Robert,

Doing a search of old postings, all I saw are about the 2006 version.
Let's wait to see if anyone have tried the 2000 version.

I have no idea if it will play on Windows 7. The requirements are for WIndows 95/98. I do see that Big Fish Games has this game and it WILL play on Windows 7. I assume it's the same because the game description is the same for both of them.

It's actually Safecracker from 1997, not 2000.
It's a good game for puzzles, but it's best to play it on an old computer (from year 2000 or earlier) with Windows 98.

It has a problem with faster processors where the inventory list zips by too fast to select anything. There was a patch to correct the problem around the time XP came out, but computers kept getting faster and now even with the patch the inventory just zips by. You zip from the beginning of the inventory list to the end instead of scrolling.

Besides the problem with computer speed, there are things you must do prior to installing. For example, the game requires 3MB of memory, but if you have more than 1.5GB of memory, the game won't see any at all. So you have to reduce your virtual memory to an amount the game can see.

Inferno wrote up a "Setup Walkthrough" for installing Safecracker on XP, and some of what she wrote could be applied to newer versions of Windows.

However you still have the speed problem to work out. (Computers are a lot faster than when Inferno wrote the walkthrough.) It's just a lot easier to run the game on an older, slower computer -- preferably a computer from around year 2000 or earlier (so you don't need the patch) and on Windows 95 or 98 (so you don't have to configure or run in compatibility mode).

This one is harder to get working than most -- and mostly because it was so dependent on computer speed. DOS games that are much older are easier to run because DOSBox allows you to adjust for computer speed.

But unless someone does for current computers what the old Safecracker "patch" did for XP computers, and allows you to access the inventory, it's not really playable (unless you have a really old computer hanging around). The game uses a LOT of inventory (things you find in the safes and use on different safes).

hi Jenny. i stumbled across an old copy of Safecracker - year 2000 - in my basement, so out of curiosity, i loaded it up in my Win7 machine. lo and behold, it was loading until it said in a message a file LIBEAY32.DLL was missing. i could go no further. does that ring any bells with you? i remember Safecracker used to run on my XP. i still have the old document files which i tried to load to no avail4. robert.
