THey explained it to the backers here: Hi all,
We are delighted to announce that the PC version of Broken Sword 5 - The Serpent’s Curse will be released on December 4th. As backers, you will be able to download the game on the day of release! The exact details about “how” will follow closer to release.
To top that news, the game will be released as two action-packed adventures in close succession. Thanks to your support, we have been able to be hugely ambitious – each episode is a full sized game in its own right. And because we couldn’t have done it without you, everyone from reward level $15 and up will receive both episodes!
The second episode is due for release in January 2014.

I should think all of the backers would get both episodes!
It wasn't our decision to split the game and until this announcement, it was one game.
At least Tesla Effect is coming out as promised.

Well, I don't mind them splitting it up in two. As I see it, I get 2 games, since they said each episode was a full sized game.  I can wait.. I mean, it's only about a month, right?

It is only about a month between the "two games", so why the decision to split it?
The whole thing must be nearly ready to go.
Why would it be such a big deal to bring it out all at once in January instead of December?
I'm serious, I really don't understand the reasoning here.
I think Revolution has some explaining to do to their backers.

Probably just something to do with the actual size of the game.
And with a game that size, they must have needed to polish the last part a little more, so decided to split it.
I know I would have done that, if I was doing it ;-)
