Yesterday came the next step post-divorce. Movers came to get 99% of my belongings out of what is now his house and move it all to storage. Everything went fairly smooth. I had packed 99% of non-furniture items, they arrived on time, worked swiftly and well together. We were on our way to the storage facility by 10:15 am. About an hour later, the transfer had been made from truck to storage unit with no problems. I signed more paperwork, we had a chat about using their service again next year to go from storage unit to a new place, we each got in our vehicles, prepared to each be on our separate ways - and that's when the smooth morning ended.

The exit gate didn't work so we were forced to go out the entry, same way we came in. I entered my security code, ran to my car, got in and headed out the door with the truck backing up behind me. The driver had to redirect the truck so was not ready before the security gate came down again. For the next few minutes, I keep entering the security code to keep the gate away from the truck as the driver worked to ease it thru the doorway, but it wasn't happening. After several attempts, while movers and truck went back into the facility to rethink the situation, I walked to the office only to find the 'back at noon' clock at the door. Called & left message which, by the way, over 24 hrs later has not been returned.

Finally, realizing there were no other vehicles around and had the whole parking area to work in, they decided to maneuver the truck to exit cab-first. When the whole truck was virtually straight in front of the door, my guesstimate is there was less than 2 ft on all sides of the truck. I punched in the security code one more time, and the truck easily moved on out. Thanks goodness'!

I had planned 2 more errands after the move but I was pooped!. You'd think I was the one driving the truck, HA!

Starting to really look forward to relaxing during the holidays. Gonna rent some movies, etc.

Yikes, what an experience! Most of those truck drivers are absolute magicians on maneuvering those big rigs.

Can we hire you for traffic control on our freeways? Sounds like you solved a very difficult situation! Hope the truck driver's listened to you and followed directions happily. Usually when I try to 'help' I get growling men who don't want to listen. Of course, eventually they figure out that I'm RIGHT. rotfl12

Time for you to relax. Hope you find someplace nice to call your own.

jAwwww Butterfly, doesn't sound like fun. But at least the truck didn't catch on fire and the movers literally toss all your belongings onto the side of the road to keep them from all being burned. rotfl12

Kudos and Cheers to you B'fly!!! Being on your own at first is overwhelmng but gets easier. Soon you solve situations yourself because you can't ask the other half for help. And that builds character and confidence. Heeee had to ask our children to help Hiiim. But I haven't. HaHaHa. Sometimes the stuff you endure befor a divorce is worse than after it.

Where there's a will there's a way. Glad you all were able to get that truck out. And someone needs a good talking to.

I'm not sure but I think there's a little bit of a misunderstanding. The movers are the ones who figured out and worked together on how to get the truck out. Me - I just watched and waited to see what they were going to do and acted accordingly. The one move suggested I didn't need to stay there; as long as I left my security code with him, they'd work it out. Told him I wasn't comfortable with that idea. Not a lack of trust in him, more of my own sense of responsibility, esp since I couldn't get in touch with anyone from the storage place. If their final plan to maneuver out hadn't worked, I'd have called the police.

But, yes, being away from someone who didn't appreciate nor trust my ideas has certainly begun to help me believe in myself more than I ever have. It's tiring at times, yet easier. I'm learning quickly that growing up ain't easy no matter what age you are.

Thanks so much for your words of wisdom and support.
