I'm playing it now and taking my time over it.
I, too, was annoyed at the initial difficulty of navigation in the woods and i still can't see how the map helps all that much. I was stuck for ages trying to find my way back to the car and telephone box but it did add to the game atmosphere.
Loving the game, To me it epitomises everything I like about traditional adventure games and the reason I enjoy them.
