A few weeks ago I was browsing on Google and came across a page giving advice to Americans on visiting Europe and in particular the UK. While some basic advice was good other Do’s and Don’ts made me smile.
I got to thinking that the friendships we have established over the years on Gameboomers could be so helpful when we holiday abroad. For example there are quite a few Brits and on our boards and their advice could be very helpful, (after all we live here) to Americans spending a vacation over here and of course to us holidaying on the other side of the pond.
Of course you can choose a conducted tour where everything is taken care of but the downsides are that they operate on a fairly tight schedule rushing you from one tourist site to another. Personally having taken one once I wouldn’t repeat the experience, I much prefer the freedom to explore for myself
London is the prime choice for many Americans visiting the UK which is understandable as you could stay for six months and scarcely see half on what’s on offer. I was born in London and lived there until my late twenties so I know most of the pros and cons.
But London itself is not England and I think it would be a pity not to experience the lovely countryside, especially in late June or July. If you have no qualms about driving I would really consider renting a car and a country cottage, they are splendid value for money and if there are two couples you can share the cost per pair for seven nights in a gorgeous thatched cottage in the Cotswolds, Shakespeare country and London is under an hour away by train (Never drive in London) then use the Tube. Nearly all the tourist attraction’s are within easy walking distance from a Tube station.
Sorry I am rambling on.
