Does your video card meet the minimum requirements to play this game?

The minimum system requirements are:
CPU: Intel Core2 Duo or equivalent AMD RAM:4 GB RAM VGA: DirectX9c compliant card with 512MB of VRAM DX: 9.0c OS:Windows XP SP3 or higher HDD: 9 GB available space Sound: DirectX9c compliant
The most important one is the VGA or video requirements. If you have an integrated video chip, it will be difficult to play without stuttering. If you don't know what your video chip is, just do a DXDIAG and that will tell you. I don't know what operating system you have, but if you can post that info, that will help.
You can always try going into the game options and turning down all the video to the lowest settings too. But if you have shared video RAM, it might not help all that much.

What operating system are you using?
If it's Windows 7, just click on Start and then type DXDIAG in the search box. Click on the search result and let it run. Click on the Display tab and that should tell you what video chip you have.

It might as long as it has 512 MB of VRAM. Have you tried turning down the video settings? Perhaps the fix Ewil02 has posted will work too.

Hello Robert I recently played The Vanishing of Ethan Carter on quite a powerful system with Windows 7, but I could not even run the game without setting the antialiasing setting to its lowest possible. There is a screen upon loading that allows you to alter many of the technical options. Try setting these all lower and see if it will run OK. It is a very resource hungry game. Regarding the lack of a manual - I beef I had with it, too - there is a Commented Gameplay video by one of the game designers on the official website ( http://ethancartergame.com/) which takes you through the start of the game showing you both how the controls work (these can be modified from the in-game menu) and giving you an idea of how to play the game and what it's about. If I say any more I'll spoil it for you. It is definitely not your average linear style adventure game and has some very unusual features. I enjoyed it very much, and I hope you do, too. Elen

The game uses a combination of keyboard and mouse. The controls are listed on this page.
