I am playing the first game and am stuck. I cannot open the logs to get the bond certificate. Also cannot open the newspapers at Baker Street. Do I need to use the middle button on my track ball to open these? That doesn't seem to work. Your help would be very much appreciated. Thanks Irishem

Click on edge of the page you want to turn - try top right or middle right of the page. Keep us posted.

I can't even get into the logs or newspapers to turn a page.

If you cannot open the logs at the hut or the newspaper at Baker St. - that means you have not triggered it yet.
Be sure that you have examined the bloody notebook inside and out.
Be sure that you have read the inscription in the ring completely.
Be sure that you have checked the missing box on the shelf at the hut.
Interrogate and examine John Neligan in Scotland Yard completely.

I've gone back to try to examine the notebook but get the message "Evidence Required". I've checked where the missing box was, and have examined the ring completely. It will not let me interview Neligan any more. Help please, thanks

I would recommend that you go back to a saved game and replay.
Be sure that examine all of Neligan's belongings at evidence room.
Do Neligan's profile completely.
Interrogate him after noting his clothes and the etching on the ring.
When you do the ring - be sure that you read all what is etched inside that ring until Holmes makes a note of it.

Ok - I have gone back to the beginning of this case and followed the walkthrough completely and am still stuck. I think this game has some major problems. First of all, will not allow me to talk to Mrs. Carey again about her meeting her husband. And what is with the "Q" key - that does nothing. Then will not allow me to ask Neligan about the ring, again whats with "Q" - does nothing. So therefore, still stuck - will not allow me to open the newspapers or the log books. I would like to forget about this case, but how do I go to another case? Your help would be very much appreciated. Irishem

That's the problem.
The Q key is important to continue the interrogation.

From the walkthrough:
Q Key: Immediately click on Q key when it appears to continue the interrogation. Select the topic that corroborate the discussion to continue the investigation.

After pressing the Q key when it appears (it will disappear after a while - so be fast), you will see a set of text at top left of screen.
Select the pertinent clue or evidence to continue the interrogation.

You need to do the Q key with Mrs. Carey also.

I've tried several times with Mrs. Carey. After her character portrait is complete and I try to talk to her again, the only key I get is a Tab key. Irishem

You press your keyboard key - Q. It won't be a Q on the screen.

I had been trying that and nothing happened, so then I assumed the Q showed up on the screen. Will try the keyboard Q again. Thanks, Irishem

Ok, I did finally get the Q key to work with Mrs. Carey but I can't get it to work with Neligan. After asking him about the knife, I do not get the text to ask him about the ring. What do I do now? Thanks, Irishem

It looks like you are missing the triggers.
It would be best to replay and follow the walkthrough.
Do the Q key- the T key mentioned in the walkthrough.
Watch the screen.
The Q key alert is on only for the duration of the appearance of the turning arrow.
Be sure to do the profiles.
