I haven't seen a new book thread in awhile so I thought I'd start one. I generally do not have much time to read, but while recuperating from surgery I had read a wonderful release of a new series called McCormick Files and I am now eagerly awaiting the next one. Since we have so many avid readers here I thought I'd share my find. The author is Lisa Brunette and the book is called Cat in the Flock; it is Book 1 of the McCormick Files. It is available on kindle here. It's an easy read, and the lead character has a unique talent which pulled me right in. The reviews are great too! An interesting tidbit for casual gamers regarding the author, which is actually how I discovered her: She's the writer behind hundreds of bestselling computer games published by Big Fish, such as the Final Cut, Mystery Case Files, Mystery Trackers, Dark Tales, Myths of the World, and Off the Record series. What are you reading? Ana

My latest 'read' (audio book) is Stephen King's The Talisman. Very interesting. Slow moving story but it keeps you waiting for the 'shoe to drop' and finally wrap up what the whole thing has been about. Only 8 more discs to go out of 24. Whew.

Charles Palliser’s “The Quincunx” is one of the best books I have read in years! If you like adventure games, you will LOVE this!....puzzles upon puzzles, mystery etc.!

Had this series for awhile but just getting around to reading them: Dean Koontz's Frankenstein series. Sorta Blond; when you finish the Talisman, you should get "Black House" which is the sequel, it's fantastic.

Rescuing Riley, Saving Myself I recently finished this amazing book by Zachary Anderegg. It is the true story of a young man who rescues a dog from an almost impossible situation in a slot canyon. The dog is near death and he is fighting time to get him out. The struggle to save the dog begins to pull him into his struggles to save himself from a childhood of bullying and misery. I had seen the story of the rescue of the dog on Facebook and just had to read the rest of the story. It's a painful look at the effects that bullying can have on someone for their rest of their lives. But the book ends on a note of hope and happiness.

Oh thanks judith! Had no idea there was a sequel. Hope it doesn't have 24 discs like this one. I'll be on the lookout for it.

I just started rereading The Shell Seekers, by Rosamunde Pilcher. I have several of her books but this is my favorite. It is a story of one family over 3 generation. Wonderful story and a great read.

I am reading James Patterson's The Postcard Killings on Kindle Fire. Drac, that book sounds like one I would really like to read.

I wonder if I can "lend" it to you on the Kindle. That's where I do all my reading - well, I do it on my Surface tablet in the Kindle app. Let me check.
EDIT: Nope, the author does not allow lending on this book.
While on my Kindle books page, I saw another series that I can't get enough of. The first book is "The Oldest Living Vampire Tells All" by Joseph Duncan. “My legal name where I currently reside in the city of Liege, Belgium, in the year 2010 A.D., is Gaspar Valessi, but that is not my real name. The name I was given some 30,000 years ago, when I was born in a Paleolithic settlement in the region that is now called Germany-- the name my father gave me shortly after I was voided, bloody and howling, from my mother's womb-- is Gon.”
Once again, weeds are my life!

Gads! For some reason this thread got me thinking about a lady who lived in a tiny CA town where my Dad had a church. When I got engaged, in 1974, we went to her house and she was telling us about being related to Margaret Mitchell (of Gone with the Wind fame). She had a signed copy of the book, passed down from the family. Can't remember if she was a niece or what. She was probably about 50-60 at the time. I guess I just got wrapped up in Books I'd read and thought of that little tidbit. But the interesting part is that while we were in her dining room, she went to a large china cabinet, which was filled with all sorts of shiny goodies and took out a crystal 'pickle dish' as she called it. It was about 5x7 and oval (boat shaped) and delicately engraved with some sort of flowers. It was my FIRST wedding gift and I have it carefully packed somewhere in my shed. Geez. Gotta go drag that out. Amazing how one little thought brings up something long forgotten! Out to dig in my box marked 'crystal dishes'. Gotta find that one and admire it. AND then look up the lady and see if she is still alive and kicking. I'll have the info in my Dad's old stuff. Gonna be a 'hunt' day.
Edit: I take it back. Got the author wrong. Not Margaret Mitchell. Found the dish, found the name of the lady who gave it, and she was a relation of Jessamyn West (also an author). It makes sense now since the lady's name was 'West'. Ha. Memory jogged. And the little paper I'd included when I 'stored' it said that it was also a wedding present to HER. Wow. Gotta be a very old dish. Now that I have no more Indoorsies, I can display it without fearing massive breakage. I remember now that I'd put away all of my delicate stuff when I had the kittens born in 1996.

Drac, can you pm if the dog dies. Sounds like a book I'd like, but so often in dog books, the dog dies and I try to avoid that as it leaves me a sobbing mess.
Space, I have enjoyed other Brent Weeks series...will have to look into that one.

I have no problem posting in the public forum, l4l - Riley does not die and you know that early in the book.
I use the Kindle lending library all the time! But some authors do not allow you to lend your own books. I also use my public library Kindle lending program.

looney, if you enjoyed The Night Angel trilogy I think you will like the Lightbringer books. Book one is The Black Prism and you can read three sample chapters on brentweeks.com . My guess is that you will be hooked after chapter two.
It's nice to be important but it is much more important to be nice.

I'm currently reading "Vicky Peterwald, Target", by Mike Shepherd. It's indirectly part of the Kris LongKnife series. It can be read as a stand alone but references will make better sense if the Kris Longknife books have been read in order.
