This is soooo embarrassing rolleyes I seem to be at a standstill at least for now. I have been to the tavern - gotten the bottle of wine and given it to the oriental guy in the town square who told me about the widow. Went to her house and all she does is yell at me to not touch anything. I've been to all the locations I can find but am obviously missing something (how's that for an austute observation) laugh

In inventory I have the axe, mug and coins. I've been to the docks, seen my x-ship, been told to shove off by the guy at the other ship, tried to go under the bridge but it smells funny, can't give poor Hank his cigar because the bartender won't let me take one (the nerve) <img border="0" alt="woozy" title="" src="graemlins/woozy.gif" />

Help please

Syd, you must click on the cloth in the oriental dealers table. If you do this, he will sell it to you. I am sure someone is looking for some nice cloth. You can't get the cigar because the tavern owner needs to get distracted, I wonder what you could do for that? Maybe starting a fight might help.

HI, have you been to the Widow's country estate? Have you bought the men wrestling a bottle of wine? Have you knocked over the little jug that is on their table? Have you got the cloth from the vendor, its on the right on the table? Hope this helps. wave

Well that was fun while it lasted rolleyes I've talked to the guy under the bridge, know about the stranger in the black cloak, talked to the widow, hank and oriental guy in square. Know the guy went on The Stork. Can't get any info from the two guys arm wrestling in the tavern. I did read that you need to buy them a drink - okay - how? Jazz won't sit down - says he doesn't need to buy anything - "oh, yes you do" I'm hollering at him (to no avail I might add) and I can't get the bartender to reappear. How do I buy these two fine gentlemen a drink so they spill their guts? And how much money am I supposed to have? I had two small bags of coins at the start - now I seem to only have one. Am I in financial trouble here? <img border="0" alt="pacify" title="" src="graemlins/pacify.gif" />

Nah, you're not in trouble. I think I walked up to the waitress with the money bag from my inventory on screen, and the cursor became the moving/interact-with-item hammer thingee. Then I clicked on the waitress and bought a bottle of wine. Then I put the wine out on screen from inventory, and clicked on the twins and they graciously took the wine and helped me out.

You know, it's quite fun to play this game along with everybody else <img border="0" alt="woozy" title="" src="graemlins/woozy.gif" /> - kinda lends a sense of community to things, hunh? laugh

Syd, I need help as well. I can't seem to find out what to do, after I learn that the stanger left on the stork. I am not able to even enter to the cemetary or do anything else yet.

Hello there Lundar, fancy meeting you here!

Where are you now? Have you gone under the bridge to see the bum there, cut the rope next to him down with your axe, then poured the (fountain) water in your mug on him to waken him? Show him hat & Bottle you found outside country house and take the rag from under the bridge too before you leave the tramp. Then go to bar and click money on waitress to get bottle of wine for wrestlers; they'll tell you about black-cloaked guy that came from magician's doorway, and that triggers you to be able to go see magician. Then you should be able to get into the cemetary.

Hope that helps!

Hi Syd,
You won't be able to get the ladder or the basket on the balcony until you cover the lantern on the porch of the widow's country house, and you won't be able to do that until you've heard conversation coming from within that house, other than Jazz repeating over and over again about the policemen inside. I know how you feel about the ladder. I began wishing that the grandfather broke his neck. eek

I have the harpoon, rag [which I'm about ready to stuff down Jazz's throat], but no cage nor gravestone fragments.

And yes that's the same thing I keep hearing - about the not butting in. Did you go back and try to break into the widow's house twice? The first time she threatens to scald you with water lol, but the second time she says she is going to call the police. I thought for sure that was the trigger - but nope. Maybe I need to find those other two inventory items you have and try again.

Well we know for sure this is not an XP glitch because I'm playing in W98.

Just got a few pointers from Laura - I'm going to try them and see if it works - I'll get back to you.

Just took a break from working on the contest (twenty pages of entries!!!!). Syd, if that gravestone is too heavy, maybe if you broke it into pieces you could pick it up!

I can't get anything at that bl**$y door but "Police inside"--GRRRRRR

Did I make a mistake when I put the empty lantern down by the lighthouse? Now this idiot game won't let me pick up that jug so I can get some oil!!!!

I haven't put the lantern down anywhere and I can't pick up the jug so that's not it. I thought I needed the lantern to see down the well so I'm still lugging it around lol

Break the gravestone you say? Wonder what I use - yeeesh - where the heck is a sledge hammer when you need one????

Anything heavy will do, luv!

I did manage to get the lantern muffled at the widow's country house, but now I need some light for that well and I still can't pick up that jug! Oh the pain of it all........

Hey Syd,

There is a small pile of sneaky cannonballs in that big, white building-ed area that leads to the port, the pier, and the lighthouse. They're sorta near the cannon but down low I think. They're pretty heavy when thrown, doncha think?

Naw, I went back to earlier saves and tried not plunking down the empty lantern by the lighthouse, and not picking up the empty cage down on the right at that port/pier area, so my inventory would be different when I went to the well/country house area. It didn't help. I tried it too with and without making the harpoon from the fence lance you get from the cemetary (Jazz automatically combines it with the rope you already have in inventory). Nothing helped. Maybe we missed something talking to somebody during the day?

I thought I still had daytime saves left, but they're all nighttime- rats. I notice the widow just yells at me now, and the market vendor is asleep so I can't talk to him.

Alaska said the door suddenly changed its tune after a 1/2 hour straight of her clicking on it and going up and down the stairs with Jazz, without her doing anything else differently. It's posted in one of Alaska's J & F threads here somewhere... * Sigh.* No such luck for me so far, though...

Skinnie and Jenny - I got it happydance happydance happydance
Here's what I had to do (thank you Lauralei). go back to the tavern and talk to the two guys arm wrestling - you tell them you can't get on the ship and they tell you only a magician can help you (this is assuming that you tried to get on the Smokey previously) - go up and talk to the magician - he tells you that he will help you but he needs gravestone fragments and a head.

I did figure out to use the cannonball on the gravestone <g> After that I went to the house clicked on the door and heard "there's someone out there" - I jumped over the rails, the cops came out and after they went back in I could cover the lamp.

Beats me - I was so excited to get that dang lantern covered I forgot I needed to do something else <g> I think we need to spear us a head somehow [yuck].

Did you go back and get the ladder and the basket at the widow's? That's where I'm headed next. Is it just me or does Jazz look like an elf from Everquest???? lol

Hate to break it to you, but you still can't get that ladder! Also can't pick up the jug--so how we're supposed to get oil for that lantern is beyond me.....

Hey, I just wandered into the tavern (so Jazz could drown his sorrows lol ) and clicked on the wrestlers by accident while trying to sit on that empty barstool lol ... They cued me to visit the magician again, and wa-la, he told me to go find the head! Whew, hope that does the trick! Glad if I don't have to start over, and I'm glad you got there too Syd.

Off to see a head about a wizard...

You cant get the jug untill you have the gravestone and the speared head and done the puzzle with the gravestone and talked with the magician.Leaving the empty lantern at the lighthouse is ok.Now I know what the empty cage is for!!Kind of funny...

Take the lantern, hang it on the well. Go back to the widow's house. Place the ladder up against the balcony, ring her doorbell, but before she comes out, run....well..crawl..up the ladder and get the basket. Go back to the well, harpoon the head and put it in the basket. Off to the magician's now....

This game is very very linear.

I am actually starting to get the rythym of it. Even though we know we need something the game won't let tou get it, use it or anything til you have triggered it's use or your character in the game knows he needs it.

So don't worry about the oil - or the jug outside the police station you can get it when you need it. The same for the ladder.

After you cover the lantern, look in the well. Duh - it's dark. Now go get the lantern that you covered. Use it. Look in the well. Hmmmmm Use the harpoon - nope need something to put it in - oh duh duh. NOW you can pick up the ladder at the widows house. This game doesn't let you do things just cause you know that's what you are going to have to do later on anyway. Nope - no short cuts here.

So if you see something that looks useful - like oil - don't figure you can use it til someone suggests it and they will more or less. Someone will say - uh we need to get the lighthouse working and then you can get the oil. Arghhhhhhhhh

Sorry - just had to vantilate a tad. laugh

Laura

Whoa. Inventory really changes a lot after that headstone puzzle. The girl's face goes in the middle. The pieces are all stretched away from each other, but they will move in together when you get it right...

I'm baaaaccckkk laugh Finally got that *^%( lantern lit - I wandered around for half an hour looking for Hank only to discover I was led on a wild Hank chase lol.

Now I'm in prison and am stuck. I hope I wasn't supposed to answer whats his face from the ship because I didn't and now I'm locked up and no one for company but this skeleton and he doesn't talk much. I have tried all three things in my inventory on Mr. Bones but nothing works. Am I doomed to his same fate??? (I actually wouldn't mind it if there was a computer in here) happydance

Yeah, I caught that curveball about Hank too. Fortunately, being the lazy sort (and an avid camper) I stayed at the lighthouse and poked through my inventory for the first flint that came to mind wink .

Now that ship area bugged me a tad, because did ya see that big brown rock on the floor at the lower middle of the screen, yup, the one that your cursor stays a plain arrow on when you put your cursor on it? Well, it should change into a *hand* (doesn't though) because if you click on that rock a couple of times, well, you can move it! eek

Like many games I've come across (including the GBA port of Broken Sword, and the action/adventure Darkened Skye), the game gets you all comfy with certain cursor changes when you can interact with something, then once in a while you can still interact with an item but the cursor remains a plain arrow.

Things take off from there.

Me again laugh I have been wandering around Khaen or whatever for the past oh say hour (okay longer than that but I don't want to admit to anyone how el stucko I am). I know I have to get the carpet but for some reason it's hung too high and I can't get the ladder. I also need a veil from the money changing guy but I don't have anything he wants. Can't find anyone else to talk to - seems everyone but the harem guard has split or is happy, happy, happy (and I don't mean the Emeril kind)

Nudge would be appreciated wave

Warning: Spoilers

To get the carpet down you need the poker out of the fire pit in the middle of the Opium Den room. You may have to douse it with water in a barrel right outside the Opium den if it's hot when you get it. At one point I had to give the poker to the sleeping Opium guy and take his "Hookah" (can't begin to tell ya my embarassment about what I thought the standing guy on the left meant when he said he "Wanted a Hookah" but it was some sort of bottle thingee the sleeping guy had); then I had to take the poker back again. Not sure exactly how far along you are or if you already have the poker at all yet. Also, yeah, the Money Changer guy told me a couple of times he'd help me after he finished up his business work, but after coming and going at the Opium den here and there, a new item appeared that wasn't there previously. Then things open up, but I don't think you'll hit that for a little while yet...
