We've heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards could produce the complete works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the Internet, we know that is not true.
Robert Wilensky
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
Did You Know?
Q. Why do men's clothes have buttons on the right while women's clothes have buttons on the left?
A. When buttons were invented, they were very expensive and worn primarily by the rich. Since most people are right-handed, it is easier to push buttons on the right through holes on the left. Because wealthy women were dressed by maids, dressmakers put the buttons on the maid's right! And that's where women's buttons have remained since.
Q. Why do ships and aircraft use 'mayday' as their call for help?
A. This comes from the French word m'aidez - meaning 'help me' - and is pronounced approximately, 'mayday.'
Q. Why are zero scores in tennis called 'love'?
A. In France , where tennis became popular, round zero on the scoreboard looked like an egg and was called 'l'oeuf,' which is French for 'egg.' When tennis was introduced in the US , Americans (mis)pronounced it 'love.'
Q. Why do X's at the end of a letter signify kisses?
A. In the Middle Ages, when many people were unable to read or write, documents were often signed using an X. Kissing the X represented an oath to fulfill obligations specified in the document. The X and the kiss eventually became synonymous.
Q. Why is shifting responsibility to someone else called 'passing the buck'?
A. In card games, it was once customary to pass an item, called a buck, from player to player to indicate whose turn it was to deal. If a player did not wish to assume the responsibility of dealing, he would 'pass the buck' to the next player.
Q. Why do people clink their glasses before drinking a toast?
A. It used to be common for someone to try to kill an enemy by offering him a poisoned drink. To prove to a guest that a drink was safe, it became customary for a guest to pour a small amount of his drink into the glass of the host. Both men would drink it simultaneously. When a guest trusted his host, he would only touch or clink the host's glass with his own.
Q. Why are people in the public eye said to be 'in the limelight'?
A. Invented in 1825,limelight was used in lighthouses and theatres by burning a cylinder of lime which produced a brilliant light. In the theatre, a performer 'in the limelight' was the center of attention.
Q. Why is someone who is feeling great 'on cloud nine'?
A. Types of clouds are numbered according to the altitudes they attain, with nine being the highest cloud If someone is said to be on cloud nine, that person is floating well above worldly cares.
Q. In golf, where did the term 'Caddie' come from?
A. When Mary Queen of Scots went to France as a young girl, Louis, King of France, learned that she loved the Scots game 'golf.' So he had the first course outside of Scotland built for her enjoyment. To make sure she was properly chaperoned (and guarded) while she played, Louis hired cadets from a military school to accompany her.
Mary liked this a lot and when returned to Scotland (not a very good idea in the long run), she took the practice with her. In French, the word cadet is pronounced 'ca-day' and the Scots changed it into 'caddie.
Q. Why are many coin banks shaped like pigs?
A. Long ago, dishes and cookware in Europe were made of a dense orange clay called 'pygg'. When people saved coins in jars made of this clay, the jars became known as 'pygg banks.' When an English potter misunderstood the word, he made a container that resembled a pig. And it caught on.
Q. Did you ever wonder why dimes, quarters and half dollars have notches (milling), while pennies and nickels do not?
A. The US Mint began putting notches on the edges of coins containing gold and silver to discourage holders from shaving off small quantities of the precious metals. Dimes, quarters and half dollars are notched because they used to contain silver. Pennies and nickels aren't notched because the metals they contain are not valuable enough to shave.
Good morning everyboomie. wave
This may be my shortest week to date. In the same vein as the "Difficult English" segment though, I have to say that I'm not really planning to date the week for even though it is my type, I don't date anymore, and I certainly don't need to date the week because I feel that most of you know what date this is already. crazy Most of you. wink
That being said, I'll finish the thought, finally. grin
I work Saturday & Sunday and I'm off again Monday & Tuesday. woot WOOT to be sure!
Short and sweet.
Well, short anyway.
That's ok, I get enough sweet in my coffee. snicker
I like a little coffee in my cream and sugar. thumbsup
Speaking of coffee, I'd better get to bed.
Have a happy day everyone. rah
winter Good Morning Joe, Ana Haroula and Cailyn. Coffee is ready. We have over 3 feet of snow on our deck because of the drifting. Can't open any door because the snow is over half way up the doors. Only way out is the overhead garage doors. The snow is still coming down. Last night at 10PM the local weatherman said it was snowing at the rate of 4 inches per hour! I just hope we don't lose power! Hope it's a good day for all! winter
So thankful we still have power. Storm is incredible! Drifting snow is the worst. Can't get out any of our doors. Still storming!
Cailyn, Midgie, do you have power?
Stay safe and warm and help any animals who might need it at this time. I wish all of you well. A cousin near Buffalo, NY does her groceries on Sat AM so I sugested she wait at least a day and see how things are Sunday....."Oh no, I must do them Sat because that's how I've always done them". Well Ok but be careful. When I retired I threw out the clocks -no more scheduals.
Hey Nan, you were right about Schemer comming home when he got hungry. That's exactly what happened yesterday and you can bet I was relieved to see him. And the other one, Cmmndr Buttons hit home, ate and has disapeared. But it has been lovely kitty-cat weather. Today is cold -cold south wind which is kinda unusual. South wind is mostly warm.
Tomato plants are starting to blossom -can't wait.
Up early today and it's time for my early morning nap in order to rest up for my late morning nap. Let's not get into the luxurious afternoon nap. Aaaah retirement.
Happy Saturday
I had to get up early to wake Peter for a staff meeting and then went back to bed only to get awakened by a text message from Indiana sister, and then 20 minutes later from Chicago sister. lol Sleeping in was not in the cards today. Sis and BIL are coming over and the men are going to the driving range and Sis and I are going hiking with the dogs in the woods. She is bringing her camera and we are hoping to run across some coyotes and deer.
Haroula, happy Saturday to you!
No Sue??? I hope she did not lose power.
Gerry, so glad to see you kept your power on. I was most afraid you would lose it as you seem to when your area gets hit. I bet you skipped your walk this morning. lol
Gail, pictures please. grin I bet the kids can make a great snowman!
Connie, so when are we having a pool party? I'm ready!
Midgie, be careful out there today! So glad your power came back on.
SpaceQ, what are you doing this weekend? Are you feeling better?
soot, enjoy your day!
Yankee, I am relieved your new kitty came back. I would be so worried. I look forward top a time I do not need to follow any clock. yay
venus, how fun! It doesn't matter when you all can get together, just that you get together.
EDIT: I type too slow, Joe and Nan snuck in. grin
Joe, hope the customers are entertaining today.
Nan, I still have to replay and do one puzzle but I am taking a few hours off.
I hope you get your errands done before the storm hits. Be safe!
Ana wave
Super Saturday ya'll puppy
I'm reading about all you guys snowed in with doors that can't open. eek Question from one who has never lived in snow...do you crawl out the window to get to the door to dig it out?
Just heard one of the governors on the tv talking about the need to clear side vents?
Ya'll stay as safe as you can, and stay home. Midgy, sounds to me like you need to call in blizzarded in.
Boys are here and Per is "sick" which means he is well enough to do what he wants but too sick to do anything he doesn't. Son so doesn't see that and it makes me nuts!
Hubby and I were watching old Colombo's last night. So fun to see all the "latest and greatest" from 40 years ago.
Time for more coffee!
L4L, the garage door and sliding patio doors are the best way out and having a shovel "in" the house certainly helps so you can start digging a path. I remember shoveling the family room when we opened the patio door two February's ago because there were a couple feet of snow against it. lol
You need to pull out the "my house-my rules" with son. We need to do that quite often ourselves with the youngest.
Darlene, enjoy your chat. yay
Prayers and happy thoughts for no power outages for all of you in the East. Wow! I lived on Long Island for 10 years as a kid and remember blizzards. Still trying to get a response from my Aunt in Connecticut. She's probably without any power. Hope she's OK.
Off today to walk around the Bayfront where they demolished (imploded) our old power plant last Saturday. Taking my camera to get some good pictures. Should be fun. It's an awesome sight as you drive by on the Freeway and up close and personal should be even better.
WARNING! This person is extremely blonde...please type SLOWLY.
Lovely day with sis, we came across a coyote in the woods so it was exciting. She took some excellent snow pics. We went out to dinner to celebrate hubby's 27 pound weight loss. I promised him I would look the other way and let him have a meal of his choice. Now he is at the club working it off. rotfl
Are we having a fun weekend?
Oh Ana you are too funny. Congrats to your hubby.
This old body is exhausted from shoveling all day. Wow. I think we got close to 3 feet. Snow drifts and all. But shoveling my car out it seemed like we got a lot more. Anyway night all. I'm heading for my pillow.
Midgie sleep
