Well I took the plunge and am now immersed in this game. For a sequel it's much closer to Risen 2 than the original but I kind of like that.
Our nameless hero is a little less nameless in this one as he has now become Patty's brother. (so much for the romantic innuendo between them) I'm not sure that I like what they've done to Patty and Nameless but then again that's just me and my taste.
A lot of the Islands are the same as in the previous one but still different content.
There are a few sea battles scattered about that are a pain in the proverbial ****** to me but some may like those type battles. To me it's just something that I have to put up with in order to continue on in the game.
All in all, if you enjoyed Risen 1 and 2 you should be in for a treat with this one.

Well as an update, I'm really enjoying this game. It's more like a continuation of Risen 2 but now the hero is Patty's brother and he is still nameless. I met the Nameless Hero of Risen 2 and had a conversation with him but he had more important things to do than to join me.
I started over because I wanted to be a mage and there are 3 factions to join and you can only join one. In order to be a mage I had to join a different faction and could not learn mage spells unless I was a member of that particular faction. So I am now in the Guardian faction which basically is the mage faction. The spells are powerful and since they are ranged they are much better for a combat wimp like myself. Some purists say that the game is too easy and that the mage spells make combat too easy but for me you can not make combat easy enough so I like it.
The game plays pretty much like the other two risen games so there is not a big learning curve, if you have played the other two.
I am about two thirds through the game but have missed tons of side quests. Once I finish this play through I will probably do another as a Demon Hunter (which I think probably equates to a Warrior type). Overall I give this game a big yay and would recommend it to any who like the Risen or Gothic games.

I have finished my 3d playthrough of this game and have really enjoyed it. As I previously stated its pretty much like the previous two Risen games and almost like a continuation of Risen 2. There are several islands that were visited in Risen 2. The reason for my 3 playthroughs was that there are 3 factions you can join, and of course you can only join one. Your combat style though doesn't change no matter which faction you join. You can basically use the same spells and melee or ranged style no matter which faction. You just can only learn spells related to your faction but can buy scrolls or runes that accomplish the same thing. Although rather pricey you get a lot of play for your bucks. Now it's time for me to catch up on some of my adventure games while I wait for DA Inquisitor which is due out in a month and Witcher 3 which has been postponed again until Feb 2015. (Hard to imagine I am typing 2015 When it seems like only yesterday that 1996 was a long way off. Oh well,,,,,,,,,,,,time marches on)

EDIT :Yeah !!!! Found one !!!! ******************************************* Well, I was hoping to buy a DVD version of this game but I can't find one anywhere !!. Not even for sale as "used" The only version I can see for PC is a download requiring play via Steam - and £40 for a download seems mightily excessive to me Going off to go sulk in a corner now
