Opinions will vary, but I'm happy with Avast - I use the free version.

I use Windows Security Essentials. So far no problems with it. I also have Malwarebytes (the best anti-spyware app out there.)

Regards,

Barry

I'd like to add my 2cents about this virus stuff. I don't get the point of these hackers picking on the little guy like you and me and killing our computers. What does it prove to shut the little guy down. I guess I could see some kind of sick ego trip to try and shut a big company down, perhaps they felt they were un-fairly fired at some point in their life and they view it as some kind of payback but what do they get out of me? Other than the FBI virus that asked for money no other virus has ever seemed to have a purpose.I know these guys are smart to come up with these intelligent viruses so why don't they take their talents to real companies and use them for legit purposes and make money that way? Many companies would like to have someone that smart! I just don't get it.

Edit: I am not talking about the ones that hijack your browser to send you to their website or ones like that,I am talking about the serious ones that disable the computer.

Are you looking for a free antivirus or a pay antivirus?
Also, is this for your Windows 8 computer or your XP?

The answer to your question may vary depending on whether you're looking for a free antivirus or not, because some of the free ones don't do a good job removing viruses while the pay versions work fine.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free download for Windows 7 and Vista. But on Windows 8, Security Essentials has been renamed to Windows Defender and is part of Windows (Defender on Windows 7 and earlier was a different program). So with a Windows 8 computer, all you need to do is make sure it's running and has been updated. I've noticed that Security Essentials updates daily by default, while Windows Defender on Windows 8 notifies me that it needs updating through the security icon in the taskbar, but doesn't update automatically.

I think Draclvr often uses Security Essentials (called Defender on Windows 8) along with MalwareBytes on the computers she services, which is what Barry is doing.

If you're looking for a low price solution, this works well. The pay version of MalwareBytes is $24.95 per year

They have a free version with links to both on their homepage

Here is the difference between the free and pay versions:

Most are downloads, but you'd have to check with individual stores to see what they carry in disks.
