A friend here has a husky type dog that she thinks the world of. So she decided to give her an extra treaty type meal and cooked up a chicken. She then gave Bear the whole chicken, minus the bones of course. A day or so later Bear became quite ill and was diagnosed with pancreatitis due to the excess fat in the chicken, mainly the skin. Bear is okay now but has to be on a very low fat/no fat diet.
Please be careful how much fat your dog is getting.

Mine get no table food except raw veggies, so no worries here. Mine get sick even if it's a non fatty piece of meat. Thanks for the reminder and I hope the dog will be okay! puppy

It can happen to cats too. Mine loved lunch meat. I fed him tons of bologna and then he got lethargic and laid on his side and just howled. Vet said too much richness in people food, and the fat content and the preservatives too and SALT. He gave me a pill, something like Pepto Bismol and that cured him. He said the cat had a tummy ache. Simple explanation for a more complicated diagnosis. Cat recovered and lived to be 14.

No people food for pets, exp fatty or salty, or preserved stuff.

Hi Trippy

she gave Bear the whole chicken? how big was it?
I've cooked chicken for my dogs for years, I boil it and take the skin off and they get a small dinner of it, I've never had any problems with it~
I hope I don't regret my words~

Actually, boiled lean chicken with all fat and skin removed is part of one of the recipes recommended by Dr. Fox who has some great recipes for home-made dog food.

People food that has too much fat, salt, seasonings and preservatives is not good for our pets - their livers can't handle it.

Clearly not all dogs are alike. My aunt bought two whole cooked chickens from a takeout and had them on the counter to cool. When she came back a few minutes later, there was no sign of the chickens, just a few shreds of paper from the wrappings on the floor. Even the bones were gone. Dog was fine, and ever since then my aunt has to be careful what she puts on the counter or the dog will get into it.

My two Great Danes used to have a whole chicken each (pressure cooked with bones and all) for their tea quite often. And they never suffered any after effects .... except enjoyment !! grin

I never gave them "roast" chicken though.

Of course, it could just also be that different breeds have different constitutions think

Hopefully the pressure cooking softened up the bones. Chicken bones are notorious for splitting and puncturing internal organs. My friend that works at a vet clinic said that despite all the warnings about chicken bones, they still do a lot of surgeries to repair internal damage done by chicken bones. Probably the sheer size of a Great Dane would be enough to let it pass through without damage.

What I understand is that the size of the dog is most important with the breed following close behind for consuming a lot of fat and salt. The smaller they are, the worse it is for their little livers and kidneys.

I gave my first Chihuahua a chicken leg a day and she snacked on the cat food. lol Course the skin and fat came off when cooked. Even I don't eat the skin since that is where all the fat is. She had no problems till she was 14 and then she got breast cancer.

I very cautious what I feed my dogs. I will give them veggies except for corn since they're not able to digest the skin. As well as raw carrots, mainly to help clean their teeth, though again raw carrot pieces are usually passed. I know Shannon gave Honey a whole fried chicken. But her dogs is doing fine now.

Yes. The bones were actually "non existent" as bones after pressure cooking. I certainly wouldn't have allowed them to eat the chickens otherwise. And salt was never added to anything I cooked for them.

But both dogs would also consume full size rose bushes whole - thorns, roots and all - given half a chance. Also with no after effects.

Each dog weighed in at 210Lbs so I can certainly say that they were BIG !! laugh

Our lab from my first marriage ate a kitchen towel soaked in cooking grease. We used it to clean up fat and grease from the drip tray on the grill and it disappeared. About two years later the dog was sick and after heaving and heaving he upchucked the towel intact. We recognised the vague pattern still on it. lol

I wonder if swallowing towels and socks would limit the appetite? Maybe I'll try that on my next diet. rotfl
