I buy the red coloring from the local super market.

Mc Cormick makes black food coloring. You would add just a little bit to white icing to make gray. You can also add red food coloring to cake mix. Since it doesn't take much, you shouldn't have to alter the cake recipe. Most grocery stores sell food coloring in the aisle where the baking supplies are located.
