I'm starting to get used to it.  Certainly not what I've been used to but I can say that I haven't had any problems with it yet. I've played a lot of games on it without so much as a peep. My stepdaughter has a Windows 8 laptop and the August Automatic Updates caused it to continuously crash. Once she updated it to 8.1 the problem went away.
Did you ever stop to think and then forget to start again?

Yeah, you definitely need to have 8.1 or the updates won't work. Glad to hear the games are working and that you have a "techie" in the house!
