They have indeed lost pets, stolen pets, pets have died etc. It is a risk you take when you let anything out of your sights. Obviously, the odds are in your favor that it will go well or they wouldn't be shipping any at all.

Just a thought. The stress on an animal, crated and dumped in the belly of the beast, with all the strange noises and temperatures going up and down and no 'safe' spot to hide just makes me cringe. I've heard way too many stories of animals getting 'loose' and running all over the airport. Some are found, some not. If it were my pet, I'd vote a resounding no! Leave the pet with a good friend or have someone come to your home to care for it. Familiar surrounding are the best. We 'kenneled' our cat once and had to come home early when they called to say he was not eating and they thought he was dying. Sure enough, he was so bad that if we hadn't canceled our trip, we probably would have lost him. They had taken away his 'box' and his 'blankie' and he was in a stark cage huddled in the back corner shaking. When he saw us and heard our voices, he immediately perked up and an hour later, was eating and back to almost normal. No more leaving a pet anywhere strange for me.

WARNING! This person is extremely blonde...please type SLOWLY.
