Ok. I'm enjoying this game. However, have come to the part re: the phone password. I've looked at some books, but Nancy doesn't say anything if I'm on the right path. Also compared scavenger note with phone. Do I have to go back to the cemetery again and re-read the epitaphs? sp? Thanks for any help.

Hi Laurette, I moved your post from Discussions forum to here.

Did you call and speak to Addison about this yet?

There seem to be quite a few steps to this part, looking at MaG's walkthrough. If you think you might have missed a book, I'd suggest having a peep at the WT to double check. Check also if there are any epitaphs that you haven't seen yet.

Rushes: I did call Addison. Just wish Nancy would say something so I knew I was on the right track. Thanks.

I have gone back to the books, the cemetery and talked to the man in the cemetery again. Is there any way I can tell if I'm making progress? This is SO frustrating - just when I was really getting into the game. Nancy never says a thing, nor are there are showings of what has been done and what not.

Thank you, before I go bald!

P.S. Have referred many times to the w/t.

If you;re playing Amateur, what is stated on your to do list?
That should show you what else you need to do.

Have you been to the far right area that has tombstones, also fountain, crypt and statue?

Thanks for helping (I need it!)

Have you also looked at the tombstone that says fifty-four souls?

yes. And, told the reason by the man (can't remember his name) in the cemetery.

I figured out the epitaph/password puzzle on my own, but it took me a while because I was using a wrong tombstone as a reference. Once I got that figured out, I was able to get it.

Well, this is embarrassing! I went back to cemetery, called Bess and talked through everything. Then went back to phone, entered password, and (finally) discovered it had worked! So, have now found coded note and can go from there. I don't know why I didn't realize the password had worked before. Anyway, thanks for all the help everyone.

P.S. This IS a GOOD game!

Well, I'm back. Followed paths to find Ethelsgrave. Then went to cemetery to talk to Wade (per w/t).w/t says he will recite the rhyme to call Charlotte. He doesn't. Where did I go wrong? Thanks.

This game isn't strictly linear so things may occur in a different order from that of the walkthrough. If you are playing in Amateur mode, I would take a look at the task list and see what there is to work on. I don't think you have gone wrong.

Hi again. Found all letters from portraits and obtained coded words. However, when I try to rearrange the letters, all I get is a down arrow, which takes me away from it. Thanks for any help.

You need to click-hold on a letter and then slide it onto the other letter you want replaced.

It won't let me. All I get is a "down" arrow, which takes me out of the screen.

Has Nancy said that she has found all of the letters for the anagrams?

I'm not sure, but all the letters are there, as shown in the w/t.

Realized had one more to go. Thanks again.

Here is what the strategy guide says about this part of the game:

Click to reveal..
Before you left Harper, she gave you a piece of paper. Look at the Portrait Letters note in your inventory. The spaces on the page have something to do with the paintings throughout the house. Return to the table in the tool room where you created the battery with oranges. Examine the right side of the table and pick up the rolled canvas. It's the painting of Franklin Thornton from upstairs. Insert Franklin's portrait back into the frame. Use the cleaner-soaked napkin in your inventory on every portrait in Thornton Hall (there are 7). If you find all of them, the Portrait Letters note will be filled in with anagram letters. If you're short on letters, look for Beauregard Thornton's portrait under the stairs and Jackson Thornton's portrait in the second floor hallway. Nancy will tell you when you found all of the letters for the anagrams. Use your hand cursor to rearrange the letters.

Let us know. I have read of no reports of glitches with this game; I am not sure why you are only getting a down arrow if you have all the letters.

I don't have a saved game for this - but MaG's walkthrough has a picture of the solution. Have you tried following that?

Meanwhile, I can tell you that the saved games are located in a folder called Ghost of Thornton Hall in My Documents.

Thanks, Marian. Somehow (gasp!), I managed to solve it. I found, once I got the X's in the right place, it worked.
