Hey, gang--

Is it necessary to shut down
your computer before a hard
freeze or winter blast?

What's the risk, if any?

Do you expect to lose power?
Is your computer connected to a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)?

A UPS is essentially a large rechargeable battery that supplies power to your computer if your power goes out and gives you a few minutes time to shut down the computer properly.

If your computer has no UPS, and you suddenly lose power, it could corrupt your operating system.

What is the power cord plugged into?
Here are pictures of different model of UPS.

If your computer is plugged into a power strip or into the wall, it's not on a UPS.

With all the cold and strong wind we've been having I've been worried about being on my computer. Saturday morning we did lose power for a nanosecond and knocked my computer out but it seems to be fine.

But, Sunday we received an automated phone message from our electric company (Com Ed) informing us that power would be cut in our area that day between 7 and 8 pm for about an hour. They actually cut it off around 6:30 but being the nervous person I am I had already turned the computer off as well as my tv. I was absolutely amazed that they called to inform us of this. That was a first!
