support HTML 5 poorly or not at all (so you'll miss out on modern web-site functions), and
  • an absolute pain-in-the-butt to people who's professional life is seriously hampered by people who stick to IE 7 (or similar) like me.

The longer you stick with an old browser, the poorer your experience of the web will be, and the more likely you are to suffer from malware. That's the long and short of it.

And traveler, I'm afraid if you stick with Opera 12 out of some mis-guided opposition to the Chromium engine, you're right there with the IE 7 crowd... but in a much smaller boat, where business managers will never want to justify the effort of testing for compliance with your old browser (let alone actually fixing any issues found) because it'll be for such a small percentage of the customer base. (See http://www.w3counter.com/globalstats.php if you think I'm wrong)

Never mind. Linux version 12.16 is the current version of Opera, but the Windows version has a different numbering system.

Jenny,
Would you rephrase that?
I'm afraid I didn't understand you at all.
What does Linux have to do with Opera?

Gil.

Gremlin, it's good to hear from someone who has to deal with this in the real world.

Not that I use it, but I think my version of Opera is 23 or something like that.

You might as well ask what Windows or Mac have to do with Opera.
Current version of Opera for Linux is version 12.16
Current version of Opera for Mac is version 24.0.1558.53
Current version of Opera for Windows is version 24.0.1558.53

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opera_%28web_browser%29

I'd give you links to the download lists at the Opera website, but the opera.com website is giving me bad gateway errors at the moment so the links wouldn't work.

Okay, thanks, I've got you now.

Drac, I think you'll find that the complaints about GOG in the forum have very little to do with 'my' version of Opera and many of them are coming from people with mobile devices.

Oh, Gremlin...misguided?
This from someone who uses IE7 (or similar)? grin

Gil.
