I tried to install this game and the audio works fine but the video is terrible. I can see the house but it has different colors on it and I can't get it to start. I have the compatability on 95. Is there something special that should be done?

Unless you have the GOG or DotEMU versions, use ScummVM to play it.

If you're running the GOG version there is no need to set the compatibility mode. Which game are you playing? Is it the original?

It sounds to me like Tsavorite is trying to play the version of 7th Guest which was designed to run on Windows 95 - this version came out some time after the original DOS release. I recently sold this version on eBay and that is why I am familiar with it.

I have one of those Win95 versions, Marian. But I wasn't clear on whether Tsavorite was talking about the Win95 version of 7th Guest or trying to run an older version using Win95 compatibility. ScummVM is supposed to work with either version -- even the old pre-OSX Mac version.

It might be worthwhile buying the GOG version when they're having one of their 50% off or 75% off sales. No configuration necessary and you don't need a disc in the drive.

I believe they also provided a patch to convert the original DOS version to use DirectX (Windows 95). I don't recall if it ran patched under DOSBox (or ScummVM) though.

The Scumm site says both DOS and Windows versions are supported,
but doesn't say anything about a patched DOS version
http://scummvm.org/compatibility/DEV/t7g/

Just for a glimpse into the past, you can find the old Trilobyte download page for the 7th Guest and 11th Hour DirectX patches on the ***Web Archive***

The patches were small enough that the web archive archived them along with the download webpage.

Note that I am ***NOT*** recommending anyone use these old patches unless they want to play the original DOS versions on Windows 95/98, either on an old Win95/98 computer or inside a Virtual Machine. I doubt the patch converts the original 16-bit code to 32-bit, since it was not necessary for Windows 95/98 -- and 16-bit code won't work on 64-bit Windows.

I remember that patch; it worked for me when I used it.

I found a link for that patch: 7th Guest DirectX patch

There's nothing to understand.
If you buy the updated version at GOG, it automatically installs the game so it will work in Windows 7.

Yep, GOG makes game playing very simple. Trying to run the Widows 95 version without older DirectX support is probably why the game has graphical problems. Microsoft began dropping backwards compatibility around the time they released DirectX 8.
