If you are talking about the disc version from 2008,then no it doesn't need Internet.

If you're talking about the Big Fish version, that does need Internet.
So does the Steam version.

I don't really know why the game would try to get to the Internet.
It might have something to do with the PhysX drivers that Frogwares likes to use with their games. The PhysX drivers should install with the game, but they may be looking for an update (don't let them get an update because the current 2014 PhysX doesn't work with the game).

I checked my game, and the first disc has the PhysX_7.09.13_SystemSoftware.exe file inside the support folder.

I suppose it could also be TAGES looking for an update.
The disc version used TAGES copy "protection."

Does the game work? Or does it keep trying to access the Internet?
Does it try to open a web browser and take you to a website?

Maybe someone else who's played the game on XP more recently than I have can tell you what the blank page is about. I don't remember seeing it, but it's been several years since I played the game and I would have forgotten about it if it only appeared the first time I started the game.

You mean it doesn't have a proper icon?
Try going to the game folder and see if you can locate the game executable. Does that have an icon? If it does, try creating your own game shortcut -- right-click the game exe, then move your cursor to "Send to", then move your cursor to the right and click "Desktop (create shortcut)." Once you've made the new shortcut, see if it works to start the game properly.

Usually when you make a desktop shortcut to an executable, the shortcut will pick up the icon that goes with the game executable. However if the game executable doesn't have an icon, you won't get one on the shortcut either.

Where on the internet does it take you? I just installed it on both my Windows 7 and XP computers and it didn't do that for me at all.

Do you mean a blank white square instead of the game icon, not a whole page? That does sound like some kind of malware was on your computer.
