Many words have more than one meaning. For instance, 'set' can mean a division of a tennis game, to lay the table with crockery, or to solidify. This quiz asks you which one word can replace three or more words or phrases in the question.

-1.Harry thought the Papal edict about red balloons, purple crustaceans and a male ox was a load of nonsense. He followed it despite his misgivings as his faith was fairly robust. 4 letters

2.Ron, you see that spare blade of an oar over there? If it's no longer than a linear measure based on the size of a hand, stealthily thieve it so we can take it home with no authority noticing. 4

-3.There was barely a scintilla of evidence proving Shirley could determine her family's ancestors back to William the Conqueror. Shirley tried to draw the family tree in her daughter's sandpit but it was far too windy. 5

-4.Glen needs to fill in the blank document with spaces for answers so he can register his son at the local high school in the correct grade. At school, his son will learn how to shape mud into bricks and build a house suitable for a family. 4

-5.I'd like to purchase fabric for an awning to provide protection from the sun. I think the price is a fraction too high, but for awning material in a perfect, though much maligned hue of charteuse, I'll happily pay top dollar. 5

-6.Rachel, you'll have to move that wardrobe if you want to find your loose-fitting beltless dress. Hurry up. If you don't find it soon, you'll be late for your rostered hours at work in the coffee shop. 5

-7.The military compound has many buildings which contain a structural member with a heavy bottom. The bottom is made of a substance which will react with an acid, the result being the creation of a salt and some water. 4

-8.After you're sewn on a piece of fabric to cover the rip in your bomber jacket, please connect one radio operator through to the other operator. The second operator has the repair code we need to fix the malfunction in the computer's programme. 5

-9.David, please place the salve on the table with the off-white tablecloth. We are having the pick of the crop eat with us tonight and I want everything looking marvellous, for they are very fastidious. 5

-10.Penelope the poodle was in trouble. After lapping up all the bouillon, she went into the garden and dug up the fragrant European plant with purple, white or pink flowers her owner adored. Her owner has a good supply of dog biscuits for Penelope when she's a good girl but her reputation with the neighbours was fading after digging up their gardens! 5

Sometimes lost is where you need to be. Just because you don't know your direction doesn't mean you don't have one.
