I have tried repeatedly to get the sliders moved to the right place in this puzzle, but no luck in the dome opening. I read and followed the post of 1-23-04 from Jen in Chgo but the button does not open the dome, they just slide back to the left. I am doing everything the post says, same numbers and sequence, but when I push the button, nothing happens. They say the numbers are different with every game. What do they mean different? What are they?

HELP!!

Jeepers, if they state that numbers are different with every game - it means that this is a random puzzle. No solve numbers can be given. You just have to the puzzle the way it is stated to get your own numbers.

Check the journal for the number sequence, move the slider for those number, press the button and have access to the linking book. Then you have to get power to the dome so that the linking book will work.

True.......different numbers for different games. I suppose there is a possibility that you might luck up and get the same numbers as someone else but the odds are probably against you. You have to find out what numbers are necessary in your particular game. laugh

I didn't do it......and if I did I'm not guilty!

After you get into Gehn's lab on Book Assembly Island, find his journal on a table. Here is a paragraph from a WT I wrote for myself:

The square document that you see before you is Gehn’s all-important laboratory journal. Therein is contained much information, most particularly the code for opening the inner part of the rotating domes in the entry for 84.4.14; you must carefully note the five digits of this code corresponding to the Rivenese symbols that you learned from the schoolhouse game (these 5 symbols will be different each time a new game is started). Also in the journal on the page of the entry for 83.9.11 is a series of 6 eyeball-like symbols that the D'ni use to rep-resent the colors of the optical spectrum: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. Problem: the spectrum has 7 colors, there are 6 symbols, the Riven magic number is 5. One of these symbols you have just seen in the rotating dome telescope.

Not quite sure that this is what you want, but you can always ask further.

I didn't write down the codes when I read the journal because I didn't catch that I needed to until I had already closed it. I have tried repeatedly to open the journal to where I could find them, but it won't open past the cover. Is there a secret to making it open again so I can get the codes for the sliders?

Are you sure you're trying to open the right journal? There shouldn't be any problem with opening it as many times as you want to...

Kszanz,
You should be able to open Gehn's journal anytime. Have you tried clicking and dragging the pages?

I really thought I had jotted down the codes; but if I did, I can't seem to find them. That's why I thought I may have not done so. I'll try opening the book one more time. I don't remember having any problem turning the pages the first time, but I can't seem to get them to turn this time. Since I know that you have opened the journal multiple times, then I at least know it should work. Regarding which journal I'm talking about, there was a lab notebook in Ghen's lab. I believe it was located next to the wooden eye. I really believe I'm looking at the correct journal but will make sure now that I know it should work again.

Thanks so much. I'll let you know how I do.

The relevant journal is very definitely a journal and sits right in the middle of his workbench. The code is a set of five D'ni numbers. You will have to work out how to count from 1 to 25 in D'ni in order to figure the code out.

I went back to the lab and discovered that I was at the back of the journal. When I started clicking the left side of the journal, the pages started turning. Duh! I subsequently found the codes but have no idea how to use them. I have gone through the journal multiple times to see if that's what I'm looking for and can't find anything else that fits either. Gehn said he puts codes on the domes and shows these. That has to be them.

One symbol looks somewhat like KI, then a K with a backward h on top of the bottom half, two I's with a v in the middle, etc. How in the world does that convert to the sliders that are just five little bars? It's not like I would be sliding them to certain symbols. There are only ruler marks.

Help!

Those codes are actually numbers--have you been to the schoolhouse? There is a game there that will help you decode them; once that's done, then you can use the sliders...

Hi,

I happen to have a link to a walkthrough that has pictures of the numbers and what they are. Hope this helps you.

I did visit the school and had a feeling the slider codes had something to do with that. I did already have this walkthrough, but I failed to catch the explanation how to use the symbols and numbers. I'll take this home and figure out how to use them once I have time.

Thanks so much.

Kszanz,
Did you play the hangman type game in the schoolroom? A Rivenese number will appear. Just count the clicks to know what number is being displayed. smile
