I don't know. It may depend on the brand of cartridges.
Did you check the cartridges to see if they are indeed empty?
Were the cartridges the name brand?
Also, did you check the date on the cartridges?

Is it the HP software saying they are out of ink? If so, just ignore it and keep using them and see what happens. It could be that you are getting a false message.

That's not right.. Even when I use my cartridges until they are bone dry, the print doesn't get fuzzy. Could there be a leak? I don't know anything about ink cartridges, but maybe you got some bad ones...

I found this which might be relevant :

Your printer may be printing fuzzy, blurry, or other faint text because of dirty print heads. All modern printers have some printer cleaning, self-test, or diagnose mode that can be performed to check and clean the printers print heads and other internal equipment used to print. It is recommended if you use your printer heavily or have had it for more than one year that you perform this function. This can be done either through the software included with your printer or by pressing one or more of the buttons at the same time on your printer. Additional information about how to do this can be found in your printers documentation.

I used to have to do this type of cleaning occasionally when I had my dot matrix printer but I expect it can still be relevant smile
