While waiting for the experts - have you tried
playing with the video options (if there is any). Looks like the laptop might not handle the game.
On the same vein - please check the specs to see if your laptop can handle it.

The system requirements for the game ** In this link ** don't list any of the Intel GMA video processors, which is what your Aspire laptop uses.

I don't own the game so I can't say if it's possible to run the game by tuning down the in-game graphics settings. Is there a specific error message, or do you just fall back to the desktop?

The error is a "catch all" access violation error and it's hard to say exactly where it's occurring the code. But it's most likely related to the integrated graphics processor, and a lack of discrete video memory. Your IGP is using "shared" system memory.

Are there any in-game graphics settings?

Check the Configure option, which seems to have other options under it.
Turn off or turn down any extras you find there, like antialiasing, anisotropic filtering, shadows, glow, water movement, etc. Reduce resolution.

Turn off Full Screen so the game plays in a window.

Vertical synchronization is to prevent what's called "screen tearing," which you can read about here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screen_tearing
Since your graphics may not be up to it, turn off vertical synchronization.

Once you've turned off or turned down all the graphics enhancements you can, see if the game will play. It may not, but you'll have done all you can.
