I am so angry I just had to vent. My hard drive died and I had to get another. Upon reinstalling/downloading my programs I installed Skyrim from my DVD, but since I had DLC's from Steam It had to download them. My basic program installed from the DVD in minutes, but then came Steam. It stated downloading the DLC's at around 9 Pm last night. When I woke up and checked the download was at about 35%. It is now 5 PM which means that the download has been ongoing for around 20 hours and it is just now at 92%.
Now I have read all the supposed fixes and tried them all. I changed download sites and put no limit on the limit bandwith and could find no other suggestions. I checked my internet speed with a couple of sites and my kbps is 573 and my mbps is 82. I have DLS from Century Link and this is the fastest that is available in my area.
If I were having a problem from all my sites then I would say yes it's my connection but that's not the case. GOG downloads for the same amount of GB's is 2 or 3 hours. The same with viva media and several other sites. In fact the only turtle download site I have is Steam.
So, I've vented and my last remaining 8% should be finished in another hour or two.
You laugh because I'm different I laugh because you're all the same
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.

One might say you're 'steaming', oldman. I don't blame you.

I am in your club, oldman. I am limited to wireless broadband where I live in the country and a 3 GB download takes me at least 24 hours. My speed is similar to yours, but my ISP throttles my speed to a crawl after 65 MB of a download. Who knows... maybe their servers are just overloaded right now.
Once again, weeds are my life!

To really check your internet speed you really need to ping your server to get an accurate measurement. What you're paying for is the speed from your home to the server, and no further. So using a measurement site isn't giving you a true measurement. If any path from your server to the site you're after is experiencing problems, bad connections, cuts, bad equipment, etc., your speed is going to drastically drop. And if the CRC for what's received doesn't match what's sent, it will be resent. And it will be resent until it checks or times out.
Something else should also be taken into consideration, the site's servers. That site might have the latest and greatest which blaze when downloading. Or it might have those first generation ones which still send one bit at a time. The point being, servers also play an important part in the speed you achieve when visiting a site.
If speed is important then I would first have a talk with my provider, and have them make sure you have the correct speed. If that passed, then I'd contact the site that's slow and explain the problem, what you've done at your end, and how long it took to download this or that product. If people don't let them know there's a problem, or a perceived problem, it may never get resolved if indeed there is an actual problem with their equipment.
Our video card went south and when the new one arrived we received a coupon for a free game from Steam. I'd never downloaded from Steam so the manger had to first be installed. I did notice this particular download was slower than most, but I wan't in a hurry and didn't worry about the time. And, the game will be released April 29, shucks.

To really check your internet speed you really need to ping your server to get an accurate measurement.
Ping checks the latency of your connection not your speed. You can have very fast ping speed on very slow connections and slow ping on very fast connections. All it does is measure the round trip times for a packet of information from you to a destination and back. Obviously if you are getting lots of packet drops then download speeds are likely to be affected. Speedtest sites usually choose which server the will run the test from by testing for the fastest ping speed anyway.

Yeah, mj, ping does that, you're right. I was using the word as a general reference to testing between a persons' computer and their ISP. And I shouldn't have. Still, Pining your providers' sever will help eliminate any problems which may exist on that leg of the internet connection. And a speed test run between a persons' computer and their ISP will again eliminate any problems which may exist. Once it has been confirmed a person is receiving what they're paying for from their computer to their ISP, it's about all they can do to fix any problems. Because any other problems have to be dealt with from the ISPs' end.
